Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the changes in tooth mobility following orthodontic treatment and to obtain information regarding the guideline of retainer wear duration during the post-treatment period. Methods: The sample consisted of twenty patients who had been treated with edgewise appliances. The mobility of the maxillary teeth from the central incisor to the first molar was measured bilaterally by way of the $Periotest^{(R)}$, a non-invasive, electronic device that provides an objective measurement of the reaction of the periodontium to a defined impact load. Tooth mobility was monitored at the time of the removal of the orthodontic appliances and subsequently at three-month intervals during the two years following appliance removal. Results: Tooth mobility decreased rapidly for the first six months and then decreased at a slower rate during the next six months; no statistically significant decrease in mobility was observed during the second year following appliance removal. Conclusions: The results of the present study suggest that adequate tooth stabilization is critical during the first six months following appliance removal and that continued wearing of retainers is recommended at least until twelve months after the completion of orthodontic treatment.
The structural designs of RC flat plates that have insufficient flexural stiffness due to lack of support from boundary beams may be governed by serviceability as well as a strength criteira. Specially, since over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of a flat plate system under construction, a construction sequence and its impact on the slab deflections may be decisive factors in designs of flat plate systems. In this study, the procedure of calculating slab deflections considering construction sequences and concrete cracking effects is proposed. The construction steps and the construction loads are defined by the simplified method, and then the slab moments, elastic deflections, and the effective moment of inertia are calculated in each construction step. The elastic deflections in column and middle strips are magnified to inelastic deflections by the effective moment of inertia, and the center deflection of slab are calculated by the crossing beam method. The proposed method is verified by comparisons with the existing test result and the nonlinear analysis result. Also, by applications of the proposed method, the effects of the slab construction cycle and the number of shored floors on the deflections of flat plates under construction are analyzed.
In this paper we have attempted to bring the wavelet transform theory to the dynamic response conversion algorithm. This algorithm is proposed for the problem of estimating the displacement data by defining the transformed responses. In this algerian, the displacement response can be obtained from the measured acceleration records by integration without requiring the knowledge of the initial velocity and displacement information. The advantage of the wavelet transform over either a pure spectral or temporal decomposition of the signal is that the pertinent signals features can be characterized in the time-frequency plane. In the response conversion procedure using the wavelet decomposition signals, not only the static component can be extracted, but also the dynamic displacement component can be separated by the structural mode from the identified displacement response. The applicability of the technique is tested by an example problem using the real bridge's superstructure under several cases of moving load. If the reliability of the identified responses is ensured, it is expected that the proposed method for estimating the impact factor can be useful in the bridge's dynamic test. This method can be useful in those practical cases when the direct measurement of the displacement is difficult as in the dynamic studies of huge structure.

Recent research has shown that elementary school students can experience epistemic affect -emotions and feelings experienced within epistemic practices, such as the enjoyment of having a wonderful idea or uncomfortable feeling of at a cognitive dissonance- during modeling process. This study explores how an introverted elementary student could participate in the modeling process by constructing an epistemic affect. Based on the theory of constructed emotion, we analyzed one elementary student's constructed epistemic affect using data resources such as emotion diaries, video recordings, and post interviews. We selected one introverted student (a fifth grader), showing peripheral and full participation during modeling. Specifically, we explored which emotions were constructed when she participated in modeling peripherally -and which epistemic affect was constructed when she participated fully- during the construction, evaluation, and revision processes. The research results showed, first, that the introverted elementary student came to participate in the model construction process by constructing the epistemic affect called aha. Second, the results showed that she came to participate in the model revision process by constructing the epistemic affect called feeling that the reasoning was wrong when confronting the rebuttals of the other student. Finally, she came to participate in the model evaluation process by constructing the epistemic affect called dislike of another student's idea. Through our exploration of the constructed epistemic affect of the introverted elementary student, we deduced that it is important to help each student to construct an epistemic affect that facilitates his or her participation in modeling. Also, we discussed that it is important to understand the impact of the emotional load that can occur for each student, depending on the constructed past, present, and future emotions.

In the wake of increased concerns on reduction of greenhouse emission which started with United Nation's Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Kyoto protocol, Korean government is making various efforts under the represented slogan "Low Carbon, Green Growth". Therefore, it is inevitable that construction industry also follow the Korea government's slogan and the international trend in environmental problems. This study identified several main construction materials and equipments of civil construction projects and suggested a environmental cost estimation method and related estimation standards (Public and private owners are distinguished). A case analysis of a real road construction project is also performed and characteristics according to the owner type is compared. This study analyzed the environmental impact to total construction cost variations. In the result, public owner required 11~16% of extra budget and private owner required 19~22% of extra costs. This study is limited in consideration of environmental factors and carbon trading prices.
As performance-based design (PBD) has a direct impact on evacuation safety assessments, designing fire scenarios based on real fire tests is essential. To improve the reliability of the PBD for fire safety in multiplexes, information on fire behavior, such as heat release rate (HRR) and fire spread rate, are provided in this study by conducting a standard fabric flammability test. To this end, several chairs were arranged in a pattern that resembled a theater-style seating. The peak HRR and heating value per unit mass for each chair ranged from 415 kW to 988 kW and 15.2 MJ/kg to 23.8 MJ/kg, respectively. The heating values per unit mass of the new and old chairs were 23.6 MJ/kg and 16.7 MJ/kg, respectively. As the quantity of plastic and cushioning materials in the new chairs was more than that of the old ones, the new chairs were more vulnerable to fire hazards. Furthermore, when the chairs were arranged in a line, the fire spread rate was observed to be 0.39-0.42 m/min, regardless of the ignition location. Finally, a fire growth curve showing the peak HRR and fire spread rate was also demonstrated.

Recently, interest for environmental pollution in various fields is on the increase, and the researches on the life cycle assessment of environmental performance assessment method for calculating the environmental loads are currently most performed. It is expected to have a significant influence on the environment, since SOC infrastructures are go through a variety of materials, manufacturing process, however it is judged that researches and measures for environmental pollution is insufficient. In this study, we build the data for 204 of steel bridge designed after 2000 year, and the 100 of bridge which were selected to from obtained results were calculated the environmental loads at the planning stage based on the life cycle assessment. In addition, standard classification systems in work type for steel bridges were established. Based on this, the basic design data and input materials for the bridges are applied to the LCI DB, and the environmental load for required material is evaluated and is shown as Eco-point. Environmental loads obtained from this study, it is judged that can be utilized as a basic data for the process of the life cycle assessment in future steel bridge design.

In this study, the effect of cryogenic liquefied natural gas leakage and loading on liquefied natural gas cargo hold is investigated to observe the performance of the polymer foam material that comprises the cryogenic insulation of the cargo hold. The primary barriers of liquefied natural gas carrier that are in contact with the liquefied natural gas will leak if damage is accumulated, owing to fluid impact loads or liquefied natural gas loading / unloading over a long period. The leakage of the cryogenic fluid affects the interior of the polymer foam, which is a porous closed cell structure, and causes a change in behavior with respect to the working load. In this study, mechanical properties of polyisocyanurate foam specimen, which is a polymer material used as insulation, are evaluated. The performance of the specimens, owing to the cold brittleness and the impregnation effects of the cryogenic fluids, are quantitatively compared and analyzed.
The problem of wheel tread defects has become a major challenge for the health management of high-speed rail as a wheel defect with small radius deviation may suffice to give rise to severe damage on both the train bogie components and the track structure when a train runs at high speeds. It is thus highly desirable to detect the defects soon after their occurrences and then conduct wheel turning for the defective wheelsets. Online wheel condition monitoring using wheel impact load detector (WILD) can be an effective solution, since it can assess the wheel condition and detect potential defects during train passage. This study aims to develop an FBG-based track-side wheel condition monitoring method for the detection of wheel tread defects. The track-side sensing system uses two FBG strain gauge arrays mounted on the rail foot, measuring the dynamic strains of the paired rails excited by passing wheelsets. Each FBG array has a length of about 3 m, slightly longer than the wheel circumference to ensure a full coverage for the detection of any potential defect on the tread. A defect detection algorithm is developed for using the online-monitored rail responses to identify the potential wheel tread defects. This algorithm consists of three steps: 1) strain data pre-processing by using a data smoothing technique to remove the trends; 2) diagnosis of novel responses by outlier analysis for the normalized data; and 3) local defect identification by a refined analysis on the novel responses extracted in Step 2. To verify the proposed method, a field test was conducted using a test train incorporating defective wheels. The train ran at different speeds on an instrumented track with the purpose of wheel condition monitoring. By using the proposed method to process the monitoring data, all the defects were identified and the results agreed well with those from the static inspection of the wheelsets in the depot. A comparison is also drawn for the detection accuracy under different running speeds of the test train, and the results show that the proposed method can achieve a satisfactory accuracy in wheel defect detection when the train runs at a speed higher than 30 kph. Some minor defects with a depth of 0.05 mm~0.06 mm are also successfully detected.
The wet oxidation of phenol has been investigated at temperatures from 150 to $250^{\circ}C$ and oxygen partial pressures from 25.8 to 75.0 bar with initial pH of 1.0 to 12.0 and initial phenol concentration of 10 g/l. Chemical Oxygen Demand COD has bee measured to estimate the oxidation rate. Reaction intermediates have been identified and their concentration profiles have been determined using liquid chromatography. The destruction rate of phenol have shown the first-order kinetics with respect to phenol and the changes in COD during wet oxidation have been described well with the lumped model. The impact of various homogeneous catalysts, such as $Cu^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$ and $Ce^{3+}$ ions, on the destruction rate of phenol and COD has also been studied. The homogeneous catalyst of $CuSO_4$ has been found to be the most effective for the destruction of phenol and COD during wet oxidations. The destruction rate of formic acid formed during wet oxidations of phenol have increased as increasing temperature and $CuSO_4$ concentration. The final concentrations of acetic acid which has been formed during wet oxidations and difficult to oxidize have increased with reaction temperature and with decrease in the catalyst load.
