  • Gas turbine systems are applied extensively in energy supplies to cover peak load requirements. The gas turboset must be accelerated by starting device up to 60%~80% of rated speed to ignite the gas turbine. Recently, the most favorable and economical starting device is the LCI(Load Commutated Inverter). The LCI runs up the gas turboset by feeding the generator as a synchronous motor. In this paper, we discuss in detail the driving principles and features of 183MW gas turbine system. During field application of LCI system, many tests have been conducted and the results were described in this paper. The test results will be considered as the important resources for development in future.

  • A new current source inverter (CSl) with dc-side commutation and load-side energy recovery circuit is proposed with analysis and explanation of the circuit operation. Proposed inverter overcomes the most drawbacks of the conventional CSI's - high device voltage stress, low operating frequency range, large commutation capacitance, etc. - by employing simultaneous recovery and commutation concept. The new CSI employs only one commutation capacitor and it can be built with considerably low cost. The commutation energies are temporarily stored into a large dc capacitor and recovered to the load side, thus the device voltage stress is low and the efficiency is high in the proposed inverter. Computer simulation results are given at the steady state, and a guideline determining the commutation circuit is given.

  • The utilization of buildings can be improved by extending them vertically. However, the added load of the extension might require building foundations to be underpinned; otherwise, the loads on the foundations might exceed their bearing capacity. In this study, a preloading method was presented aiming at transferring partial loads from existing piles to underpinning piles. A pneumatic-type model preloading device was developed and used to carry out centrifuge experiments to evaluate the load-displacement behavior of piles, the pile-soil interaction during preloading, and the additional loading caused by vertical extension. The results showed that the preloading devices effectively transfer load from existing piles to underpinning piles. In the additional loading test of group piles, the load-sharing ratio of a pile increased with its stiffness. The load-sharing ratio of a preloaded micropile was less than that of a non-preloaded micropile as a result of the reduction in axial stiffness caused by preloading before additional loading. Therefore, a slight reduction of the load-sharing capacity of an underpinning pile should be considered if the preloading method is applied. Further, two full scale preloading devices was developed. The devices preload underpinning piles and thereby produce reaction forces on a reaction frame to jack existing piles upward, thus transferring load from the existing piles to the underpinning piles. Specifically, screw-type and hydraulic-jack type devices were developed for the practical application of foundation underpinning during vertical extension, and their operability and load transfer effect verified via full-scale structural experiments.

  • When mounting the sensor device in the way of Plug&Play, sensor device drivers need to be loaded and linked dynamically. Since a sensor node platform is based on small 8 bit MCU, dynamic loading and linking technique used in Windows and Linux can not be applied. In this paper, we present how to link and load dynamically sensor device drivers for sensor device Plug&Play. We implement a prototype and evaluate it to make sure that there is no performance degradation like sensor device driver connection speed and memory usage. Connection speed overhead increases to 0.2ms. Memory usage overhead increases to hundreds byte. It shows that there is no heavy influence in running the actual program.

  • Recently, power supply-demand instability due to the dramatic increase in power usage suchas air-conditioning load at summertime has brought forecasts of decrease in power supply capability. Therefore improving the load factor through systematic load management, in other words, Direct Load Control became necessary. Direct Load Control(DLC) system is kind of a load management program for stabilization of electric power supply-demand. It's purpose is limiting the demand of the demand side selected at peak load or other time periods. The paper presented a Design of Direct Load Controller for control the amount of power demand in demand side. The proposed Controller is cheaper and has ability of storing more power data than pre-existing device.

  • The purpose of this research is to comprehend experimentally the nature of human static load to wall for making use of the result as basic data to evaluate resisting force of lightweight wall. Human motions exerting static load are classified to 4 types, and two-hands pushing and shoulder pushing are defined as the instantaneously forcing motions with hands or shoulder put on the load plate, respectively. Back leaning and one-hand leaning are defined as motions of taking a rest in their respective comfortable posture. Measurement of static horizontal load caused by each motion showed that the highest load ratio depends on hardness of load plane and was 1.17~1.25 times of weight in two-hands pushing, 0.95~0.99 times in shoulder pushing, 0.16~0.18 times in back leaning, and 0.12~0.15 times in one-hand leaning.

  • An experimental study was peformed to investigate characteristics of an inverter driven heat pump system with a variation of compressor frequency and expansion device. The compressor frequency varied from 30Hz to 75Hz, and the performance of the system ap-plying three different expansion devices such as capillary tube, thermostatic expansion valve(TXV), and electronic expansion valve (EEV) was measured. The load conditions were altered by varying the temperatures of the secondary fluid entering condenser and evaporator with a constant flow rate. When the test condition was deviated from the standard value(rated value), TXV and EEV showed better performance than capillary tube due to optimal control of mass flow rate and superheat. In the present study, it was observed that the variable area expansion device had better performance than constant area expansion device in the inverter heat pump system due to active control of flow area with a change of com-pressor frequency and load conditions.

  • A smart dust monitoring system is useful for obtaining information on rough terrain that is difficult for humans to access. One of ways to deploy sensors to gather information in smart dust environment is to use an aircraft in the Amazon rainforest to scatter an enormous amount of small and cheap sensors (or smart dust devices), or to use an unmanned spacecraft to throw the sensors on the moon's surface. However, scattering an enormous amount of smart dust devices creates the difficulty of managing such devices as they can be scattered into inaccessible areas, and also causes problems such as bottlenecks, device failure, and high/low density of devices. Of the various problems that may occur in the smart dust environment, this paper is focused on solving the bottleneck problem. To address this, we propose and construct a three-layered hierarchical smart dust monitoring system that includes relay dust devices (RDDs). An RDD is a smart dust device with relatively higher computing/communicating power than a normal smart dust device. RDDs play a crucial role in reducing traffic load for the system. To validate the proposed system, we use climate data obtained from authorized portals to compare the system with other systems (i.e., non-hierarchical system and simple hierarchical system). Through this comparison, we determined that the transmission processing time is reduced by 49%-50% compared to other systems, and the maximum number of connectable devices can be increased by 16-32 times without compromising the system's operations.
