  • Screw loosening and subsequent pullout can be attributed to the reduction in bone mineral density in the vertebrae manifested by osteoporosis in which the decrease in fixation strength between the cancellous bone and screw threads are accelerated by repeated loads exerted by patients own weight and activities following the surgery. In this study, the change in pullout strength of the pedicle screws was investigated before and after repeated loads were imparted. For this purpose. Diapason pedicle screws $(6.7\times40mm)$ were inserted onto fresh porcine spine specimens (T1-L5) after bone mineral density was measured using a DEXA. With an MTS, an axial load was applied at a loading rate of 0.33mm/sec until failure to measure the maximum pullout strength. Flexion moment of 7.5N-m was then imparted at 0.5Hz for 2000 cycles. It was found that the maximum pullout strength was exponentially related to BMD regardless of load types ($107.71\;\times\;\exp^{(1.43{\times}BMD)}r^2=0.93$, P<0.0001 without repeated load; ($107.71\;\times\;\exp^{(2.19{\times}BMD)}r^2=0.78$, P<0.0001 with repeated load). The results suggest that the reduction in pullout strength for pedicle screws is far more prominent in osteoporotic spine than in normal spine especially as number of repeated load was increased. More importantly, it was demonstrated that the level of bone mineral density and the activity level of the patient should be evaluated in more detail for successful implementation of pedicle screw systems in spinal surgery.

  • Resonant converters are well suited for induction heating (IH) applications due to their advantages such as efficiency and power density. The control systems of these appliances should provide smooth and wide power control with fewer losses. In this paper, a simple phase locked loop (PLL) based variable duty cycle (VDC) pulse density modulation (PDM) power control scheme for use in class-D inverters for IH loads is proposed. This VDC PDM control method provides a wide power control range. This control scheme also achieves stable and efficient Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) operation over a wide load range. Analysis and modeling of an IH load is done to perform a time domain simulation. The design and output power analysis of a class-D inverter are done for both the conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) and the proposed PLL based VDC PDM methods. The control principles of the proposed method are described in detail. The validity of the proposed control scheme is verified through MATLAB simulations. The PLL loop maintains operation closer to the resonant frequency irrespective of variations in the load parameters. The proposed control scheme provides a linear output power variation to simplify the control logic. A prototype of the class-D inverter system is implemented to validate the simulation results.

  • This study examined the adequacy of a school classroom's occupant load density standard to cope with the issues associated with the decreasing number of students and regional variations. Therefore, this study analyzed the occupant load density standards of kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, and universities using the data open to the public by the Ministry of Education. The results revealed a high variance in the occupant load density according to the school type. The median values were 1.49, 3.45, 2.64, 2.45, and $3.41m^2/person$ for kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, and universities, respectively. Although the occupant load density was higher than the current standard ($1.9m^2/person$), except for kindergarten, the present standard did not need to be improved immediately, considering the purpose of calculating the maximum occupancy. On the other hand, if improvements are made in line with other enhancements of a national education policy, it will be possible to mitigate the measure to $2.5m^2/person$ based on the survey results.

  • Sandwich structure is widely used in various fields of industry due to its excellent strength and stiffness compared with weight. We studied the buckling and bending behavior with respect to the variation of design parameters such as length, height, and thickness of honeycomb sandwich core. We found that as the density and the thickness of core become higher, the value of critical bucking load increased significantly. We found that the effect of bending stress due to critical buckling load resulted in high bending stress and the value of bending stress decreased in half according to the increase of length of core. The effect by bending stress is dominant above the portion of the intersection line between bending stress and the effect of buckling is dominant below the potion of it. We could get proper thickness ratio and density of core according to applied load conditions.

  • The cooling of data centers has emerged as a significant challenge as the density of IT equipment increased. With the rapid increasing of heat load and cooling system, predictions for electronics power trends have been closely watched. A data center power density projection is needed so that IT organizations can develop data centers with adequate cooling for reasonable lifetimes. This paper will discuss the need for something more than processor and equipment power trend projections which have overestimated the required infrastructure for customers. This projection will use data from a survey of actual enterprise data centers and the ASHRAE projections to formulate a data center server heat load trend projection.

  • This paper presents a method to calculate a sag cumulative table and density table based on the area of vulnerability to voltage sags. The expected sag performance at sensitive load points can be easily assessed through the calculation of the sag cumulative table and density table. However, the calculation of the tables regarding large power systems is very difficult task. Therefore, an efficient method for calculating the tables is needed. In this paper, the improved method to determine the areas of vulnerability is addressed and the method to calculate the tables based on the area of vulnerability is also described. The proposed scheme can be efficiently used to assess the voltage sag performance at sensitive load points in large power systems.

  • In this work, effects of hyper-elastic rubber material properties on the indentation load-deflection curve and subindenter deformation are first examined via [mite element (FE) analyses. An optimal data acquisition spot is selected, which features maximum strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then contrive two normalized functions. which map an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve. From the strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, we can extract the rubber material properties. This new spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties in a manner more effective than the common uniaxial tensile/compression tests. The indentation approach successfully measures the rubber material properties and the corresponding nominal stress.strain curve with an average error less than 3%.

  • Pile foundations used as offshore support structures are dominantly subjected to cyclic lateral loads due to wind and waves. In this study, a series of cyclic lateral load tests were performed on a pre-installed aluminum flexible pile in sandy soil with three different relative densities (40%, 70% and 90%) in order to evaluate the effect of cyclic lateral loads on lateral load capacity of a pile. The cyclic lateral loads increased the lateral load capacity of a pile at 40% relative density, whereas they decreased it at 70% and 90% relative densities. This can be explained by the fact that the cyclic lateral loads slightly densified the surrounding soil in relatively loose sand (40%), while the surrounding soil was disturbed in relatively dense sand (70% and 90%). These effects were more obvious as the cyclic lateral load amplitude increased, being independent with the saturation. Also, from the test results, an empirical equation for the lateral load capacity of a cyclic laterally loaded pile in sandy soil was developed in terms of relative density of the soil and the cyclic lateral load amplitude.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate a criteria of intercepting capacity and a reduction goal of overflow pollution load in combined sewer system. In the current criteria of intercepting capacity in the domestic sewage facility standard, it is known that three times of peak sewage (Q) in dry period or runoff flow by 2mm/hr is not appropriate since the intercepted flow is estimated by runoff and show different result even in the same watershed. Though a reduction goal of overflow pollution load can be determined from 1) same level of storm-water runoff pollution load in separated storm sewer, 2) less than 5% sewage load in dry weather period, by the domestic sewage facility standard, the simulated results from storm-water model show large differences between two criteria. While it is predicted that sewage pollution load standard three time larger than separated storm sewer standard in high population density and urbanized area, it is shown that separate storm sewer standard larger than sewage pollution load standard in middle population density and developing area. Accordingly, it is proposed that more reasonable intercepting flow and reduction goal of overflows pollution load should be established to minimize discharging pollution load in combined sewer systems. For the purpose, a resonable standard has to be amended by pollution load balance considering the characteristics of a watershed for generation, collection, treatment, and discharging flow.
