In this study, an applicability by using the FEM was investigated for the prediction of both the depth of improvement and the vibration effect when dynamic compaction method is applied. The region was modelled by the field conditions applying dynamic compaction method and the rigid body force was applied to the dynamic load model. Predicted depth of improvement calculated by the vertical peak particle acceleration was compared and analyzed with an existing empirical equation, and the effect of groundwave by deducing the peak particle velocity from vibration sources was compared and analyzed with the results of another existing empirical equation. The results showed that the prediction of the depth of improvement has similar tendency to practice, and the vibration effect has some differences in a particular section from existing equation, but it could predict the safety distance to some degree. The analyzed results are expected to be basic data for the development of reliability of dynamic compaction design with existing empirical method.

In this paper, a micro-mechanical failure prediction program is developed based on SIFT (Strain Invariant Failure Theory) by using the multi-scale modeling method for fiber-reinforced composite materials. And the failure analysis are performed for open-hole composite laminate specimen in order to verify the developed program. First of all, the critical strain invariants are obtained through the tensile tests for three types of specimens. Also, the matrices of strain amplification factors are determined through the finite element analysis for micro-mechanical model, RVE (Representative Volume Element). Finally, the microscopic failure analysis is performed for the open-hole composite laminate specimen model by applying a failure load obtained from tensile test, and the predicted failure indices are evaluated for verification of the developed program.
Traditionally used analytical approach to predict the fatigue failure of reinforced concrete (RC) structure is generally conservative and has certain limitations. The nonlinear finite element method (FEM) offers less expensive solution for fatigue analysis with sufficient accuracy. However, the conventional implicit dynamic analysis is very expensive for high level computation. Whereas, an explicit dynamic analysis approach offers a computationally operative modelling to predict true responses of a structural element under periodic loading and might be perfectly matched to accomplish long life fatigue computations. Hence, this study simulates the fatigue behaviour of RC beams with finite element (FE) assemblage presenting a simplified explicit dynamic numerical solution to show computer aided fatigue behaviour of RC beam. A commercial FEM package, ABAQUS has been chosen for this complex modelling. The concrete has been modelled as a 8-node solid element providing competent compression hardening and tension stiffening. The steel reinforcements are simulated as two-node truss elements comprising elasto-plastic stress-strain behaviour. All the possible nonlinearities are duly incorporated. Time domain analysis has been adopted through an automatic Newmark-β time incremental technique. The program consists of twelve RC beams to visualize the real behaviour during fatigue process and to obtain the reliability of the study. Both the numerical and experimental results indicate a redistribution of stresses along the time and damage accumulation of beam which severely affect the serviceability and ultimate capacity of RC beam. The output of the FEM analysis demonstrates good match with the experimental consequences which affirm the efficacy of the computer aided model. The controlled fatigue damage evolution at service fatigue load limits makes the FE model an efficient tool in predicting high cycle fatigue behaviour of RC structures.
It is critical to study on data charateristics analysis and prediction for the flood disaster prevention and water quality monitoring because discharge and TOC data in a river channel are strongly nonlinear. Therefore, in the present study, prediction models for discharge, TOC, and TOC load data were developed using approximation component in the last level and detail components segregated by wavelet transform. The results show that the developed model overcame the persistence phenomenon which could be seen from previous models and improved the prediciton accuracy comparing with the previous models. It might be expected that the results from the present study can mitigate flood disaster damage and construct active alternatives to various water quality problems in the future.

An important operational goal of a container terminal is to maximize the efficiency of the operation of quay cranes (QCs) that load and/or unload containers onto and from vessels. While the maximization of the efficiency of the QC operation requires minimizing the delay of yard tractors (YT) that transport containers between the storage yard and QCs, the delay is often inevitable because of traffic congestion. In this paper, we propose a method for learning a model that predicts traffic speed in a terminal using only YT operation data, even though the YT traffic is mixed with that of external trucks. Without any information on external truck traffic, we could still make a reasonable traffic forecast because the YT operation data contains information on the YT routes in the near future. The results of simulation experiments showed that the model learned by the proposed method could predict traffic speed with significant accuracy.

Nowadays, various water quality prediction models have been studied, then these models can support the method which evaluate the effect of various alternative water quality management by simulation without experimentation. But, It is necessary to create complex input data file for applying these water quality model and even though the appropriate result is extracted, it is impossible to use as decision making data effectively because of the limitation of expression of model itself. As this study is about the stream water quality modeling, for overcoming the model's above limitation, by developing an interface which can calculate the pollutant load of watershed, I could create a input data file and visualize the simulation result so that I was going to integrate water quality model and GSIS using Flexible coupling applied to GSIS in the pre-process and post-process on model. The QUAL2E model, used in this study, is verified by stream water quality model in previous various results of study and has many examples through previous study, because that is appropriate to water quality model, especially in Korea, and comparatively accurate and their usage is quite simple.

When a control algorithm is developed to protect automotive compressor surges, the simulation model typically selects an empirically determined look-up table. However, it is difficult for a control oriented empirical model to show surge characteristics of the super charger. In this study, a dynamic supercharger model is developed to predict the performance of a centrifugal compressor under dynamic load follow-up. The model is developed using Simulink$^{(R)}$ environment, and is composed of a compressor, throttle body, valves, and chamber. Greitzer's compressor model is used, and the geometric parameters are achieved by the actual supercharger. The simulation model is validated with experimental data. It is shown that compressor surge is effectively predicted by this dynamic compressor model under various operating conditions.

The objective of this research was to develop a VEPCD (ViscoElastoPlastic Continuum Damage) Model which is used to predict the behavior of asphalt concrete under various loading and temperature conditions. This paper presents the VEPCD model formulated in a tension mode and its validation using four hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures: dense-graded HMA, SBS, CR-TB, and Terpolymer. Modelling approaches consist of two components: the ViscoElastic Continuum Damage (VECD) mechanics and the ViscoPlastic (VP) theory. The VECD model was to describe the time-dependent behavior of HMA with growing damage. The irrecoverable (whether time-dependent or independent) strain has been described by the VP model. Based on the strain decomposition principle, these two models are integrated to form the VEPCD model. For validating the VEPCD model, two types of laboratory tests were performed: 1) a constant crosshead strain rate tension test, 2) a fatigue test with randomly selected load levels and frequencies.
While extensive efforts have been made in the past to develop finite element models (FEMs) for concrete-filled steel tubular columns (CFSTCs), these models may not be suitable to be used in some cases, especially in view of the utilisation of high strength steel and high strength concrete. A method is presented herein to predict the complete stress-strain curve of concrete subjected to tri-axial compressive stresses caused by axial load coupled with lateral pressure due to the confinement action in square and rectangular CFSTCs with normal and high strength materials. To evaluate the lateral pressure exerted on the concrete in square and rectangular shaped columns, an accurately developed FEM which incorporates the effects of initial local imperfections and residual stresses using the commercial program ABAQUS is adopted. Subsequently, an extensive parametric study is conducted herein to propose an empirical equation for the maximum average lateral pressure, which depends on the material and geometric properties of the columns. The analysis parameters include the concrete compressive strength ($f^{\prime}_c=20-110N/mm^2$), steel yield strength ($f_y=220-850N/mm^2$), width-to-thickness (B/t) ratios in the range of 15-52, as well as the length-to-width (L/B) ratios in the range of 2-4. The predictions of the behaviour, ultimate axial strengths, and failure modes are compared with the available experimental results to verify the accuracy of the models developed. Furthermore, a design model is proposed for short square and rectangular CFSTCs. Additionally, comparisons with the prediction of axial load capacity by using the proposed design model, Australian Standard and Eurocode 4 code provisions for box composite columns are carried out.

In this study we establish a process to predict hardening behavior considering the Bauschinger effect for zircaloy-4 sheets. When a metal is compressed after tension in forming, the yield strength decreases. For this reason, the Bauschinger effect should be considered in FE simulations of spring-back. We suggested a suitable specimen size and a method for determining the optimum tightening torque for simple shear tests. Shear stress-strain curves are obtained for five materials. We developed a method to convert the shear load-displacement curve to the effective stress-strain curve with FEA. We simulated the simple shear forward/reverse test using the combined isotropic/kinematic hardening model. We also investigated the change of the load-displacement curve by varying the hardening coefficients. We determined the hardening coefficients so that they follow the hardening behavior of zircaloy-4 in experiments.
