Photovoltaic (PV) panels are used in high-rise buildings to convert solar energy to electricity. Due to the considerable energy consumption of high-rise buildings, applying PV technology is of great significance to energy saving. In the application of PV panels, one of the most important construction issues is the connection of the PV panel with the main structures. One major difficulty of the connection design is that the PV panel connection consists of two separate components with coupling and indeterminate dimension. In this paper, the gap element is employed in these two separated but coupled components, i.e., hook and catch. Topology optimization is applied to optimize and design the cross-section of the PV panel connection. Pareto optimization is conducted to operate the optimization subject to multiple load scenarios. The initial design for the topology optimization is determined by the common design specified by the Technical Code for Glass Curtain Wall Engineering (JGJ 102-2003). Gravity and wind load scenarios are considered for the optimization and numerical analysis. Post analysis is conducted for the optimal design obtained by the topology optimization due to the manufactory requirements. Generally, compared with the conventional design, the optimized connector reduces material use with improved structural characteristics.
Position of a circular or elliptical cutout within an orthotropic plate has great influence on its buckling behavior. This paper aims at finding the optimal position (both location and orientation) of a single circular/elliptical cutout, within an orthotropic rectangular plate, that maximizes the critical buckling load. We consider linear buckling of simply supported orthotropic plates under uniaxial edge loads. To obtain the optimal positions of the cutouts, we have employed a MATLAB optimization routine coupled with buckling computation in ANSYS. Our results show that the position of the cutout that maximizes the buckling load has great dependence on the material properties, laminate configurations, and the geometrical parameters of the plate. These optimal results, for a number of plate geometries and cutout sizes, are reported in this paper. These results will be useful in the design of perforated orthotropic plates against buckling failure.

An inverse method is presented to obtain material's flow properties by using small punch test. This procedure employs, as the objective function of inverse analysis, the balance of measured load-di splacement response and calculated one during deformation. In order to guarantee convergence to global minimum, simulated annealing method was adopted to optimize the current objective function. In addition, artificial neural network was used to predict the load-displacement response under given material parameters which is the most time consuming and limits applications of global optimization methods to these kinds of problems. By implementing the simulated annealing for optimization along with calculating load-displacement curve by neural network, material parameters were identified irrespective of initial values within very short time for simulated test data. We also tested the present method for error-containing experimental data and showed that the flow properties of material were well predicted.
The shape optimization of the stator and the rotor is important for electrical motor design. Among many motor design parameters, the stator tooth and yoke width are a few of the determinants of noload back-EMF and load torque. In this study, we proposed an equivalent magnetic circuit of motor stator for efficient stator tooth and yoke width shape optimization. Using the proposed equivalent magnetic circuit, we found the optimal tooth and yoke width for minimal magnetic resistance. To verify if load torque is truly maximized for the optimal tooth and yoke width indicated by the proposed method, we performed finite element analysis (FEA) to calculate load torque for different tooth and yoke widths. From the study, we confirmed reliability and usability of the proposed equivalent magnetic circuit.
Wind tunnel testing technique has been established as a powerful experimental method for predicting wind-induced loads on high-rise buildings. Accurate assessment of the design wind load combinations for tall buildings on the basis of wind tunnel tests is an extremely important and complicated issue. The traditional design practice for determining wind load combinations relies partly on subjective judgments and lacks a systematic and reliable method of evaluating critical load cases. This paper presents a novel optimization-based framework for determining wind tunnel derived load cases for the structural design of wind sensitive tall buildings. The peak factor is used to predict the expected maximum resultant responses from the correlated three-dimensional wind loads measured at each wind angle. An optimized convex hull is further developed to serve as the design envelope in which the peak values of the resultant responses at any azimuth angle are enclosed to represent the critical wind load cases. Furthermore, the appropriate number of load cases used for design purposes can be predicted based on a set of Pareto solutions. One 30-story building example is used to illustrate the effectiveness and practical application of the proposed optimization-based technique for the evaluation of peak resultant wind-induced load cases.

The stability of the propulsion system is crucial for the autonomous vessel. Multiple power generation and propulsion systems should be provided for the stability of the propulsion system. High power generation capacity is calculated for stability, resulting in economical decline due to low load operation. To solve this problem, we need to optimize the power system. In this paper, an OPMS for electric propulsion ship is constructed. The OPMS consists of a hybrid power generation system, an energy storage system, and a control load system. The power generation system consists of a dual fuel engine, the energy storage system is a battery, and the control load system consists of the propulsion load, continuous load, intermittent load, cargo part load and deck machine load. The power system was constructed by modeling the characteristics of each system. For the experiment, a scenario based on ship operation was prepared and the stability and economical efficiency were compared with existing electric propulsion ships.
In terms of waste load allocation, inequality of waste load discharge must be considered as well as economic aspects such as minimization of waste load abatement. The inequality of waste load discharge between areas was calculated with Gini coefficient and was included as one of the objective functions of the multi-objective waste load allocation. In the past, multi-objective functions were usually weighted and then transformed into a single objective optimization problem. Recently, however, due to the difficulties of applying weighting factors, multi-objective genetic algorithms (GA) that require only one execution for optimization is being developed. This study analyzes multi-objective waste load allocation using NSGA-II-aJG that applies Pareto-dominance theory and it's adaptation of jumping gene. A sensitivity analysis was conducted for the parameters that have significant influence on the solution of multi-objective GA such as population size, crossover probability, mutation probability, length of chromosome, jumping gene probability. Among the five aforementioned parameters, mutation probability turned out to be the most sensitive parameter towards the objective function of minimization of waste load abatement. Spacing and maximum spread are indexes that show the distribution and range of optimum solution, and these two values were the optimum or near optimal values for the selected parameter values to minimize waste load abatement.

Optimization of mesh discretization has been proposed to improve the accuracy of limit analysis solution of collapse load by using the Rigid Body Spring Model(R. B. S. M) under the plane strain condition. Moreover, the fracture behaviour of materials was investigated by employing the fracture mechanism of a spring connecting the triangular rigid body element. It has been clarified that the collapse load and the geometry of slip boundary for optimized mesh discretization were close to those of the slip line solution. Further, the wedge-shaped fracture of a cylinder under a lateral load and the central fracture of a strip in the drawing process were well simulated.
The safety block which prevents drop of laborers at high altitude was analyzed by finite element method. Elastic analysis was done by Ansys ver. 11.0. and tetrahedral meshing was used. As load applied more vertically at the fixed face of saw tooth, the stress concentration became smaller and the load distributed broader. When load worked at saw tooth and the shape was more straight to the direction of load, most stresses except principal stress became smaller. When the area of the load increased, principal stress and equivalent stress could be decreased simultaneously. A principal stress and other various stresses occurred in 3D shape, therefore revised model which has smaller equivalent stress than other models shows excellence on the stability and the credibility.
The load bus voltage is controlled by not only using several control device but also generation bus voltage adjustment. This paper deals with a load bus voltage control problem which used optimization and load flow technique. The usage of proposed control algorithm is verified through the comparison with normal load flow on the IEEE 14 sample system. The proposed control algorithm can be used to optimal decision of position and capacity for voltage control device.
