  • This paper proposes a power factor correction circuit with a high efficiency over a wide load range characteristics for a communication power supply. And the characteristic verification is applied to produce a design of prototype. Power factor correction circuit can reduce conduction losses by applying Bridgeless Boost Converter for efficiency. Over a wide load range to maintain the efficient, the control method of a PWM controller is divided by two sections according to the load area. In the low-load region, it was reduced switching losses by applying the critical conduction mode control method. On the other hand, in the heavy-load area, the hysteresis current control method is used to maintain the high efficiency over a wide load range by limiting the peak noise of the inductor.

An Effective Carrier-Based Modulation Strategy to Reduce the Switching Losses for Indirect Matrix Converters

  • In this paper, an effective carrier-based modulation (CBM) strategy to reduce the switching losses for indirect matrix converters (IMCs) is presented. The discontinuous pulse width modulation method is applied to decrease the switching numbers in one carrier cycle, and an optimum offset voltage is selected to avoid commutations of the high output phase currents. By decreasing the switching numbers along with avoiding commutation of the high currents, the proposed CBM strategy significantly reduces the switching losses in IMCs. In addition, the proposed CBM strategy is independent of load conditions, such as load power and power factor, and it has good performance in terms of the input/output waveforms. Simulation and experimental results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed CBM strategy.

전류 고조파에 기인하는 변압기 손실 해석 (Power Loss Analysis of Transformer Caused By Current Harmonics)

  • This study investigates transformer losses caused by current harmonics. Electrical transformers are designed to work under sinusoidal voltage and current waves at a rated frequency. Recently, various nonlinear loads, such as power electronic converters, are connected to a power system; these converters generate current harmonics. Current harmonics increase power loss in transformers, which results in several problems, including temperature increase of the transformer and insulation damage. These problems will eventually shorten the operational life of the transformer. In this study, different types of losses caused by current harmonics in three-phase transformers are studied under linear and nonlinear load conditions. Linear loads are simulated and experimented on using pure resistance load, whereas nonlinear loads are simulated and experimented on using a three-phase twelve-pulse thyristor full-bridge rectifier. The different types of losses in three-phase transformers are evaluated analytically through the experimental result and simulation in PSiM.

  • As the Three-level ZVS PWM DC-DC converter operates likewise full-bridge ZVS PWM DC-DC converter and the blocking voltage of each switching device is a half of the DC-link voltage, it is suitable for the high imput voltage applications. However, it has some problems as follows; The blocking voltage of each devices is unbalanced and it causes the power losses of the inner switching devices to be increased. Also, it has narrow load range so that the switching losses and the efficiency are reduced as it goes to the light load. This paper presents an nove Three-level ZVS PWM DC-DC converter, which can reduce the overvoltage of the outer switches, eliminate the unbalance of the voltage sharing between the switches at turn-off due to the stray inductances, and operate from no load to full load. The characteristics and the performances of the proposed Three-level ZVS PWM DC-DC converter are verified by simulation and experimental results

  • In this paper, design of a variable inductor using MR Fluid Gap is proposed for wide load range efficiency improvement of a bidirectional DC-DC converter. As compared to conventional constant value inductor designed to have negative current for ZVS at heavy load but suffers high losses at light load due to its small inductance, the proposed variable inductor not only have small inductance at high current for ZVS but also it has large inductance at low current to decrease light load losses.

  • In this paper, a loss-minimization nonlinear torque control for Electrical Vehicle(EV) induction motors is proposed. To improve the efficiency of the induction motors, it is important to find the optimal flux reference that minimize power losses. The proposed optimal flux reference is derived using a power loss function that is constructed with stator resistance losses, rotor resistance losses and core losses. And the time-varying load torque and the rotor resistance variation are considered in the power loss function. An algorithm that identifying the load torque is used. The rotor flux observer is used to obtain an accurate flux value regardless of the rotor resistance variation. Simulation results show a significant reduction in energy losses.

  • Stoichiometric combustion in spark ignition (SI) engines has an advantage of meeting future stringent emission regulations. However, the drawback of the combustion is a lower thermal efficiency than that of lean burn. In this study, energy losses in a natural gas stoichiometric SI engine generator were analyzed to establish a strategy for improving the generating efficiency (GE). The energy losses were investigated based on dynamometer and load bank experiments. As the intake manifold pressure increased in the dynamometer experiment, the brake thermal efficiency (BTE) increased mainly due to the reduction in the pumping and mechanical losses. In the load bank experiment, the generating power and GE increased with the increased intake manifold pressure. The generating power and GE were lower than the brake power and BTE due to the cooling fan power and the losses in the generator.

홉필드 신경회로망의 전력경제급전에의 응용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Application of Hopfield Neural Network to Economic Load Dispatch)

  • Hopfield neural network has been applied to the problem of economic load dispatch(ELD) of electric power. The optimum values of neuron potentials are represented in terms of large numbers. The differential synchronous transition mode is used in this simulation. Through case studies, we have shown the possibility of the application of neural network to ELD. In case of including the transmission losses, the proposed method has an advantage that the problem can be solved simply with one neural network, without calculating incremental fuel costs and incremental losses required by traditional method.

Experimental Works and Power Loss Calculations of Surface-Mounted Permanent Magnet Machines

  • Surface-mounted permanent magnet (PM) machines were examined experimentally and theoretically, through power loss measurements and calculations. Windage, friction and copper losses were calculated using simple analytical equations and finite element (FE) analyses. Stator core losses were calculated by determining core loss coefficients through curve-fitting and magnetic behavior analysis through non-linear FE calculations. Rotor eddy current losses were calculated using FE analyses that considered the time harmonics of phase current according to load. Core, windage and friction open-circuit losses and copper loss were determined experimentally to test the validity of the analyses.

A Hybrid Modulation Strategy with Reduced Switching Losses and Neutral Point Potential Balance for Three-Level NPC Inverter

  • In this paper, carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM), space vector PWM (SVPWM) and reduced switching losses PWM (RSLPWM) for the three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) inverter are introduced. In the case of the neutral point (NP) potential (NPP) offset, an asymmetric disposition PWM (ASPDPWM) strategy is proposed, which can output PWM sequences correctly and suppress the lower order harmonics of the inverter effectively. An NPP balance strategy based on carrier based PWM (CBPWM) is analyzed. A hybrid modulation strategy combining RSLPWM and the NPP balance based on CBPWM is proposed, and hysteresis control is adopted to switch between the two modulation strategies. An experimental prototype of the three-level NPC inverter is built. The effectiveness of the hybrid modulation is verified with a resistance-inductance load and a permanent magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM) load, respectively. The experimental results show that reduced switching losses and an acceptable NPP can be effectively achieved in the hybrid modulation strategy.
