A Cost-Effective Pigsty Monitoring System Based on a Video Sensor

  • Automated activity monitoring has become important in many applications. In particular, automated monitoring is an important issue in large-scale management of group-housed livestock because it can save a significant part of farm workers' time or minimize the damage caused by livestock problems. In this paper, we propose an automated solution for measuring the daily-life activities of pigs by using video data in order to manage the group-housed pigs. Especially, we focus on the circadian rhythm of group-housed pigs under windowless and 24-hour light-on conditions. Also, we derive a cost-effective solution within the acceptable range of quality for the activity monitoring application. From the experimental results with the video monitoring data obtained from two pig farms, we believe our method based on circadian rhythm can be applied for detecting management problems of group-housed pigs in a cost-effective way.

Occurrence and Characteristics of Methicillin-Resistant and -Susceptible Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from the Beef Production Chain in Korea

  • The emergence and persistence of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in livestock animals have been reported as a potential risk factor for transmission to humans. In this study, we investigated the nationwide prevalence and characteristics of MRSA and MSSA in the Korean beef production system, including retail markets, slaughterhouses, and cattle farms. From a total of 1,285 samples, only 5 MRSA strains were isolated: from a farmer (1 ST72 MRSA), a carcass sample from a slaughterhouse (1 ST72 MRSA), and beef cattle (3 ST5 MRSA). In addition, 11 MSSA strains were isolated from beef cattle (n=3), humans (1 farmer, 1 slaughterhouse worker, and 4 retail market workers), and carcass samples (n=1) and slaughterhouse environment (n=1). Although the prevalence of MRSA and MSSA in beef cattle was much lower than that reported in pigs, 5/5 MRSA and 2/11 MSSA strains displayed multiple drug resistance (MDR) phenotypes. Unlike the swine-associated MRSA, no correlation was found between tetracycline/zinc resistance and MDR phenotype. However, MRSA strains had an identical set of staphylococcal enterotoxins and exhibited enhanced levels of resistance to antimicrobial peptides (PMAP-36 and LL-37) compared to the MSSA strains. In conclusion, continued and systemic surveillance of livestock, meat products, and humans in close contact with livestock/meat products is necessary to prevent the transmission of MRSA and MSSA to humans.

Biofilm Formation, Antimicrobial Peptide Resistance, and Hydrogen Peroxide Resistance in Livestock-Associated Staphylococcus aureus Isolates

  • 최근 가축에서 유래된 메티실린에 내성이 있는 황색포도상구균과 감수성을 보이는 황색포도상구균(LA-MRSA/LA-MSSA)에 의한 사람의 감염증이 증가하는 추세이다. 이러한 LA-MRSA 및 LA-MSSA균주는 가축을 비롯한 축산업에 종사하는 사람들에게 전파가 이루어질 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 원유, 육우, 축산 종사자에서 분리된 20개의 MRSA 및 MSSA 균주를 이용하여 생물막 형성, 항균 펩타이드에 대한 저항성 및 과산화수소 저항성과 같은 황색포도상구균의 주요 병원성 인자를 평가하였다. 생물막 형성 실험에서는 MRSA와 MSSA간의 차이는 없었으며, 동물 유래 분리주와 사람 유래 분리주들 간의 비교에서도 차이가 없음이 확인되었다. BMAP-28에 대한 감수성 시험 결과 MRSA-MSSA 또는 동물 분리-사람 분리 간의 차이가 없음을 확인하였다. 생물막 형성과 BMAP-28 감수성과는 달리, 원유에서 분리된 MRSA 균주들의 H2O2에 대한 내성 증가가 확인 되었다. 본 연구를 통하여 가축 및 축산업 종사자에서 분리된 LA-MRSA와 LA-MSSA 균주의 주요 병원성 인자를 확인하였으며, 숙주 및 환경에서의 생존과 전파 가능성을 이해하는데 기초 자료로 활용 될 수 있을 것이다.

양돈장 내의 환경 요인에 따른 내부 유해인자의 변동 모니터링 (Monitoring of Internal Harmful Factors According to Environmental Factors in Pig Farm)

  • With the decrease of the agricultural population in Korea, the workers who is vulnerable to labor are increasing in agricultural industry because of aging, feminization of population. They are exposed in poor working environment with higher temperature and concentrations of dust, gas. Higher concentration of harmful gas and dust can cause chronic and acute disease to workers depending on exposure intensity and frequency. In order to improve the working environment in the livestock facilities, It is important to secure monitoring data of the thermal environment and the concentration of harmful gases and fine dust. Multi-point measurement was performed to analyze the regional environmental conditions in the pig rooms. When analyzing the working environment, video monitoring was conducted to analyze the concentration changes of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and fine dust according to worker movement and work type. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide monitoring result showed 1.5~2 times higher concentrations than other work when working in the pigs living zone, and 2~4 times higher than other work when working to increase the activity of pigs. In the case of fine dust, the result was 1.3 times higher than the worker's exposure standard in a specific work. The concentrations of gases and dusts from pig farms are not of concern for acute poisoning in normal work, but there is a risk of chronic respiratory disease if they are continuously exposed. Accordingly, there is a need for development of work environment monitoring device tailored to workers and preparation of alternatives.

  • Since the recent COVID-19 pandemic, countries have been strengthening trade protection for their security, and the importance of securing strategic materials, such as food, is drawing attention. In addition to the cultural aspects, the global preference for food produced in Korea is increasing because of the Korean Wave. Thus, the Korean food industry can be developed into a high-value-added export food industry. Currently, Korea has a low self-sufficiency rate for foodstuffs apart from rice. Korea also suffers from problems arising from population decline, aging, rapid climate change, and various animal and plant diseases. It is necessary to develop technologies that can overcome the production structures highly dependent on the outside world of food and foster them into export-type system industries. The global agricultural industry-related technologies are actively being modified via data accumulation, e.g., environmental data, production information, and distribution and consumption information in climate and production facilities, and by actively expanding the introduction of the latest information and communication technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence. However, long-term research and investment should precede the field of living organisms. Compared to other industries, it is necessary to overcome poor production and labor environment investment efficiency in the food industry with respect to the production cost, equipment postmanagement, development tailored to the eye level of field workers, and service models suitable for production facilities of various sizes. This paper discusses the flow of domestic and international technologies that form the core issues of the site centered on the 4th Industrial Revolution in the field of agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. It also explains the environmental awareness production technologies centered on sustainable intelligence platforms that link climate change responses, optimization of energy costs, and mass production for unmanned production, distribution, and consumption using the unstructured data obtained based on detection and growth measurement data.

  • 라즈베리 파이나 아두이노를 이용하여 온도, 습도, 기울기, 압력 센서 등에서 수집한 정보는 자동 항온, 항습 시스템 등에 활용되고 있다. 또 농축산업에 활용하여 원격에서 스마트폰만으로 시스템을 제어함으로써 농축산업 종사자들이 편리하게 활용하기도 한다. 일반적으로 온도, 습도는 꺾은선 그래프 등으로 표현하여 변화를 실시간으로 감시하는 역할을 수행하기도 한다. 온도를 시각적으로 표현하는 기술은 최근 코로나19의 발열 검사를 위해 적외선 기기를 이용해 직관적으로 활용되기도 한다. 본 논문에서는 라즈베리 파이와 DHT11 센서에서 수집된 정보를 직관적인 시각화를 통해 공간상의 온도변화를 예측하고 즉각적인 대응이 가능하도록 제안한다. 이를 위해 온도, 습도를 효과적으로 시각화하기 위해 알고리즘을 만들었고, 일부 센서에 결함이 발생하는 경우에도 데이터 표현이 가능하다.

The Impact of COVID 19 on the Meat Supply Chain in the USA: A Review

  • The COVID 19 pandemic resulted in a considerable influence on the world economy. Being a big sector of the economy, the food supply chain struggled. The meat supply chain was most notably affected as every part of the supply chain from farm to shelf was closely inter-related. With the closure of businesses and restaurants the demand for at home food from grocery stores increased. Meat production facilities were impacted when the virus spread to the workers causing facilities to close or line speeds to slow. The combination of these two issues, in turn, led to there being less meat on the shelves. With less meat animals being harvested, there was less demand for livestock leading to farmers having an excess in slaughter ready animals. The decreased demand for livestock led to economic issues as money was lost in multiple sections of the supply chain. Aside from the economy and supply chain issues, other issues include concerns over the safety of meat products due to decreased safety protocols to increase line speed. Additionally, concerns of animal welfare with the excess of animals being culled were raised due to decreased capacity in processing facilities. While this review paper mainly focuses on characterizing the impact of COVID 19 on the meat supply chain in the USA, the compiled information should be able to provide practical insights to the meat/food industry across the globe to develop potential mitigating strategies against the COVID 19 and/or any similar pandemic incidences in the future.

좀진드기 교상에 의한 피부 질환의 집단 발생에 관한 역학 조사 (An Epidemiologic Study on Occupational Dermatosis Associated with Mites)

  • An outbreak of dermatosis occurred in a livestock fodder factory at Kyongju in May 1994. Authors conducted a questionnaire survey on 60 workers in the factory and a dermatologist examined their skin lesion. Authors also collected mites and identified them. The obtained results were summarized as follows; 1. Twenty-eight cases of dermatosis were identified with attack rate of 46.7%. Attack rate was not different by department, age, sex, educational level and employment duration. Attack rate was 67.5% in productive worker and 5.0% in clerical workers (p<0.01) but was not significantly different between departments among productive workers (p>0.05). 2. Three cases among 28 dermatosis cases and one subject among 32 non-cases had a history of same dermatosis last year. Only one of dermatosis cases had a history of dermatosis among family members. History of other skin lesion and allergy was very rare in both cases and non-cases. 3. Skin lesions of the cases were rice-sized erythematous rapules or vesicles with a central biting point. Onset date of dermatosis was between May 1 and June 10. Duration was from one day to more than 30 days. Skin lesion was most frequent at the back(75.0%), and also observed at the arms(64.3%), abdomen(60.7%), legs(57.1%), chest(32.1%) and neck (25.0%). Skin lesion was aggravated while workers are sweeping the floor(35.7%), working at the workplace(21.4%) and in bed at night(28.6%). 4. Total 1,637 mites were collected and identified into 3 suborder, 7 families and 17 species. Dermatophagoides farinae was most frequent md most of the species identified were blood sucking mites. Authors concluded that the. outbreak of dermatosis was brought about by mite-bites and grain beetle parasitizing Acarophenax tribolii was the most suspected species. Further studies to identify the specific species causing dermatosis and route of import are needed.

품목별 농업인 연구모임의 발전방안 (The Desirable Development Direction of Farmer's Study Group in Agricultural Extension Work in Korea)

  • The objective of this study is to suggest the developmental tasks for the successful fostering the Farmer's Study Group which have been guided by the agricultural extension work since 1994 in Korea. The 3,278 farmers study groups with 148,420 memberships have been organized in field of grains, cash crop, horticulture, livestock, improving living conditions, food processing and so on. Although the number of study groups have rapidly expanded, there also are tasks to be secured for their successful development in terms of (a) desirable phase of the study groups and goals of its fostering, (b) managements / administration of them, (c) long-term tasks to be reviewed. With regard to the desirable phase of the study groups and goals of its fostering, they should secure differential mission and the way of works compare to the other farmer's groups. Also, there should be consensus on the proper number of study groups to be fostered with a agricultural technical center at local level. With regard to the managements / administration of the study groups, there should be the different support, assistance and guidance according to the developmental level of the groups. For these, there should be evaluation works on the groups, and guidance manuals for the extension workers. Also extension works should facilitate the establishment of networks among groups over the counties. Finally, to establish the nationwide association in hierarchy and to make the cooperative works with similar farmer's group, doing the value-added activities rather than mere information exchange, and the introduction of capacity building programs for the extension workers are long-term tasks needed to review for the successful fostering study groups.

식육판매업소 종사자의 축산물 HACCP 제도 요구도 분석 - 서울 및 경기지역의 HACCP 지정업소와 미지정업소를 중심으로 - (Analysis on the Demands for HACCP System at Meat Retailors - Based on HACCP-certified and Non-certified in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Korea -)

  • 본 연구는 서울 및 경기지역 식육판매업소의 종사자 271명을 대상으로 HACCP 지정업소 119명과 HACCP 미지정업소 152명에게 축산물 HACCP 제도 요구도에 관한 설문을 의뢰하였다. 설문지는 일반사항과 HACCP 및 축산물안전관리 요구도로 구분하였으며, 평가한 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 조사대상자의 70.8%는 남성이었고, 연령은 30대가 35.1%,40대가 31.4%로 나타났다. 종사경력은 3년 미만이 28.0%였으며, 10년 초과는 26.6%로 나타났다. 직위는 사원이52.0%로 가장 많았고, 소득은 100-150만원 이하가 32.8%,150-250만원 이하가 31.7%를 차지하였다. 학력은 고등학교 졸업이 64.9%로 많은 분포를 나타냈으며, 계약상태는 정규직이 62.4%로 많았고, 근무시간은 60시간 초과가 48.4%를 차지하였다.HACCP 및 축산물 안전관리 요구도의 요인분석 결과HACCP 및 축산물 안전관리 요구도 속성들은 HACCP 지원, HACCP 홍보 및 교육, 축산물 안전관리의 3가지 요인으로 분류되었으며, 전체업소에서 HACCP 지원요인이 3.91점으로 HACCP 홍보 및 교육요인의 3.83점과 축산물 안전관리요인의 3.72점보다 요구도 점수가 높게 나타났다.HACCP 지정여부에 따른 HACCP 요구도의 차이를 분석한 결과, HACCP 지정업소(4.11점)가 HACCP 미지정업소(3.57점)보다 높게 조사되었으며, 항목분석 결과, HACCP지정업소는 '정부의 대국민 축산물 HACCP 홍보'(4.35점,p<0.001) 항목이, HACCP 미지정업소는 'HACCP 지정을 위한 정부의 투자지원'(3.79점, p<0.05) 항목이 요구도 문항 중 가장 높게 나타나 이에 대한 관심이 높은 것으로 간주되었다. 요구도 요인별로 살펴보면 HACCP 지원 요구도 요인의 경우, 가장 높은 점수를 보인 항목은 'HACCP지정을 위한 정부의 투자지원'으로 HACCP 지정업소(4.18점)가, HACCP 미지정업소(3.79점) 보다 유의적으로 더 높은 요구도를 보였으며(p<0.01), HACCP 홍보 및 교육 요구도 요인의 경우, 요구도가 가장 높은 항목은 '정부의 대국민 축산물 HACCP 홍보' 항목으로 HACCP 지정업소(4.35점)가 HACCP 미지정업소(3.75점)에 비해 더 높게 나타나(p<0.01) 이에 대한 관심도가 높은 것으로 간주되었다. 축산물 안전관리 요구도 요인의 경우, 요구도가 가장 높은 항목은 '축산물 유해 잔류물질의 검사의 강화'로HACCP 지정업소(4.14점)가 HACCP 미지정업소(3.53점)에 비해 더 높은 점수를 나타내 관심도가 높았다(p<0.001).한편, 축산물 HACCP 및 축산물 안전관리에 대한 관심은 연령이 적고 법적 근로시간을 준수하는 학력이 높은 중간관리자 집단에서 높게 나타난 바, 축산물 HACCP을 위한 교육매체 개발이나 교육대상자 교육 시 고려해야 할 요인으로 간주되었다. 이상의 결과에 의하면, 안전한 식품 소비를 위해서는 여러 전문가들이(Choe et al., 2004; Kim et al., 2002; Namet al., 2007) 식품안전 및 위생과 관련한 정부의 시책 강화와 식품가공업자 및 유통업자의 적극적인 노력이 필요하다고 역설한 바와 같이, HACCP 지원에 대한 정부의 관심을 고취시키고 식육판매업소 종사자들에게 다양한 방법으로 적극적인 HACCP 홍보 및 교육을 실시하면, 이들의 축산물 HACCP 및 축산물 안전관리 행동과 위생이 향상됨과 동시에 최종 소비자에게 전달 될 때까지 식육의 안전성이 훨씬 확보될 것으로 사료되었다.
