Charge Equalization Converter with Parallel Primary Winding for Series Connected Lithium-Ion Battery strings (트랜스포머 1차측 병렬 구조를 가진 직렬 연결 리튬이온 배터리 전하 균일 컨버터)

  • A charge equalization converter with parallel-connected primary windings of transformers is proposed in digest. The proposed work effectively balance the voltage among Lithium-Ion battery cells despite each battery cell has low voltage gap compared with its SOC. The principle of the proposed work is that the equalizing energy from all battery strings moves to the lowest voltage battery through the isolated dc/dc converter controlled by the corresponding bi-directional switch. In this digest, a prototype of four Lithium-Ion battery cells is optimally designed and implemented, and experimental results show that the proposed method has excellent cell balancing performance.

  • Room temperature Li+ ion conductivities of Li3xLa(2/3-x)TiO3 system with x=0.117~0.317 were measured by complex impedance method. ICP, SEM and XRD analysis were conducted to study the main factor which influence the Li+ ion conductivity. Li+ ion conductivity seems to have a close relationship with the crystal structure of primitive cell increase as the primitive cell as close to cubic.

Charge-discharge Behaviour of Lithium Ion Secondary Battery Using LiCo$O_2$ Synthesized by a Solution Phase Reaction (액상 반응에 의해 합성한 리튬코발트산화물을 이용한 Lithium ion 2차전지의 충방전 특성)

  • The LiCo$O_2$ powder was synthesized by a solution phase reaction. This shows a high (003) peak intensity and low (104) or (101) peak intensities in X-ray diffraction spectra. The LiCo$O_2$/Li cell shows an initial discharge capacity of 102.9mAh/g and an average discharge potential or 3.877V at a current density of 50mA/g between 3.0~4.2V. The peaks of dQ/dV plot are associated with Li ion intercalation/deintercalation reaction. To evaluate the cycleability of an actual battery system, cylindrical lithium ion cell was manufactured using graphitized MPCF anode and LiCoO$_2$ cathode. After 100th cycle, this cel maintains 80% capacity of 10th cycle value. The LiCoO$_2$/MPCF cell has a high discharge voltage of 3.6~3.7V and a good cycle life performance on cycling between 4.2~2.7V.

Detection of Unbalanced Voltage Cells in Series-connected Lithium-ion Batteries Using Single-frequency Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

  • For a battery module where single cells are connected in series, the single cells should each have a similar state of charge (SOC) to prevent them from being exposed to an overcharge or over-discharge during charge-discharge cycling. To detect the existence of unbalanced SOC cells in a battery module, we propose a simple measurement method using a single-frequency response of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). For a commercially available graphite/nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide lithium-ion cell, the cell impedance increases significantly below SOC20%, while the impedance in the medium SOC region (SOC20%-SOC80%) remains low with only minor changes. This impedance behavior is mostly due to the elementary processes of cathode reactions in the cell. Among the impedance values (Z, Z', Z"), the imaginary component of Z" regarding cathode reactions changes heavily as a function of SOC, in particular, when the EIS measurement is performed around 0.1 Hz. Thanks to the significant difference in the time constant of cathode reactions between ≤SOC10% and ≥SOC20%, a single-frequency EIS measurement enlarges the difference in impedance between balanced and unbalanced cells in the module and facilitates an ~80% improvement in the detection signal compared to results with conventional EIS measurements.

  • The most common carbonaceous anode materials of lithium ion batteries (natural graphite, artificial graphite, hard carbon, and mesocarbon microbeads) were utilized as an electrode in lithium ion capacitors. It could be able to enhance the energy density of capacitors due to the intercalation of lithium ion. In this work, the properties of capacitors using the symmetric electrode were measured by organizing coin cell typed capacitors. Also, we made other capacitors having pre-intercalated lithium ions at one side of the electrode. The results of electrochemical measurements for these capacitors show that the storage capacitance was appeared. In other words, if the migration of lithium ions is supplied continuously in the electrolytes, lithium ions can be diffused into the carbonaceous materials. And it results in the improvement of capacitance compared to only using symmetric carbonaceous electrodes. Also, we conducted the same measurement with graphene oxide having a the large specific area in the same condition. Herein, we recognized that the large specific area is extremely important for supercapacitors.

  • For the safe and reliable operation of Lithium-ion batteries in Electric Vehicles (EVs) or Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), it is essential to have accurate information of the battery such as State of Charge (SOC). Many kinds of different techniques to estimate the SOC of the batteries have been developed so far such as the Kalman Filter. However, when it is applied to the multiple number of batteries it is difficult to maintain the accuracy of the estimation over all cells due to the difference in parameter value of each cell. Moreover the difference in the parameter of each cell may become larger as the operation time accumulates due to aging. In this paper a novel Deep Neural Network (DNN) based SOC estimation method for multi cell application is proposed. In the proposed method DNN is implemented to learn non-linear relationship of the voltage and current of the lithium-ion battery at different SOCs and different temperatures. In the training the voltage and current data of the Lithium battery at charge and discharge cycles obtained at different temperatures are used. After the comprehensive training with the data obtained with a cell resulting estimation algorithm is applied to the other cells. The experimental results show that the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of the estimation is 0.56% at 25℃, and 3.16% at 60℃ with the proposed SOC estimation algorithm.

  • The performance of Li-ion system based on $LiCoO_2$ and Graphite is well optimized for the 3C applications. The charge-discharge mode, the manufacturing process, the cell performance and the thermal reactions affecting safety has been explained in the engineering point of view. The energy density of the current LIB system is in the range of 300~400 Wh/l. In order to achieve the energy density higher than 500 Wh/l, the active materials should be modified or changed. Adopting new high capacity anode materials would be effective to improve energy density.

  • Over the past few years, smart devices, including smartphones, have been continuously required by users based on portability. The performance is improving. Ubiquitous computing environment and sensor network are also improved. Due to various network connection technologies, mobile terminals are widely used. Smart terminals need technology to make energy monitoring more detailed for more stable operation during use. The smart terminal which is light in small size generates the power shortage problem due to the various multimedia task among the terminal operation. Various estimation hardwares have been developed to prevent such situation in advance and to operate stable terminals. However, the method and performance of estimating the remaining amount are not relatively good. In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the remaining amount of smart terminals. The Capacity Estimation of lithium ion cells for stable operation was estimated based on machine learning. Learning the characteristics of lithium ion cells in use, not the existing hardware estimation method, through a map learning algorithm using machine learning technique The optimized results are estimated and applied.

Development of Lithium-Ion based Onboard Battery for Space Launch Vehicle (우주발사체 탑재용 리튬이온 배터리 개발)

  • Lithium-ion batteries providing high gravimetric energy density are rapidly replacing Ni-Cd and Ni-H2 in aerospace applications. The main advantage is the weight reduction of the battery system. Weight is a major concern in aerospace applications. Also, lithium-ion offer low thermal dissipation, high energy efficiency, and low cell cost. The Onboard battery module for KSLV-I(Korea Space Launch Vehicle) contains 80 Sony US18650 cells configured as 10 strings in parallel, with each string containing 8 series connected cells. This allows to meet voltage and capacity requirements specified for the mission. In this paper design description and specifications of lithium-ion battery developed are presented. Qualification test flow is also shown to make sure the performance in the predicted space environment. Electrical performance was simulated by dedicated program, and verified with electronic load. Lastly, the capacity was proven on real equipment load assembly.
