  • A sensitive eight-channel high-Tc Superconducting Interference Device (SQUID) detection system for magnetic contaminant in a lithium ion battery anode was developed. Finding ultra-small metallic foreign matter is an important issue for a manufacturer because metallic contaminants carry the risk of an internal short. When contamination occurs, the manufacturer of the product suffers a great loss from recalling the tainted product. Metallic particles with outer dimensions smaller than 100 microns cannot be detected using a conventional X-ray imaging system. Therefore, a highly sensitive detection system for small foreign matter is required. We have already developed a detection system based on a single-channel SQUID gradiometer and horizontal magnetization. For practical use, the detection width of the system should be increased to at least 65 mm by employing multiple sensors. In this paper, we present an 8-ch high-Tc SQUID roll-to-roll system for inspecting a lithium-ion battery anode with a width of 65 mm. A special microscopic type of a cryostat was developed upon which eight SQUID gradiometers were mounted. As a result, small iron particles of 35 microns on a real lithium-ion battery anode with a width of 70 mm were successfully detected. This system is practical for the detection of contaminants in a lithium ion battery anode sheet.

  • Using a high pressure homonizer, we report on the electrochemical performance of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}(LTO)$ particles manufactured as anode active material for lithium ion battery. High-pressure synthesis processing is performed under conditions in which the mole fraction of Li/Ti is 0.9, the synthesis pressure is 2,000 bar and the numbers of passings-through are 5, 7 and 10. The observed X-ray diffraction patterns show that pure LTO is manufactured when the number of passings-through is 10. It is found from scanning electron microscopy analysis that the average size of synthesized particles decreases as the number of passings-through increases. $LiCoO_2-based$ active cathode materials are used to fabricate several coin half/full cells and their battery characteristics such as lifetime, rate capability and charge transfer resistance are then estimated, revealing quite good electrochemical performance of the LTO particles as an effective anode active material for lithium secondary batteries.

The purpose of this paper is to research and development of flyash anode for lithium polymer battery. We investigated AC impedance response and charge/discharge characteristics of flyash/SPE/Li cells. The radius of semicircle associated with the interfacial resistance of flyash/SPE/Li cell increased very slowly during discharge process from 3.11V to 0.478V. And then the cell resistance was decreased at discharge process from 10% SOC to 0% SOC. Also, The radius of semicircle associated with the interfacial resistance of flyash/SPE/Li cell decreasing very slowly during charge process. And then the cell resistance was increased after 20th discharge precess. The discharge capacity based on flyash of 1st and 20th cycles was 276mAh/g and 143mAh/g.

  • Many small vessels such as fishing boats operate in the world's oceans; accordingly, interest in these small vessels' exhaust-gas problem is increasing. Research on the application of electric-propulsion technology has been steadily conducted; however, the subject is limited to research ships or leisure boats, while research on application efficiency remains insufficient. This study attempts to apply lithium-battery electric-propulsion technology to small ships. A gross tonnage of 9.77, a representative fishing boat, is to be redesigned as a fully electrified ship. Without changing the main cabin's dimensions and fuel tanks, the ship's propulsion system is redesigned based on a lithium-battery electric-propulsion system. In addition, the redesigned system is compared with the original sample ship's diesel-propulsion system for application-effect analysis. The results indicate that under controlled sailing conditions, the weight and volume of the electric-propulsion system are 9.5 and 10.5 times those of the diesel-propulsion system, respectively. These values indicate that the system cannot meet fishing boats' high endurance requirements. Therefore, under the existing technical conditions, applying the full lithium-battery electric-propulsion system to solve the problem of high emissions from fishing boats shows limited feasibility.

  • The purpose of this study is to research and develop solid polymer electrolyte(SPE) for Li polymer battery. The temperature dependence of conductivity, impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical properties of PAN/PVDF electrolytes as a function of a mixed ratio were reported for PAN/PVDF based polymer electrolyte films, which were prepared by thermal gellification method of preweighed PAN/PVDF, plasticizer and Li salt. The conductivity of PAN/PVDF electrolytes was $10^{-3}$S/cm. $PAN_{10}$$PVDF_{10}$$LiClO_4$$PC_{5}$$EC_{5}$ electrolyte has the better conductivity compared to others. The interfacial resistance behavior between the lithium electrode and PAN/PVDF based polymer electrolyte has also been investigated and compare with that between the lithium electrode and the PAN/PVDF based polymer electrolyte.

  • Nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) are increasingly prominent in the energy storage system due to their high energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, they face significant challenges, such as rapid capacity fading and structural instability during high-voltage operation cycles. Addressing these issues, numerous researchers have studied the enhancement of electrochemical performance through the coating of NCM cathode materials with substances like metal oxides, lithium composites, and polymers. Coating these cathode materials serves several critical functions: it acts as a protection barrier against electrolyte decomposition, mitigates the dissolution of transition metals, enhances the structural integrity of the electrode, and can even improve the ionic conductivity of the cathode. Ultimately, these improvements lead to better cycle stability, increased efficiency, and enhanced overall battery life, which are crucial for the advancement of NCM-based lithium-ion batteries in high-demand applications. So, this paper will review various cathode coating materials and examine the roles each plays in improving battery performance.

  • Transition metal oxide-based electrodes for lithium ion batteries have recently attracted much attention because of their high theoretical capacity. Here we report the electrochemical behavior of cobalt oxide nanorods as anodes, prepared by a template-free, one-step electrochemical deposition of cobalt nanorods, followed by an oxidation process. The as-deposited cobalt has a slightly convex columnar structure, and controlled thermal oxidation produces cobalt oxides of different Co/O ratios, while the original shape is largely preserved. As an anode in a rechargeable lithium battery, the Co/O ratio has a strong effect on initial capacity and cycling stability. In particular, the one-dimensional Co@CoxOy core shell structure obtained from a mild heat-treatment results in superior cycling stability.
