  • The present study aims to experimentally investigate the evaporative heat transfer characteristics of Oxi-nitriding SPCC surface. Moreover, the heat transfer coefficient was examined with respect to surface temperature during droplet evaporation. In fact, the nitriding surface showed significant enhancement for anticorrosion performance compared to bare SPCC surface but the thermal resistance also increased due to the formation of compound layer. From the experimental results, the evaporative behavior of sessile droplet on nitriding surface showed similar tendency with the bare surface. Total evaporation time of sessile droplet on the nitriding surface was delayed less than 5%. The difference in heat transfer coefficient increased with the surface temperature, and the maximum difference was estimated to be around 11% at $80^{\circ}C$ surface. Thus, this nitriding surface treatment method could be useful for seawater heat exchanger industries.

  • This study deals with the interaction between buoyancy-induced convection and externally imposed excitation in the form of harmonic rocking and the effect of the interaction upon heat transfer in low-Pr liquids. A wide array of system responses are discussed using the spectral collocation numerical technique. The superposition of buoyancy and Coriolis forces leads to complex fluid flow and heat transfer. The transition to chaotic convection is accelerated, and heat transfer rates are reduced as the enclosure is excited at the fundamental frequency of oscillation associated with the pure buoyancy-driven case. Average heat transfer rates are correlated for Pr=0.02 and 0.03. The heat transfer is affected more in the Pr=0.03 liquid than the case of Pr=0.02.

  • Film boiling is the heat transfer mechanism that can occurs when large temperature differences exist between a cold liquid and hot material. In the nuclear reactor safety analysis, film boiling has become an important issue in recent years. During severe accident, hot molten corium fall into relatively cool water, and fragment into spheres or sphere-like particles. If the steam explosion is triggered, the thermal energy of corium is converted into the mechanical energy that can threaten the integrity of reactor vessel or reactor cavity. One of the important concerns in the heat transfer analysis during pre-mixing stage is the film boiling heat transfer between the corium and water/steam two-phase flow. Until now, considerable works on film boiling heat been performed. However, there is no available correlation adequate for severe accident analysis. In this study, boiling heat transfer correlations have been developed, and their applicable ranges heat been enlarged and their prediction accuracy has been enhanced.

  • To examine the influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics, an experiment has been conducted in a four-vane linear cascade. Flow and heat transfer measurements are made for the inlet Reynolds number of 66000(based on chord length and free-stream velocity). Turbulent intensity and stress were measured using hot wire anemometer, and to measure the convective heat transfer coefficients on the blade surfaces liquid crystal/gold film Intrex technique was used. The disturbance by the unsteady wake is characterized by the unresolved unsteadiness. The unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion of flow in the cascade passage. It also promotes the boundary layer development and transition. The results show that heat transfer coefficients on the suction surface increase with increasing unresolved unsteadiness.

  • Effects of tube inclination on pool boiling heat transfer have been studied for the saturated water at atmospheric pressure. For the analysis, seven inclination angles varying from the horizontal to the vertical and two tube diameters(25.4 and 30.0 mm) are tested. According to the results, inclination angles result in much change on heat transfer. For the same wall superheat(about $5.3^{\circ}C$) the ratio between two heat fluxes for the $45^{\circ}$ inclined and the vertical has the value of more than five when the tube diameter is 25.4mm. As the inclination angle is increasing from the horizontal to the vertical direction heat transfer is gradually increasing because of the increase in liquid agitation. However the detailed tendency depends on the ratio between the tube length and the diameter.

  • Experimental studies on both subcooled and saturated pool boiling of water were performed to obtain local heat transfer coefficients on a $3^{\circ}$ inclined tube of 50.8 mm diameter at atmospheric pressure. The local values were determined at every $45^{\circ}$ from the very bottom to the uppermost of the tube periphery. The maximum and minimum local coefficients were observed at the azimuthal angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$, respectively, in saturated water. The locations of the maxima and the minima were dependent on the inclination angle of the tube as well as the degree of subcooling. The major heat transfer mechanisms were considered to be liquid agitation generated by the sliding bubbles and the creation of big size bubbles through bubble coalescence. As a way of quantifying the heat transfer coefficients, an empirical correlation was suggested.

  • The rivulet is a narrow stream of liquid flowing down a solid surface. Heat transfer of rivulet flow over on inclined heated surface has been investigated experimentally. This problem is of particular interest in the understanding of fundamental mechanism on rivulet heat transfer as well as in the design of a regenerative evaporative cooler. The rivulet is seem to be meandering flow, single wide flat flow. and film flow as rivulet flow rate is increased. Even though the wetted surface area is increased with an increase in the rivulet flow rate, the absorbed heat transfer of rivulet flow from a heated surface strongly depends on the flow pattern of rivulet.

  • In this paper, using a transfer function-based analytical model, major factors influencing the acoustics and combustion instability in a two-stage duct system composed of a nozzle and a combustor were derived and their quantitative effects were evaluated. From the acoustic analysis, it was confirmed that the change in reflection coefficient and mean flow could have a great influence on the instability growth rate, and the area ratio and speed of sound ratio between the nozzle and the combustor are also key parameters to determine combustion instability as well as flame transfer functions.

  • The objective of this is to experimentally investigate the effect of mixed jet on the oxygen transfer characteristics with the primary nozzle area ratio of an annular nozzle ejector for the application of a microbial fuel cell. A direct visualization method with a high speed camera system was used to capture the horizontal mixed jet images, and a binarization technique was used to analyze the images. The clean water unsteady state technique was used for the oxygen transfer measurement. The air-water mixed jet discharging into a water tank behaved similar to a buoyancy or horizontal jet with the primary nozzle area ratio. It was found that an optimum primary nozzle area ratio was observed where the oxygen transfer performance reached its maximum value due to the decrease of air volume fraction and the increase of jet length and air bubble dispersion.
