A mathematical model for a three phase fluidized bed bioreactor (TFBBR) was proposed to describe oxygen utilization rate, biomass concentration and the removal efficiency of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in wastewater treatment. The model consisted of the biofilm model to describe the oxygen uptake rate and the hydraulic model to describe flow characteristics to cause the oxygen distribution in the reactor. The biofilm model represented the oxygen uptake rate by individual bioparticle and the hydrodynamics of fluids presented an axial dispersion flow with back mixing in the liquid phase and a plug flow in the gas phase. The difference of setting velocity along the column height due to the distributions of size and number of bioparticle was considered. The proposed model was able to predict the biomass concentration and the dissolved oxygen concentration along the column height. The removal efficiency of COD was calculated based on the oxygen consumption amounts that were obtained from the dissolved oxygen concentration. The predicted oxygen concentration by the proposed model agreed reasonably well with experimental measurement in a TFBBR. The effects of various operating parameters on the oxygen concentration were simulated based on the proposed model. The media size and media density affected the performance of a TFBBR. The dissolved oxygen concentration was significantly affected by the superficial liquid velocity but the removal efficiency of COD was significantly affected by the superficial gas velocity.

Liquid rocket propulsion is a system that produces required thrust for satellites and space launch vehicles by using chemical reactions of a liquid fuel and a liquid oxidizer. Monomethylhydrazine/dinitrogen tetroxide, liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen and RP-1/liquid oxygen are typical combinations of liquid propellants commonly used for the liquid rocket propulsion system. The objective of the present study is to investigate useful design and performance data of liquid rocket engine by conducting a numerical analysis of thermochemical reactions of liquid rocket propellants. For this, final products and chemical compositions of three liquid propellant combinations are calculated using equilibrium constants of major elementary equilibrium reactions when reactants remain in chemical equilibrium state after combustion process. In addition, flame temperature and specific impulse are estimated.
The most efficient method for reducing the organic content of dilute liquid waste is by aerobic-biological treatment. Basically, the organisms responsible for treatment possess the ability to decompose complex organic compounds and to use the energy so liberated for their bodily functions: reproduction, growth, locomotion and so on. That part of organic matter used to produce energy is converted to the essentially stable end products of carbon dioxide, water and ammonia, while the remainder is converted to new cells which can be settled and thus removed from the liquid before the waste is discharged to the receiving body water. Oxygen must be supplied continuously during the aerobic process. In the field of sewage treatment the Warburg respirometer is used mainly for the measurement of the oxygen uptake of samples. In this experiment the Warburg constant volume respirometer was used to determine the oxygen uptake by bacteria in the presence of various glucose concentrations. The rate of oxygen uptake by the bacteria was expressed as the respiratory quotient. The result indicated that the oxygen uptake was proportional to the glucose concentration. The expecting equation of the regression line was Y=7.7+0.12X where Y: respiratory quotient, ${\mu}l.\;O_2$ taken up/mg. dry wt. bacterium/hr. X: concentration of glucose, mg/l

Liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen rocket engines with highest specific impulse have been developed since the 1950s and used until now to maximize the capability of space launch vehicles. Domestic liquid hydrogen infrastructures for the production, transportation and distribution are being expanded at world-class level with the rise of hydrogen economy, which is a great opportunity for the performance enhancement for indigenous space launch vehicles. In this paper, feasibility of applying liquid hydrogen as a propellant is investigated in various aspects. The status of domestic liquid hydrogen infrastructure, the technologies required for liquid hydrogen engines, and operational aspects for safe handling of hydrogen are reviewed. In addition, test facilities for developing hydrogen engines are introduced briefly.
The use of dolomite refractories has increased during the past several years in the manufacturing of clean steel during the stainless steelmaking process. However, at the same time, the use of dolomite refractories has led to what is known as the skull formation. In the present work, to understand the skull formation, the wetting characteristics of dolomite substrates by liquid Fe-19wt%Cr-10wt%Ni alloys in various oxygen partial pressures were initially investigated at 1753K using the sessile drop technique. For comparison, the wetting characteristics of alumina substrates were investigated with the same technique. It was found that the wetting index, (1+$cos{\theta}$), of dolomite is approximately 40% higher compared to those of alumina. In addition, the oxygen partial pressure to generate the surface oxide, which may capture the liquid metal on the refractory surface, for dolomite is much lower than that for alumina. From this study, it was concluded that the use of dolomite is much more closely associated with the skull formation compared to the use of alumina due to the stronger wettability and the surface oxide formation at a lower oxygen partial pressure of dolomite.

Immobilized sensor spots were applied for online measurement of dissolved $O_2$, in test tubes. Oxygen transport was quantified at varied shaking frequency and filling volumes. The k$_{L}$ a increased with increasing shaking frequency and decreasing filling volume. In non-baffled tubes the maximum $k_{L}a$ value was $70h^{-1}$, equivalent to a maximum $O_2$ transfer capacity of 15mMh^{-1}$. Monitoring of the hydrodynamic profile revealed that the liquid bulk rotated inside the tube with an inclined liquid surface, whereby the angle between the surface and tube wall increased with increasing shaking frequency. The $k_{L}a$ clearly correlated to the surface area. Placement of four baffles into the tubes improved the oxygen transfer up to 3-fold. The highest increase in $k_{L}a$ was observed at high filling volume and high shaking frequency. The maximum $k_{L}a$ in baffled tubes was $100 h^{-1}$.
A series of computational analyses was performed to predict the cooling process by the cooling channel of preburners used for kerosene-liquid oxygen staged combustion cycle rocket engines. As an oxygen-rich combustion occurs in the kerosene fueled preburner, it is of great importance to control the wall temperature so that it does not exceed the critical temperature. However, since the heat transfer is proportional to the speed of fluid running inside the channel, the high heat transfer leads to a trade-off of pressure loss. For this reason, it is necessary to establish a certain criteria between the pressure loss and the heat transfer or the wall surface temperature. The design factors of the cooling channel were determined by the computational research, and a test model was manufactured. The test model was used for the hot fire tests to prove the function of the cooling mechanism, among other purposes.

The performance test of recirculation line in propellant feeding system was carried out. Liquid oxygen was used as cryogenic propellant and helium was used as recirculation promotion gas. Tests were done in cases at atmospheric pressure and at pressure of 4 barg in the ullage space of propellant tank. Liquid oxygen recirculation flowrate with helium injection flowrate and temperature distribution along the line were measured. There was appropriate helium injection flowrate for gas-lift recirculation system. Test data were used to make calculation program by test data correlation method. In this paper the procedure of calculation was presented and the results were compared to test data.

The ground oxidizer supply system in the launch site of NARO space center had operated 9 times from the start of tests with ILV on May, 2009 to the 2nd flight test of the NARO vehicle. This system operated successfully for twice launches of the NARO vehicle. To judge the successful operation of the ground facility, it should have reproducibility and reliability. In this report, we have analyzed the liquid oxygen consumption of the system to judge of its reproducibility and it can be a reference for using this system for the next generation of KSLV system.
