  • Through this study, we have attempted the thermodynamic analysis on the dimethyl ether (DME) separation process, which can be used for diesel alternative fuel, additive to LPG and natural gas. And we also have completed the simulation of DME separation process using PRO/II with PROVISION. As an appropriate thermodynamic models, we selected NRTL liquid activity coefficient model to describe the non-ideality between methanol and water. To estimate the vapor phase non-idealities, we have chosen the Peng-Robinson equation of state model. And we also use the Henry's law option to predict the solubilities of non-condensible gases like CO, $CO_2$, $H_2$, $CH_2$ and $N_2$ in methanol solvent. Case study showed that optimal solvent to feed molar ratio was 3.40

  • The applicability of the dipping, ultrasonic-assisted, heating methods to the extraction of useful components from Zostera marina was investigated. For the increase of the extraction yield of caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid from Zostera marina, ionic liquids and DES were used as additives in the extraction solvent. The optimum extraction conditions were found: dipping extraction, methanol as extraction solvent, 0.005 g of freeze-dried material powder, 5 mL methanol, 30 min and 0.5 g of DES-3 ($Et_4NCl$ and phenol) as additive. As a result, 0.19 mg/g of caffeic acid and 8.48 mg/g of rosmarinic acid were obtained. This method is simple and sensitive, and has been applied successfully to determine the component of caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid in Zostera marina and these results indicate that DES were used as additives is more suitable than traditional extraction for the extraction of useful components from Zostera marina.

  • High performance polysulfone microfiltration membranes with a high were successfully prepared by vapor induced phase separation (VIPS) coupled with non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. Asymmetric Membranes were prepared with PSF/DMF/PVP/PEG/DMSO/water mixed solutions and water/IPA coagulant. PSF, DMF, PVP, PEG, DMSO, water was used as a membrane polymer, a solvent, a hydrophilic polymer additive, a polar protic liquid polymer, a polar aprotic nonsolvent, and a polar protic nonsolvent in the casting solution, respectively. The addition of polar aprotic nonsolvents, and polar protic nonsolvents is a convenient and effective method to control membrane structure. In order to control the morphology of polymeric membranes, the spontaneous emulsification induced by drawing water vapor into the exposed casting solution surface has been used. Control of the internal morphology of polymeric membranes by using mixed coagulation solution such as water and IPA is discussed in the present work. The pure water permeability, pore size distribution, surface hydrophilicity and membrane morphology were investigated. Due to the addition of DMSO to casting solution, the mean pore size increased almost $0.2{\mu}m$ and the water flux increased about 1000-1800 LMH.

  • Effect of calcium sulfate and barium sulfate on the formation of portland cement clinker was studied by means of chemical analysis. DTA and X-ray diffraction analysis. In the presence of liquid phase, effect of the additives on the formation of tricalcium silicate was examined according to the reaction, 2CaO.$SiO_3$+CaO$\longrightarrow$3CaO.$SiO_3$, which is the principal reaction in portland cement clinkerization, and optimum conditions in firing clinker concerning amount of additive, firing time and temperature were determined, and its kinetics was referred to. The experimental results are summerized as follow: (1) Appropriate burning temperature range of cement clinker is more limited as the content of calcium sulfate in clinker is increased. Amount of calcium sulfate, firing time and temperature in proper condition of clinkerization is related to each others. Being added suitable quantity of calcium sulfate, firing temperature of clinker can be lowered about $100^{\circ}C$. (2) When 3-5 mole% of calcium sulfate is added, firing time of 15-30 minutes at about $1380^{\circ}C$ is reasonable, and if the content is over7 mole %, firing for 1 hr. or more at $1350^{\circ}C$ is anticipated to be optimum condition. (3) In the reaction of tricalcium silicate formation, the role of barium sulfate as a mineralizer is similar to that of calcium sulfate, but the optimum firing temperature of cement clinker containing barium sulfate tends to be 20-$30^{\circ}C$ higher than that of clinker containing calcium sulfate. (4) When barium sulfate is used as mineralizer, 2-3 mole % of it to tricalcium silicate is recommended and if it is added more than this amount, free CaO is increased rapidly in clinker and alite formation is inhibited.

  • We examined the effects of biological activity Phellinus linteus mycelium culture with cassiae semen extract. Firstly, the optimal temperature, initial pH and culture period for mycelial growth in a liquid culture of P. linteus were determined, and they were $30^{\circ}C$, pH 5.0 and 8 days respectively. The five herbal materials were examined against several health functional efficacies, and, as a result, Cassiae semen was chosen, with its superior inhibitory effects in ${\beta}$-glucuronidase inhibitory activity, electron donating activity, ACE inhibitory, and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activities(95.3%, 80.9%, 96.1 and 24.2%, respectively). P. linteus fruit body was investigated on ${\beta}$-glucuronidase inhibitory activity, electron donating activity, ACE inhibitory, and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activities, and they were 54.7%, 81.9%, 30.0% and 20.1%, respectively. Accordingly, C. semen was used in the following experiment, to give an additive functional effect on the P. linteus. As the amount of C. semen in the cultural media increased, mycelial weight and ${\beta}$-glucan contents also increased, but final pH was not influenced. In addition, the ${\beta}$-glucuronidase inhibitory activity, electron donating activity, and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity increased. P. linteus mycelium culture showed higher activities in the other three tests above, except for electron donating activity, when C. semen was added to the medium before cultivation.

  • Physical characteristics of a magneto-rheological(MR) fluid can be influenced by a magnetic field. MR fluid is a suspension of micrometer-sized magnetic particles in a base liquid such as oil. Therefore, the key issue is dispersion stability because density of micrometer-sized magnetic particles are different from that of oil. In the present study, dispersion stability and physical characteristics along chemical compositions of MR fluid are investigated. 216 kinds of MR fluids are made by using magnetic powder(#2), surfactant(#2), base oil(#2), functional additive(#3), density(#3) and viscosity(#3). From experimental results, SEM photograph, magnetic flux density, supernatant and sediment of 216 kinds of MR fluids are obtained.

  • In situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (ECAFM) observations of the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) was performed before and after cyclic voltammetry in lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) dissolved in 1-buthyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium (BDMI)-TFSI to understand the interfacial reactions between graphite and BDMI-based ionic liquids. The formation of blisters and the exfoliation of graphene layers by the intercalation of $BDMI^+$ cations within HOPG were observed instead of reversible lithium intercalation and de-intercalation. On the other hand, lithium ions are reversibly intercalated into the HOPG and de-intercalatied from the HOPG without intercalation of the $BDMI^+$ cations in the presence of 15 wt% of 4.90 mol/$kg^{-1}$ LiTFSI dissolved in propylene carbonate (PC). ECAFM results revealed that the concentrated PC-based solution is a very effective additive for preventing $BDMI^+$ intercalation through the formation of solid electrolyte interface (SEI).

  • Effects of sintering additives and sintering temperatures on the sintering behavior and mechanical properties of SiC whisker reinforced alumina composites have been investigated in this study. Dense (>95% TD) composites were obtained by using 2 wt% $Y_2O_3$ as liquid phase sintering additive. But only porous composite could be obtained when the sintering additives were MgO and $TiO_2$, which were known as the sintering additives for solid state sintering of alumina. Bending strength and fracture toughness were enhanced by reinforcement of SiC whisker. It is belived from the microstructure investigation that the enhanced by strength and toughness could be attribute to the reinforcing and grain growth inhibition effects of SiC whisker. After HIP treatment, fully dense composites were obtained and further enhanced mechanical properties achieved.

  • CMP(Chemical Mechanical Polishing) Processes have been used to improve the planarization of the wafers in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Polishing performance of CMP Process is determined by the chemical reaction of the liquid sol containing abrasive, pressure of the head portion and rotational speed of the polishing pad. However, frictional heat generated during the CMP process causes agglomeration of the particles and the liquidity degradation, resulting in a non-uniform of surface roughness and surface scratch. To overcome this chronic problem, herein, we introduced NaCl salt as an additive into silica sol for elimination the generation of frictional heat. The added NaCl reduced the zata potential of silica sol and increased the contact surface of silica particles onto the sapphire wafer, resulting in increase of the removal rate up to 17 %. Additionally, it seems that the silica particles adsorbed on the polishing pad decreased the contact area between the sapphire water and polishing pad, which suppressed the generation of frictional heat.

  • Hot red pepper(Capsicum annum L.) has been extensively used as a spicy food additive and preservative in Korea. In this study, we investigated the effect of dietary hot red pepper powder on humoral immune response in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups and fed experimental diets containing 0, 2, 5, 10% hot red pepper powder for 27 days. All groups were immunized with sheep red blood cells. In order to measure the immune response, plaque-forming cell number, agglutination titer, and serum antibody level were measured. Tissue ascorbic acid contents were also determined by high-performance liquid chromatogrphy. There was an increased plaque-forming cell number, agglutination titer, and serum IgG level in the groups supplemented with hot red pepper powder as compared to control. Tissure ascorbic acid contents in the hot pepper powder supplemented group were higher than those of control. The results suggest that the dietary hot red pepper powder enhances humoral immune response in rats, indicating that the hot pepper contains biological response modifier.
