  • Structural analyses of a engine system is required in development stage for increasing structural reliability and reducing weight. Attitude of a launch vehicle during flight is controlled by combustion chamber rotation varying with TVC (thrust vector control) actuator displacements. In this study nonlinear static analysis is performed for a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine using before and after the TVC actuation.

  • The system analysis and design program of the liquid rocket engine has been developed for preliminary conceptual design process. The program consists of modular programs analyzing the main thruster, the gas-generator, turbo-pumps, the turbine, pipes, valves and so on. Each module has been developed in order to estimate performance, weight, and shape parameters of the components. The results of them have been verified with experimental data or other programs.

In the article, on the basis of the experience of Russia and USA, the special features of experimental improvement on working capacity of LRE and the methods of its rational implementation formulated. The organizational and technical solutions of experimental improvement on working capacity of LRE for achieving the required level of the reliability and decreasing the material expenditures are presented in the article. These suggested solutions can be used for the development of LRE.

  • A design program has been developed to predict film cooling performance in a liquid rocket engine combustion chamber. A thermal protecting effect of low mixture ratio gas has been analysed by CFD. A one-dimensional film cooling model based on the CFD results has been implemented in the previously developed design program of regenerative cooling. The predicted heat flux at the nozzle throat ranges from -16% to +28% when it is compared to the published measured data. The throat heat flux reduces by 36% when film cooling of 10% of fuel mass flow rate is applied.

  • Combustion characteristics of a gas generator for a 30 ton-class liquid rocket engine were studied. At the early stage of development, the combustion tests of the gas generator were performed by only using the nozzle which substitute for a turbine manifold exit. Then, the extension tube was applied between the gas generator and the nozzle for imitating the resonant mode of gas generator and turbine manifold. Finally, the hot-firing tests were performed on the condition of connecting the gas generator with the turbine manifold. In the paper, the step-by-step results such as temperature distribution and pressure fluctuations were analyzed.

  • Hot-firing tests were performed on the gas generator which is a technology development/demonstration model for a 75 ton-class liquid rocket engine. A heat-sink type combustion chamber was used for initial performance examination of the injector and mixing head. This paper explains not only preparation works for hot-firing tests but also the acquired results such as pressure, temperature distribution, and pressure fluctuation.

  • A program that can simulate gas generator after burning liquid rocket engines was developed along with presenting the characteristics of the engines. The program was written in Matlab and used GUI interface so that many users can use it without any difficulties. The results of the program was compared with the real engine which was developed by the LRE advanced country. Most of the parameters concurred within 1% error expect for the pressure at the turbopump. The reasons of the large differences were supposed that pressure decreases at the schematics were smaller than that of the real engines.

  • The Properties of material, C18200 which is used for development of high performance liquid rocket engine combustor chamber were obtained by tension tests. The specimen for regenerative combustor was designed by structural analysis using that Properties. After the designed specimen was manufactured by the same manufacturing process of regenerative combustor. the yielding stress and yielding strain were obtained by strength tests. The properties of C18200 was degraded very much after brazing. The estimation of yielding pressure by structural analysis was almost same as that of strength test. The collector Part was yielded and failed previously than that of cooling channel part during strength test.

  • The KSLV-II(Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II) which being a successor of the KSLV-I is a space launch vehicle capable of delivering 1.5 ton-class satellite into a low earth orbit. The development of a 75 tonf-class liquid rocket engine(LRE) is planned on the basis of the technologies mastered through the preceded research of a 30 tonf-class LRE. The thrust chamber of the LRE is required to have higher combustion stability, structural integrity and thermal durability. This paper deals with the design requirements of the 75-tonf thrust chamber and a variety of technical considerations which have been conducted analytically in the course of the design for the realization of the requirements.
