  • General characteristics of hydrogen and the ratio change of the two forms of hydrogen(ortho-hydrogen and para-hydrogen) as a function of the temperature were introduced. The unique characteristics of hydrogen, such as a wide range of flammability limits, low minimum ignition energy, low maximum inverse temperature, and hydrogen embrittlement were introduced. The process of producing the liquid hydrogen using pre-cooling and expansion engine and ortho-para conversion using the catalyst were introduced. Finally, the characteristics and the considerations as a propellant for liquid rocket were reviewed.

  • In order to build a transient simulation program for a high thrust liquid rocket engine(LRE), a static performance simulation program for components were made. The components were the thrust chamber (combustion chamber and supersonic nozzle), centrifugal pump (impeller and volute casing), impulse turbine, and flow control devices (control valve and orifice). Simplified mathematical models based on classical thermodynamic and inviscid theories were used to remove complexity and enhance the utility of the program. We examined the results of each program qualitatively for validate each component modeling.

  • Life time and number of use of liquid propellant rocket engine (LRE) should be carefully defined since those are crucial parameters affecting development costs and period. The present study surveyed the development and qualification records of LRE for space launch vehicles, especially concerning about test numbers and duration. It was shown that a single engine for expendable launch vehicle is tested with tens of ignition and several times duration of flight at least.

  • In this study, a linearlized model of liquid rocket engine specifically for the gasgenerator cycle one was developed to serve as a basic control model. A commercial software Simulink was used for the modeling. Using this tool we studied the throttling characteristic of engine around its nominal mode. To obtain the effect of the throttle valve design on the engine's control characteristic, we included mathematical model of the control valve with driving motor and the pressure stabilizer which installed on the gas-generator fed line to sustain the mixture ratio of the gas-generator.

  • Hot test of a full-scale turbopump for a 30-ton-thrust liquid rocket engine was carried out. The turbopump is composed of an oxidizer pump, a fuel pump, and a turbine on a single shaft. Model fluid was used in the test, that is, hot air for the turbine and water for the pumps. The turbopump was operated stably at full speed for 120 seconds. In terms of performance characteristics of pumps and turbine, the results from the turbopump assembly test are compared with those from the turbopump component tests which were performed at about half of the design rotational speed.

  • Qualification test range for Lox/Kerosene gas generator cyle liquid rocket engine was determined by considering engine dispersion and flight inlet conditions. With various pump characteristics, the operation range of components and system was investigated through dispersion analysis. The variation of engine performance shows opposite trends in calibration and dispersion.

  • A test range for a 75tf class gas generator cycle liquid propellant rocket engine is defined. The engine system test range is defined by the performance variation during flight, the dispersion after engine calibration, and additional margin. The component development test range includes the operation range corresponding to the engine system test range and the component performance margin.

  • A computational analysis has been conducted on the compressible flow in the turbine exhaust nozzle of the gas generator cycle liquid rocket engine. The commercial CFD code Fluent has been used. Four nozzle designs have been compared to select the turbine exhaust nozzle concept. Three candidates with single nozzle have comparable performance. The model with bifurcated nozzles shows significant performance loss. However it will be better in the view of balanced thrust distribution because of its symmetric geometry.

  • The longitudinal instability (POGO) of the rocket should not be occurred during the whole flight time for the large class liquid propulsion system to complete a mission successfully. The longitudinal instability is caused by the resonance between the propulsion system and rocket structure in the low frequency range below 50Hz, ordinarily. Analysis on the low frequency dynamic characteristics on the liquid propulsion system with staged combustion cycle engine system was performed as a preliminary study on the longitudinal instability analysis.
