  • A rotating cryogenic system was designed similar to the cooling system for the rotor of a superconducting generator. The experimental rotor has an inner vessel which simulates the winding space of an actual superconducting rotor, and a torque tube of comparable design. This paper describes the evaluation of the total heat leak into the inner vessel that leads to the study of the heat transfer characteristic of the rotating cryogenic system. To examine the insulation performance of the experimental rotor. temperature was measured at each part of the system at various rotaing speeds from 0 rpm to 600 rpm. Total heat leak into the inner vessel was calculated by measuring the boil-off rate of liquid helium. Conduction heat leak to the inner vessel was obtained by the vent tube, and radiation heat leak was calculated by subtracting the conduction heat lent from the total heat leak. There seemed to be no rotaional dependency of total heat leak at least up 600 rpm.

  • The unique features of HTS offer opportunities and challenges to a number of applications. In this paper we focus on NMR and MRI magnets, illustrating them with the NMR/MRI magnets that we are currently and will shortly be engaged: a 1.3 GHz NMR magnet, an "annulus" magnet, and an $MgB_2$whole-body MRI magnet. The opportunities with HTS include: 1) high fields (e.g., 1.3 GHz magnet); 2) compactness (annulus magnet); and 3) enhanced stability despite liquid-helium-free operation ($MgB_2$whole-body MRI magnet). The challenges include: 1) a large screening current field detrimental to spatial field homogeneity (e.g., 1.3 GHz magnet); 2) uniformity of critical current density (annulus magnet); and 3) superconducting joints ($MgB_2$magnet).

  • Since the reports of CMR(colossal magnetoresistance) effects in some single crystal R-P phase $La_{1+x}Sr_{2-x}Mn_2O_7$, considerable researches have been carried out to find optimum composition and to understand the role of dimensionality in the CMR mechanism of this system. In this study, layered perovskite $Ln_xCa_{1-x}MnO_{4}$ (x=0.5, Ln=Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) phases were synthesized by solid state reaction and their structures were refined by Rietveld method. Electrical and magnetic properties were measured between room temperature and liquid helium temperature and compared with those of two dimensional $La_{1.4}Sr_{1.6}Mn_2O_7$ phase.

  • Bi-2223 HTS current leads for a superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES) magnet were designed and manufactured. The HTS leads composed of Bi-2223/AgAu tapes and stainless steel former were connected to conventional vapor-cooled copper leads. The heat input to the liquid helium through the HTS lead was 0.39 W/lead when the warm end part's temperature is 65 K. And, the critical current of the HTS leads was about 1.6 kA when the warm end part's temperature is 80 K. The measured those values are well consistent with computed values.

  • 1.5kA HTS current leads for a superconducting magnetic energy storage(SMES) magnet, which are connected to a conventional vapor cooled copper leads, were designed. The HTS lead composed of cylindrically arranged Bi-2223/Ag-1 at5Au tapes and a stainless steel tube. The minimum operating current of the lead is 1.71 kA at 77.3K, self magnetic field, and the heat input to the liquid helium from the clod end of the 36 cm lead is 0.5 W/lead.

  • The critical current of the HTS(High Temperature Superconductor) tape is governed by cooling temperature, magnetic field and its angle to HTS tape originated from its geometrical structure. At the HTS coil design stage, the critical current of the coil is calculated by considering the Ic-B characteristics of the 2G tape and the operating current is determined based on the critical current. The operating current and the structure of the 5 T coil are suggested through the FEM (Finite Elements Method) analysis and calculation. As a part of our on-going research on a 20 T LTS/HTS magnet, we have designed and constructed a 5 T HTS insert coil and tested it in liquid helium temperature.

  • To demonstrate the applicability of super-conductors to electric power machines, the authors made and tested a small single-phase superconducting transformer. The aim of the study was to determine the fundamental properties of superconducting trans former. Therefore the superconducting transformer has a simple structure, i.e. the high voltage to low one ratio is 2:1 and the iron core is immersed in liquid helium. Fundamental characteristics are obtained through no-load and short-circuit tests. In this paper, the experimental results are described.

  • A cycle analysis was performed for 2-stage expansion Claude refrigerators by a numerical method. The refrigerators are under recent development such that the reciprocating expanders of Collins cycle are replaced by new turboexpanders. A computer simulation program was written to predict the coefficient of performance of the refrigerators for several input parameters. It was found out that there exist unique optimum values for the ratio of expanded mass through the turboexpanders to the total mass and for the intermediate pressure of the 2-stage expansion. The maximum coefficient of performance was about $5{\times}10^{-4}$ at the optimal operation.

  • We have designed fabricated, and tested an RSFQ(Rapid Single Flux Quantum) 1-bit ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit). The 1-bit ALU was composed of a half adder and three SFQ DC switches. Three DC switches were attached to the two output ports of an ALU for the selection of each function from the available functions that were AND, OR, XOR and ADD. And we also attached two DC switches at the input ports of the half adder so that the input data were controlled using the function generators operating at low speed while we tested the circuit at high speed. The test bandwidth was from 1KHz to 5 ㎓. The chip was tested at the liquid helium temperature of 4.2 K.

  • We have designed and tested an RSFQ (Rapid Single Flux Quantum) NDRO (Non Destructive Read Out) circuit for the development of a high speed superconducting ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit). When designing the NDRO circuit, we used Julia, XIC and Lmeter for the circuit simulations and layouts. We obtained the simulation margins of larger than $\pm$25%. For the tests of NDRO operations, we attached the three DC/SFQ circuits and two SFQ/DC circuits to the NDRO circuit. In tests, we used an input frequency of 1 KHz to generate SFQ Pulses from DC/SFQ circuit. We measured the operation bias margin of NDRO to be $\pm$15%. The circuit was measured at the liquid helium temperature.
