Transpiration cooling is the most effective cooling technique for liquid rocket and air-breathing engines operating in aggressive environments with higher pressures and temperatures. Combustor liners and turbine vanes are cooled by the coolant(air or fuel) passing through their porous walls and also the exit coolant acting as an insulating film. However, its practical implementation has been hampered by the limitations of available porous materials. The search for more practical methods of increasing the internal heat transfer within the walls has led to the development of multi-laminate porous structures, such as Lamilloy$^{(R)}$ and Transply$^{(R)}$. This paper reviews recent research activities of transpiration cooling for the propulsions of liquid rocket, gas turbine, and scramjet.

The disintegration process of initial spray from high-pressure swirl injector was investigated at different injection pressures. The transient breakup phenomena that were difficult to observe at high injection pressure were easily observed at the low injection pressure of 0.4MPa. The effect of fuel remained inside a nozzle hole volume on the penetration of initial spray was also investigated. The disintegration process of initial spray could be classified four regions: the formation of mushroom shape, the first collision, the second collision, and the development of spray, The liquid film of cup shape was particularly found in the second collision region, and the growth ratio of its length and width at low and high injection pressures were compared.
Electrochemical studies on charge transfer reactions across the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) have greatly attracted researcher's attentions due to their wide applicability in research fields such as ion sensing and biosensing, modeling of biomembranes, pharmacokinetics, phase-transfer catalysis, fuel generation and solar energy conversion. In particular, there have been extensive efforts made on developing sensing platforms for ionic species and biomolecules via gelifying one of the liquid phases to improve mechanical stability in addition to creating microscale interfaces to reduce ohmic loss. In this review, we will mainly discuss on the basic principles, applications and future aspects of various sensing platforms utilizing ion transfer reactions across the ITIES. The ITIES is classified into four types : (i) a conventional liquid/liquid interface, (ii) a micropipette supported liquid/liquid interface, (iii) a single microhole or an array of microholes supported liquid/ liquid interface on a thin polymer film, and (iv) a microhole array liquid/liquid interface on a silicon membrane. Research efforts on developing ion selective sensors for water pollutants as well as biomolecule sensors will be highlighted based on the use of direct and assisted ion transfer reactions across these different ITIES configurations.

Transpiration cooling is the most effective cooling technique for the high-performance liquid rockets and air-breathing engines operating in aggressive environments with higher pressures and temperatures. When applying transpiration cooling, combustor liners and turbine blades/vanes are cooled by the coolant(air or fuel) passing through their porous walls and also the exit coolant acting as an insulating film. Practical implementation of the cooling technique has been hampered by the limitations of available porous materials. But advances in metal-joining techniques have led to the development of multi-laminate porous structures such as Lamilloy$^{(R)}$ fabricated from several diffusion-bonded, etched metal thin sheets. And also with the availability of lightweight, ceramic matrix composites(CMC), transpiration cooling now seems to be a promising technique for high-performance engine cooling. This paper reviews recent research activities of transpiration cooling and its applications to gas turbines, liquid rockets, and the engines for hypersonic vehicles.
An experimental study is presented for extinguishing characteristics of liquid fuel fire by water mist containing sodium acetate trihydrate. To evaluate the extinguishing performance of water mist containing an additive, the evaporation characteristics of a water droplet on a heated surface was examined. The evaporation process was recorded by a charge-coupled-device camera. Also, small-scale extinguishing tests were conducted for n-heptane pool fire in ventilated space to measure flame temperature variation. The average evaporation rate of a water droplet containing an additive was lower than that of a pure water droplet at a given surface temperature due to the precipitation of salt in the liquid-film and change of surface tension. In case of using an additive, the flame temperature was lower than that of pure water at a given discharge pressure and it was because the momentum of a water droplet containing an additive was increased reducing flame size. And also dissociated metal atoms, sodium, were reacted as a scavenger of the major radical species OH^-,\;H^+$ which were generated for combustion process. Moreover, at a high pressure of 4MPa, the fire was extinguished through blowing effect as well as primary extinguishing mechanisms.

In order to effectively reduce thermal loads on regenerative cooled walls, fuel cooling injectors and film cooling devices have often been employed. The present study has established a numerical methodology for prediction of performance and near-wall temperature distribution taking into account the nonuniform mixing due to these additional cooling devices. A correction procedure for main propulsive parameters has also been proposed based on comparison between prediction and experimental data. Under the computational framework of this study, the predicted results were in good agreement with hot-firing test data for a 30 tonf-class full-scale combustor at the design and off-design conditions. As a consequence, the present numerical method is expected to be useful for design and evaluation of regenerative cooled liquid rocket thrust chambers.

In this paper, anode supported SOFC with columnar structured YSZ electrolyte was fabricated via Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EBPVD) method. Liquid condensation process was employed for the preparation of NiO-YSZ substrate and the high power electron beam deposition method was used for the deposition of YSZ electrolyte film. Double layered cathode with LSM-YSZ and LSM was printed on electrolyte via screen-printing method and fired at $1150^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere for 3 h. The electrochemical performance and the long-term stability of $5{\times}5cm^2$ single cell were investigated with DC current-voltage characteristics and AC-impedance spectroscopy. According to the investigation, $5{\times}5cm^2$ sized unit cell showed the maximum power density of around $0.76W/cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ and maintained the stable performance over 400 h.
Novel Ni- and Fe-based alloys are developed to impart improved mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The designed alloys are manufactured as a powder and deposited on a steel substrate using a high-velocity oxygen-fuel process. The coating layer demonstrates good corrosion resistance, and the thus-formed passive film is beneficial because of the Cr contained in the alloy system. Furthermore, during low-temperature heat treatment, factors that deteriorate the properties and which may arise during high-temperature heat treatment, are avoided. For the heattreated coating layers, the hardness increases by up to 32% and the corrosion resistance improves. The influence of the heat treatment is investigated through various methods and is considered to enhance the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the coating layer.

Kerosene(Jet A-1), one of the propellants for each stage's engine of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), functions as coolant at the same time as it flows inside the cooling jacket of the combustion chambers and is injected through the film cooling holes. A physical surrogate mixture model to reproduce the thermophysical characteristics of Jet A-1 has been selected and the thermodynamic/transport properties of the model fuel under high pressure including supercritical conditions have been estimated using SUPERTRAPP(NIST SRD4). Comparisons with the measured properties suggest that proposed database can be used to extract properties of Jet A-1 for conjugate heat transfer analysis of liquid propellant rocket engine thrust chambers. Predicted combustion/cooling performance of regeneratively cooled thrust chambers shall be validated through comparisons with upcoming firing test results.

The increasing interest in light weight materials coupled to the need for cost -effective processing have combined to create a significant opportunity for aluminum P/M. particularly in the automotive industry in order to reduce fuel emissions and improve fuel economy at affordable prices. Additional potential markets for Al PIM parts include hand tools. Where moving parts against gravity represents a challenge; and office machinery, where reciprocating forces are important. Aluminum PIM adds light weight, high compressibility. low sintering temperatures. easy machinability and good corrosion resistance to all advantages of conventional iron bm;ed P/rv1. Current commercial alloys are pre-mixed of either the AI-Si-Mg or AL-Cu-Mg-Si type and contain 1.5% ethylene bis-stearamide as an internal lubricant. The powder is compacted in closed dies at pressure of 200-500Mpa and sintered in nitrogen at temperatures between $580~630^{\circ}C$ in continuous muffle furnace. For some applications no further processing is required. although most applications require one or more secondary operations such as sizing and finishing. These sccondary operations improve the dimension. properties or appearance of the finished part. Aluminum is often considered difficult to sinter because of the presence of a stable surface oxide film. Removal of the oxide in iron and copper based is usually achieved through the use of reducing atmospheres. such as hydrogen or dissociated ammonia. In aluminum. this occurs in the solid st,lte through the partial reduction of the aluminum by magncsium to form spinel. This exposcs the underlying metal and facilitates sintering. It has recently been shown that < 0.2% Mg is all that is required. It is noteworthy that most aluminum pre-mixes contain at least 0.5% Mg. The sintering of aluminum alloys can be further enhanced by selective microalloying. Just 100ppm pf tin chnnges the liquid phase sintering kinetics of the 2xxx alloys to produce a tensile strength of 375Mpa. an increilse of nearly 20% over the unmodified alloy. The ductility is unnffected. A similar but different effect occurs by the addition of 100 ppm of Pb to 7xxx alloys. The lend changes the wetting characteristics of the sintering liquid which serves to increase the tensile strength to 440 Mpa. a 40% increase over unmodified aIloys. Current research is predominantly aimed at the development of metal matrix composites. which have a high specific modulus. good wear resistance and a tailorable coefficient of thermal expnnsion. By controlling particle clustering and by engineering the ceramic/matrix interface in order to enhance sintering. very attractive properties can be achicved in the ns-sintered state. I\t an ils-sintered density ilpproaching 99%. these new experimental alloys hnve a modulus of 130 Gpa and an ultimate tensile strength of 212 Mpa in the T4 temper. In contest. unreinforcecl aluminum has a modulus of just 70 Gpa.
