  • Commercial liquid seeds are used for supplying active microbial flora to organic wastewater treatment plants of high feed-to-microorganism ratio and to maintain optimal microbial condition during unsteady state operation of the biological wastewater treatment plant. In addition to bacterial cells, the liquid weeds contain various additives for special purposes as well as organic substrates for energy supply. The additives give physical stability for the maintenance of microbial decomposition activity and ability to control the overgrowth of seed strains. In this work, the effects of addition of two kinds of typical substrate additives, poly aluminum chloride(PAC) and poly aluminum sulfate(PAS) on the consitutional total cell counts(CFU/ml) of four kinds of reorganization liquid seeds(RLS I, RLS II, RLS III and RLS IV) were studied experimentally. The addition of PAC and PAS gave negative effect on TCC constitution for the four seeds studied.

  • An experimental study was presented for extinguishing characteristics of liquid fuel fire by water mist($Dv_{0.99}{\leq}200{\mu}m$) containing potassium acetate and sodium acetate trihydrate. To evaluate the extinguishing performance of water mist containing additives, the evaporation characteristics of a water droplet on a heated surface was examined. The evaporation process was recorded by a charge-coupled-device camera. Also, small-scale extinguishing tests were conducted for n-heptane pool fire in ventilated space. During the experiments, flame temperatures were measured, and concentrations of oxygen and carbon monoxide were analyzed by a combustion gas analyzer. The average evaporation rate of water droplet containing additives was lower than that of pure water at a given surface temperature and decreased with the concentration increase due to the precipitation of salt in the liquid-film and change of surface tension. In case of using additives, the fire extinguishing times was shorter than that of pure water at a given discharge pressure and it was because the momentum of a water droplet containing additives was increased. And also dissociated metal atoms, potassium or sodium, were reacted as a scavenger of the major radical species OH, H which were generated for combustion process. Moreover, at a high pressure of 4 MPa, the fire was extinguished through blowing effect as well as primary extinguishing mechanisms.

  • Liquid paraffin is a mixture of heavier alkanes derived from petroleum. It can be used as a lubricant in processing machinery, as a coating agent, or as a releasing agent. The purpose of this study was to analyze liquid paraffins in foods by using a gas chromatography-flame ionized detector (GC-FID). Liquid paraffin was extracted from the food samples using n-hexane. Non-polar aromatic or olefinic co-extractives were removed by alkaline permanganate oxidation followed by clean up on an aluminium oxide SPE cartridge before the GC-FID analysis. The results of recovery tests were 91.5-103.2%. Based on this optimized method, we investigated the amount of liquid paraffin in various food samples purchased from domestic markets. The levels of liquid paraffin in bread were $95.5{\pm}156.0$ mg/kg (0.008%), those in capsules were $40.2{\pm}54.5$ mg/kg (0.001%), and those in dried fruits and vegetables were $3.0{\pm}18.1$ mg/kg (0.0001%). No liquid paraffin was detected in fresh fruits and vegetables. We propose that our method can be used to monitor and detect liquid paraffin in foods for food safety management.

  • A simple and efficient analytical method for the simultaneous determination of seven tar color additives was developed using ion pair high performance liquid chromatography. The conditions for HPLC analysis were as follows: column, ${\mu}$-Bondapak C18 (10 ${\mu}m$, 300 ${\times}$ 3.9 mm i.d.); gradient mobile phase, 0.025 mol/L ammonium acetate (containing 0.01 mol/L tetrabutylammonium bromide)-acetonitrile-methanol (65:25:10) as a mobile for fraction A and 0.025 mol/L ammonium acetate (containing 0.01 mol/L tetrabutylammonium bromide)-acetonitrilemethanol (40:50:10) as a mobile for fraction B; flow rate, 1.0 mL/ min; detection wavelength, 254/520/620 nm. We could attain to the detection limits as 0.01~0.05 ${\mu}$g/mL (254 nm) and 0.005~0.01 ${\mu}$g/mL (520 nm) for six red tar color additives, and 0.05 ${\mu}$g/mL (254 nm) and 0.002 ${\mu}$g/mL (620 nm) for Fast green FCF. This analytical method was applicable to determine the tar color additives contained in several commercial cold syrups.

  • Appropriate air quality in the pig building is essential to prevent farmers' health as well as to increase pig performance. This on-site experiment was conducted to assess dust reduction efficiencies of several liquid additives with spaying method in the enclosed pig building. The mean reduction rate of total dust only after spray was approximately 30% for all the treatments compared to initial level before spraying additives, which was found to reduce the initial level of total dust significantly (p<0.05). The mean reduction rate of all the treatments at 1hr after spray was about 24% which was 6% lower than only after spray. Since 3hr after spray, however, total dust level were fluctuated variably for all the treatments besides application of the soybean oil. Based on this result, effect of soybean oil on dust reduction in the enclosed pig building was most prominent among liquid additives evaluated in terms of efficiency and duration.

  • This study reports on the influence of N-butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium tetrafluoroborate ($PYR_{14}BF_4$) ionic liquid additive on the conducting and interfacial properties of organic solvent based electrolytes against a carbon electrode. We used the mixture of ethylene carbonate/dimethoxyethane (1:1) as an organic solvent electrolyte and tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate ($TEABF_4$) as a common salt. Using the $PYR_{14}BF$ ionic liquid as additive produced higher ionic conductivity in the electrolyte and lower interface resistance between carbon and electrolyte, resulting in improved capacitance. The chemical and electrochemical stability of the electrolyte was measured by ionic conductivity meter and linear sweep voltammetry. The electrochemical analysis between electrolyte and carbon electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

  • This study examined the effects of liquid and solid additives on the morphological, mechanical and thermal insulating properties of rigid polyurethane foams (PUFs). The PUFs synthesized with tetramethylsilane (TEMS) as a liquid-type additive showed a smaller average cell size and lower thermal conductivity than those with the aerosil 200 and clay 30B as solid-type additives. When TEMS was added, the average cell size of the PUF became more uniform and finer due to the reduced surface tension of the polymer solution, which increased the nucleation rate and number of bubbles produced and reduced cell size. The PUFs with TEMS showed the highest closed cell contents among the PUFs prepared using TEMS, aerosil 200 and clay 30B. This suggests that the insulation properties of PUF can be determined by both the size of the cell structure and the amount of closed cell contents in the system. The compression and flexural strengths of the PUF increased slightly when the aerosil 200, clay 30B and TEMS were added compared those of the neat PUF. The reaction profiles of the PUFs showed a similar gel and tack tree time with the reaction time among the PUFs synthesized with three different additives and neat PUF. This suggests that the nucleating additives used in this study do not affect the bubble growth of the chemical reaction, and the additives may act as nucleating agents during the formation of PUF. From the above results of the cell size, thermal conductivity, closed cell contents and reaction profile of the PUFs, liquid-type nucleating agent, such as TEMS, is more effective in decreasing the thermal conductivity of the PUF than solid-type nucleating agent, such as aerosil 200 and clay 30B.
