Feeding habits of juvenile Liparis tanakai collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay were studied. L. tanakai (2.0-6.0 cm SL) was a carnivore which consumed mainly amphipods (caprellids and gammarids) and caridean shrimps. Its diets also included a large amount of copepods, polychaetes and small fishes. Three distinct ontogenetic feeding groups were noted: (1) the individuals of 2.0-2.5 cm SL preyed heavily on copepods, (2) individuals of 2.5-4.0 cm SL fed mainly on amphipods. (3) individuals over 4.0 cm SL preyed mainly on caridean shrimps and small fishes. The dietary breadth of each size class showed relatively low value, and this means that juvenile L. tanakai depends on only few kinds of food organisms.

Stomach contents of snailfish, Liparis tanakai, caught in the Nakdong River Estuary were examined quantitatively. Liparis tanakai was a bottom feeding carnivores, and showed an almost strict specialization on shrimps and fishes. Shrimps and fishes accounted for 74.3% and 19.8% of the overall stomach contents, respectively. The most selected prey species was Cragon affinis for all fish size classes. The snailfish' s diets included minor quantities of crabs, amphipods, mysids and isopods. Small individuals(4~10 cm SL) consumed mainly shrimps which accounted for approximately 90% of the stomach contents. However, the portion of the diet attributable to shrimps decreased steadily with increasing fish size, and this decrease was paralleled by increased cosumption of fishes. For 31~45 cm individuals, fishes constituted over 30% of the stomach contents, while shrimps made up approximately 60% of the diet.

Fish assemblage structure in a sheltered shallow water in the Southern Coast of Korea was examined monthly. Sampling was conducted in Doam Bay using a beam trawl between March 2001 and February 2001. A total of 53 fish species from 33 families were caught. Pinkgray goby (Chaeturichthys hexanema), ponyfish (Leiognathus nuchalis) and yellowfin goby (Acanthogobius favimanus) were the most frequent species, comprised 67.4% of the total numbers captured. Snailfish (Liparis tanakai), yellowfin goby (Acanthogobius flavimanus) and pinkgray goby (Chaeturichthys hexanema) represented 50.8% of the total biomass. While total abundance (number of individuals) and biomass were high in autumn and winter, species richness (number of species) and diversity were high in spring. Cluster analysis, based on monthly abundance data of the 14 most frequent species, showed that the species were separated into three different groups. Group A composed of pinkgray goby, yellowfin goby, robust tonguefish (Cynoglossus robustus) and scaly hairfin anchovy (Setipinna taty), which were year-round residents, and devil flathead (Onigocia spinosa), Red dragonet (Repomucenus lunatus) and ponyfish, which were abundant in autumn, group B surmullet (Upeneus japonicus), hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) and gaff-topsail goby (Cryptocentrus filifer), which were abundant in summer, and group C grassfish (Liparis tanakai), spotted velvefish (Erisphex pottii), chameleon goby (Tridentiger trigonocephalus) and Richardson dragonet (Repomucenus richardsonii), which were abundant in winter and spring. A seasonal homogeneity of fish assemblage indicates that overall fish assemblage in Dom Bay is largely controlled by year-round residents.
Two protease inhibitors of 67 and 18 kDa, respectively, were purified from the eggs of glass fish, Liparis tanakai, by affinity chromatography and electro-elution method. The high molecular weight (HMW) protein was purified with a specific inhibitory activity, yield, and purity of 18.46 U/mg, 0.07%, and 131.86 fold, respectively, and was further characterized: Optimal temperature and pH for inhibitory activity of the HMW glassfish egg protease inhibitor were $40^{\circ}C$ and pH 6, respectively, and it was stable between $5^{\circ}C\;and\;50^{\circ}C$ in the pH range of 5-6 with maximal stability at pH 6. It was shown to be a competitive inhibitor against papain with an inhibition constant $(K_i)$ of 97.02 nM. Moreover, the 67 kDa protein inhibited cathepsin, a cysteine protease, more effectively than did an egg-white protease inhibitor. The HMW glassfish egg protease inhibitor was classified as a member of the family III (kininogen).
This paper deals with seasonal fluctuation of fish communities around the coast of Kunsan, Korea from 1992 to 1993. A total of 98 fish species with 82 genera, 47 families, and 14 orders were collected during the study. Among fishes caught by trawl net, Cynoglossus joyneri and Repomucenus ornatipinnis predominated throughout the year, and by long back net Harengula zunasi and Engraulis japonica except winter season. There is a difference between biomass caught by long back net and by trawl net, the former showing a peak in summer and the latter showing peaks in late spring and winter. This result appears to be due to the occurrences of Platycephalus indicus and Liparis tanakai for the spawning in investigated areas. Among the 14 species collected in the intertidal zone, 13 species of the family Gobiidae were mostly found in the spawning season. These results may suggest that the coastal area of Kunsan provides a good spawning ground for the coastal fishes. It is considered that the seasonal fluctuation of the abundance and species composition in fishes in this area is mainly affected by the water temperature and the bottom habitats.
Species composition and seasonal variations in abundance of fishes in the Nakdong River estuary were investigated using an otter trawl seasonally from September 2001 to July 2002. These data were compared with those obtained before the construction of the estuary barrage in 1987. A total of 3,648 fishes that comprised 30 species in 21 families were collected. Acanthogobius flavimanus and Leiognathus nuchalis predominated, and they were responsible for $71.2\%\;and\;67.8\%$ in the number of individuals and biomass, respectively. The next abundant fish species were Platycephalus indicus and Liparis tanakai. Compared with data obtained before the construction of the estuary barrage in 1987, abundances of Acanthogobius flavimanus, Platycephajus indicus, Liparis tanakai, Tridentiger trigonocephalus and Lateolabrax japonicus increased, while those of Pholis fangi, Repomucenus valenciennei, Sardineila zunasi and Scomber japonicus decreased. These results seems to be related to change of sediment environment caused by irregular discharge of freshwater with variation of sea water movement in the Nakdong River estuary.
Fish fauna in the eastern Yellow Sea was determined using samples collected by an otter trawl from September 1999 to November 2001. The fish consisted of 97 species belonging to 80 genera and 50 families. The major taxa were the Perciformes (40 spp.), Pleuronectiformes (17 spp.), Scorpaeniformes (11 spp.) and Clupeiformes (10 spp.). Larimichthys polyactis, Engraulis japonicus, Liparis tanakai, Pampus echinogaster, Lophius lituron and Collichthys niveatus were predominated in abundance in the study area. The composition of the fish fauna has changed during the last three decades.

Changes of fish assemblage inhabiting around Dae Island in Gwangyang Bay, Korea were investigated using a small beam trawl monthly from March 2009 to February 2010. These data were compared with those obtained in previous studies(1990~1991 and 1995~1996) at our study sites. A total of 8,133 fish belonging to 74 species in 38 families were collected. Leiognathus nuchalis, Argyrosomus argentatus, Acentrogobius pellidebilis, Sillago japonica, Apogon lineatus, Thryssa hamiltoni, Repomucenus richardsonii, Pholis nebulosa, Pleuronichthys cornutus, Hexagrammos otakii, and Limanda yokohamae dominated, and these were responsible for 89.5% and 58.9% in the number of individuals and in biomass, respectively. These were primarily small species or early juveniles of larger species. Seasonal variation in both species composition and abundance was large: the peak number of fish species occurred in May and October 2009, whilst both number of individuals and biomass were the highest in May 2009. Fish numbers as well as biomass was lowest in January and February 2010. Seasonal changes in the abundance of fishes corresponded with temperature. Compared with the previous studies, the total number of individuals and biomass per unit area($m^2$) were higher, and the predominance of L. nuchalis occurred while abundances of Liparis tanakai were significant decreased. These results seemed to be change of species composition in fish assemblage which was due to variation of annual environmental characteristics in Gwangyang Bay.
Snailfish, Liparis tanakai (Gilbert et Burke) is widely distributed in the coastal waters of Korea and Japan. On December 21, 1985, fertilized eggs of the fish were collected from the coastal waters of Saryang-do island, Kyongsangnam-do, Korea, and the eggs were incubated and the larvae reared at a mean water temperature of $9.2^{\circ}C$ in the laboratory. The fertilized eggs of this species are demersal, adhesive and spherical in shape, measuring $1.68{\sim}1.78mm$ (mean 1.72mm, n=30) in diameter, containing about 20 oil globules. Hatching took place 21 days after blastula stage. During the incubation period water temperature fluctuated between $8.1^{\circ}C\;and\;11.8^{\circ}C$. The newly hatched larvae were $5.70{\sim}6.41mm$ (mean 6.10mm, n=30) in total length with $7{\sim}9$ (abdominal) and 36 (caudal) myomeres. Many melanophores were distributed on the large pectoral fin, yolk sac and peritoneum. Twelve days after hatching, the larvae attained $5.85{\sim}6.46mm$ in total length, and at this time the larvae absorbed the yolk almost completely. Melanophores appeared on the snout and the posterior part of head.
