  • This study proposes a modified extended cognitive reliability and error analysis method (CREAM) for achieving a more accurate human error probability (HEP) in advanced control rooms. The traditional approach lacks failure data and does not consider the common performance condition (CPC) weights in different cognitive functions. The modified extended CREAM decomposes tasks using a method that combines structured information analysis (SIA) and the extended CREAM. The modified extended CREAM performs the weight analysis of CPCs in different cognitive functions, and the weights include cognitive, correlative, and important weights. We used the extended CREAM to obtain the cognitive weight. We determined the correlative weights of the CPCs for different cognitive functions using the triangular fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (TF-DEMATEL), and evaluated the importance weight of CPCs based on the interval 2-tuple linguistic approach and ensured the value of the importance weight using the entropy method in the different cognitive functions. Finally, we obtained the comprehensive weights of the different cognitive functions and calculated the HEPs. The accuracy and sensitivity of the modified extended CREAM were compared with those of the basic CREAM. The results demonstrate that the modified extended CREAM calculates the HEP more effectively in advanced control rooms.

  • In recent years, construction projects have been forced to cope with lack of skilled labor and increasing hazard circumstance of human operations. A construction robotic system has been frequently accomplished as one alterative for overcoming these difficulties in increasing construction quality, enhancing productivity, and improving safety. However, while the complexity of such a system increases, there are few ways to carry out an assessment of the system. This paper introduces a knowledge-based multi-criteria decision-making process to assist decision makers in systematically evaluating an automated system for a given project and quantifying its system performance index. The model employs linguistic terms and fuzzy numbers in attempts to deal with the vagueness inherent in experts' or decision makers' subjective opinions, considering the contribution resulted from their knowledge on a decision problem. As an illustrative case, the system, called Robotic-based Construction Automation, for constructing steel erection of high-rise buildings was applied into this model. The results show the model's capacities and imply the application to other extended types of construction robotic systems.

  • This letter presents a prediction model for sentence-final intonations for Korean conversational-style text-to-speech systems in which we introduce the linguistic feature of 'modality' as a new parameter. Based on their function and meaning, we classify tonal forms in speech data into tone types meaningful for speech synthesis and use the result of this classification to build our prediction model using a tree structured classification algorithm. In order to show that modality is more effective for the prediction model than features such as sentence type or speech act, an experiment is performed on a test set of 970 utterances with a training set of 3,883 utterances. The results show that modality makes a higher contribution to the determination of sentence-final intonation than sentence type or speech act, and that prediction accuracy improves up to 25% when the feature of modality is introduced.

  • This study was designed to determine what components of spoken language have been relatively neglected in the teaching of listening comprehension in Korea and to suggest a model of listening process. Two types of tests were undertaken using spoken and written forms of English with secondary school teachers of English and college students. Findings: Hearing power has been generally neglected in the teaching of listening comprehension. Hearing power which can be thought as an active process is defined as an ability to transfer the sequence of discrete phonetic segments without word boundary into the sequence of words in phonemic representations by using both nonlinguistic factors and linguistic factors including perception rules based on phonetics and phonology. Vocabularies, hearing-speaking power, syntactic structures and idiomatic expressions are to be taught for spoken English. A model of listening process was suggested and discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the denotating of visual message and linguistic message in the advertisement of Jean-wear, and to identify the image type in the advertisement of Jean-wear. Content analysis was done using the advertisement of Jean-wear from several fashion magazines which were published from January, 1996 to August, 1997. The advertisement of Jean-wear reflects the reality using the photos, and is image appeal type, appeals to the model\`s lifestyle, the western value. And that mostly singles person was appeared in the advertisement means solitude in modern society.

  • A new method for Chinese word segmentation named Conditional F'||'&'||'BMM (Forward and Backward Maximal Matching) which incorporates both bigram statistics (ie., mutual infonllation and difference of t-test between Chinese characters) and linguistic rules for ambiguity resolution is proposed in this paper The key characteristics of this model are the use of: (i) statistics which can be automatically derived from any raw corpus, (ii) a rule base for disambiguation with consistency and controlled size to be built up in a systematic way.

  • This paper presents a novel fuzzy logic based control method for shunt active filters. Since the fuzzy sets are based on linguistic description, therefore they don't need to the mathematical model of the investigated systems. The proposed method is very suitable to nonlinear and time variant loads. The controller is robust, reliable and it has a smooth response. Also transient response of method is much better than the other classical methods. The simulation results confirm the suitable performance of the filter using this control method.

  • The flexible arm has considerable structural flexibility. Because of its flexibility, the dynamic nodel is very complex and difficult to get. In this paper, fuzzy logic controller(FLC) of the single-link flexible arm is proposed, for FLC does not require any mathematical model of the plant. Noncolocated control is used and the choice of linguistic variables are examined. The simulation results are presented to show the possibility of FLC for flexible arm.

  • In this paper, we review the conventional speaker verification algorithm and present the text-dependent speaker verification system for application over telephone lines and its result of experiments. We apply blind-segmentation algorithm which segments speech into sub-word unit without linguistic information to the speaker verification system for training speaker model effectively with limited enrollment data. And the World-mode] that is created from PBW DB for score normalization is used. The experiments are presented in implemented system using database, which were constructed to simulate field test, and are shown 3.3% EER.
