  • The problem of the optimization of fuzzy relational models for dealing with (non-fuzzy) numerical data is investigated. In this context, interfaces optimization assumes particular importance, becoming a determinant factor in what concerns the overall model performance. Considering this, several scenarios for building fuzzy relational models are presented. These are: (i) optimizing I/O interfaces in advance (independently from the linguistic part of the model); (ii) optimizing I/O interfaces in advance and allowing that their optimized parameters may change during the learning of the linguistic part of the model; (iii) build simultaneously both interfaces and the linguistic subsystem; and (iv) build simultaneously both linguistic subsystem and interfaces, now subject to semantic integrity constraints. As linguistic subsystems, both a basic type and an extended versions of fuzzy relation equations are exploited in each one of these scenarios. A comparative analysis of the differ nt approaches is summarized.

  • This study explored the relationship between post types and linguistic characteristics in marketer-generated content and social media engagement to find the optimized content to enhance social media engagement level. Post data of 23,588 marketer-generated content were collected from 50 states' destination marketing organization Facebook pages in the United States. The collected data were analyzed by employing social media analytics, linguistic analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, and discriminant analysis. The results showed that there are significant differences in both engagement indicators and linguistic scores among the three post types. Based on research findings, this research not only provided researchers with theoretical implications but also suggested practitioners the most effective content designs for travel destination marketing in Facebook.

  • The main objective of this paper is to probe the extent to which misinformation propagated through the different social media platforms contribute effectively in the process of directing, shaping and reshaping societal awareness of Saudis. In so doing, this paper attempts to delve into the relationship between linguistic misinformation and societal awareness, by exploring the perception of Saudis towards social media news, particularly misinformation and the extent to which this misinformation influences the social attitudes of Saudis in terms of various societal issues. Two main research questions are addressed in this study. First, to what extent does social media misinformation affect Saudis' awareness? Second, what are the linguistic manifestations of misinformation presented in the different social platforms? Two main findings have been recorded in this study: first, misinformation significantly contributes to the societal awareness of Saudis; and, second, however misinformation is linguistically manifested at the different levels of linguistic analysis, it is highly representative at the lexicalization level of language use.

  • In this paper, we notice the fact that a human learning process is characterized by a process under a natural language environment, and discuss an approach of learning based on indirect linguistic instructions. An instruction is interpreted through some meaning elements and each trend. Fuzzy evaluation rule are constructed for the searched meaning elements of the given instruction, and the performance of a system to be learned is improved by the evaluation rules. In this paper, we propose a framework of learning based on indirect linguistic instruction based learning using fuzzy theory: FULLINS(FUzzy-Learning based on Linguistic IN-Struction). The validity of FULLINS is shown by applying it to helicopter flight control.

  • Usually risk assessment is performed for the safety of diverse industries though, many kinds of risks cannot be analyzed effectively by using classical probability models due to lack of experience data and impreciseness of human decision making. For these reasons, fuzzy risk assessment utilizing subjective judgment and experience of skillful experts has been considered as a solution. In this study, to comprehend the relationship between conventional fuzzy theory and human conceptual images on risks, linguistic variables were reviewed with reference to fuzzy membership functions, especially in the Korean language. As interviewees, about a hundred people including students as well as safety engineers voluntarily participated. The research results showed that most people were in favor of adjective expressions decorated with adverbs rather than naive expressions such as "high" or "low", and that directly translated linguistic variables were not appropriate for the Korean people in risk assessment as far. Therefore, with consideration of the selection tendency by the Korean people in linguistic variables, it could be concluded that 5 level expressions would be most favorable for linguistic variables in risk assessments in Korea.

  • A linguistic case-based fuzzy reasoning (LCBFR) based on standardized parametric membership functions (SPMF) is proposed. It provides an efficient mechanism for a fuzzy reasoning within linear time complexity. Thus, it can be used to improve the speed of fuzzy reasoning. In the process of LCBFR, linguistic case indexing and retrieval based on SPMF is suggested. It can be processed relatively fast compared to the previous linguistic approximation methods. From the engineering viewpoint, it may be a valuable advantage.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare socio-linguistic characteristics and instructional influences of two different types of texts, which were narrative and expository. Socio-linguistic characteristics of two different types of texts were analyzed in their content specialization, linguistic formality, and social-pedagogic relationships. Expository texts showed strong scientific classification, and medium level of linguistic formality, and low level of social-pedagogic relationships. Narrative texts showed different characteristics. The instructional effects were investigated with 91 fifth grade elementary students in three classes. Each class was randomly assigned into three groups: expository text group, narrative text group, control group. The results showed that the science achievement scores of the narrative text group was higher than those of other groups. The affective domain test scores of the expository text group were higher than other groups. The perception of students on informational science text were generally positive both types of texts.

  • In this paper I have considered the subject related with 'the identity of Korean linguistics.' When I have pondered upon the subject I found that all the researches should not be regarded as a part of Korean linguistics only because they followed the scientific methodology. Moreover, it isn't right to accept any of the studies of Korean linguistics only because they relied on the tenet of western linguistic methodology. Although till 1960's various western linguistic methods were introduced to Korean scholars and applied to account for Korean language, abruptly, since 1970's, most theories have inclined to follow tendency of American linguistic trend. Pupils who want to study modem linguistic theories prefer to study at the universities of America rather than other countries in Europe. However, it is necessary to blow that the history of American linguistics isn't really as long as that of European nations and that the humanities has developed fur a long time since the Greek period. If we attempt to contemplate the procedure of the invention of Korean alphabetic system (Hun-Min-Jung-Um) it will be easy to find the fact that the theoretic approaches used to observe and analyze Korean language in 15th century are as good as the most up-to-date theories which have been introduced recently. Therefore, I tried to show that the historical awareness of linguistic theories deserves special emphasis in order to understand the reality of Korean linguistics correctly.

  • Various linguistic knowledge resources are required in order that machine can understand diverse variation in natural languages. This paper aims to devise an automatic construction method of linguistic resources by reflecting characteristics of online contents toward continuous expansion. Especially we focused to build NE(Named-Entity) dictionary because the applicability of NEs is very high in linguistic analysis processes. Based on the investigation on Korean Wikipedia, we suggested an efficient construction method of NE dictionary using the syntactic patterns and structural features such as metadatas.

  • This article presents an examination of the major cognitive-semantic theories in linguistics (Langacker, Lakoff, Fillmore, Croft). The CST's foundations are discussed concerning the educational policy changes, which are necessary to improve the linguistic disciplines in the changing context of higher education, as well as the empowerment and development of the industry. It is relevant in the light of the linguistic specialists' quality training and the development of effective methods of language learning. Consideration of the theories content, tools, and methods of language teaching, which are an important component of quality teaching and the formation of a set of knowledge and skills of students of linguistic specialties, remains crucial. This study aims to establish the main theoretical positions and directions of cognitive-semantic theory in linguistics, determine the usefulness of teaching the basics of cognitive linguistics, the feasibility of using methods of cognitive-semantic nature in the learning process. During the research, the methods of linguistic description and observation, analysis, and synthesis were applied. The result of the study is to establish the need to study basic linguistic theories, as well as general theoretical precepts of cognitive linguistics, which remains one of the effective directions in the postmodern mainstream. It also clarifies the place of the main cognitive-semantic theories in the teaching linguistics' practice of the XXI century.
