  • The bilinear formulation proposed earlier by Peters and Izadpanah to develop finite elements in time to solve undamped linear systems, Is extended (and found to be readily amenable) to develop time finite elements to obtain transient responses of both linear and nonlinear, and damped and undamped systems. The formulation Is used in the h-, p- and hp-versions. The resulting linear and nonlinear algebraic equations are differentiated to obtain the first- and second-order sensitivities of the transient response with respect to various system parameters. The present developments were tested on a series of linear and nonlinear examples and were found to yield, when compared with results obtained using other methods, excellent results for both the transient response and Its sensitivity to system parameters. Mostly. the results were obtained using the Legendre polynomials as basis functions, though. in some cases other orthogonal polynomials namely. the Hermite. the Chebyshev, and integrated Legendre polynomials were also employed (but to no great advantage). A key advantage of the time finite element method, and the one often overlooked in its past applications, is the ease In which the sensitivity of the transient response with respect to various system parameters can be obtained. The results of sensitivity analysis can be used for approximate schemes for efficient solution of design optimization problems. Also. the results can be applied to gradient-based parameter identification schemes.

  • In this Study, the dynamic equation for vibration analysis of mechanical systems with kinematic constraints is derived. This equations are derived in terms of small displacements of Cartesian coordinates, and are applied to compute the dynamic response and the natural modes of the suspension system of a vehicle. The results are validated through the comparison with the results from conventional nonlinear dynamic analysis and modal test.

  • In this paper, we first consider the existence and regularity of solutions of the semilinear control system under natural assumptions such as the local Lipschtiz continuity of nonlinear term. Thereafter, we will also establish the approximate controllability for the equation when the corresponding linear system is approximately controllable.

  • In this paper, the concept of persistent excitation(PE) is examed and the model reference adaptive control of a linear plant subjected to bounded disturbances is considered. Computer simulation reasults of nonlinear differential equations shows that the global behavior of the adaptive system depends upon the PE of the reference input as well as the amplitude of the external disturbances. The sufficient conditions on the PE of the reference input for the signals in the adaptive system to be globally bounded has been derived.

  • In this paper a method for simultaneous swift non-linear analysis and optimal design/posture of mechanical/biomechanical systems is presented. The method is developed to get advantages of iterations in non-linear analysis and/or generations in genetic algorithm (GA) for the purpose of efficient analysis within the optimal design/posture. The method is applicable for both size and geometry optimizations wherein material and geometry non-linearity are present. In addition to established mechanical systems, the method can solve biomechanical models of human musculoskeletal system. Optimization-based procedures are popular methods for resolving the redundancy at joints wherein the number of unknown muscle forces is far more than the number of equilibrium equations. These procedures involve optimization of a cost function(s) which is assumed to be consistent with the central nervous system's strategy when activating muscles to assure equilibrium. However, because of the complexity of biomechanical problems (i.e., due to non-linear biomaterial, large deformation, redundancy of the problem and so on) efficient analysis are required within optimization procedures as suggested in this paper.

  • Natural convection in agricultural-products storage system was analysed theoretically, The storage system was modelled by Internally heated fluid saturated porous layer. Darcy's law was used to explain characteristics of fluid motion. Stability equations were obtained under the linear stability theory and transfer characteristics were modelled by the shape assumption. Based on the modelling of transfer characteristics, heat trasnfer correlations were derived theoretically.

  • In this study, vibration analysis of fluid conveying microbeams under non-ideal boundary conditions (BCs) is performed. The objective of the present paper is to describe the effects of non-ideal BCs on linear vibrations of fluid conveying microbeams. Non-ideal BCs are modeled as a linear combination of ideal clamped and ideal simply supported boundary conditions by using the weighting factor (k). Non-ideal clamped and non-ideal simply supported beams are both considered to show the effects of BCs. Equations of motion of the beam under the effect of moving fluid are obtained by using Hamilton principle. Method of multiple scales which is one of the perturbation techniques is applied to the governing linear equation of motion. Approximate solutions of the linear equation are obtained and the effects of system parameters and non-ideal BCs on natural frequencies are presented. Results indicate that, natural frequencies of fluid conveying microbeam changed significantly by varying the weighting factor k. This change is more remarkable for clamped microbeams rather than simply supported ones.

  • We consider a model of HIV infection with various compartments, including target cells, infected cells, viral loads and immune effector cells, to describe HIV type 1 infection. We show that the proposed model has one uninfected steady state and several infected steady states and investigate their local stability by using a Jacobian matrix method. We obtain equations for adjoint variables and characterize an optimal control by applying Pontryagin's Maximum Principle in a linear control problem. In addition, we apply techniques and ideas from linear optimal control theory in conjunction with a direct search approach to derive on-off HIV therapy strategies. The results of numerical simulations indicate that hybrid on-off therapy protocols can move the model system to a "healthy" steady state in which the immune response is dominant in controlling HIV after the discontinuation of the therapy.

  • This paper studies on the design of an ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) looper control system for hot strip mills. The looper which is placed between each stand plays an important role in controlling strip width by regulating strip tension variation generated from the velocity difference of main work rolls. The mathematical model for looper is firstly obtained by Taylor's linearization of nonlinear differential equations, where it is given as a linear and time invariant state-space equation. Secondly, a looper servo controller is designed by ILQ control algorithm, which is an inverse problem of LQ(Linear Quadratic optimal control) control. By tunning control gain arbitration parameters and time constants, it is shown that the ILQ looper servo controller has the performance that makes well to follow desired trajectories of both strip tension and looper angle.

  • The Inverted Pendulum has been one of most popular nonlinear dynamic systems for the exploration of control techniques. This paper presents a new linear optimal control techniques and nonlinear neural network learning methods. The multiayered neural networks are used to add nonlinear effects on the linear optimal regulator(LQR). The new regulator can compensate nonlinear system uncertainties that are not considered in the LQR design, and can tolerated a wider range of uncertainties than the LQR alone. The new regulator has two neural networks for modeling and control. The neural network for modeling is used to obtain a more accurate model than the given mathematical equations. The neural network for control is used to overcome deficiencies by adding corrections to the linear coefficients of the LQR and by adding nonlinear effects on the LQR. Computer simulations are performed to show the applicability and a more robust regulator than the LQR alone.
