In this paper, geometrically non-linear finite element analyses were performed to study the mechanical behavior of the material system of the envelope of stratospheric airships. The microstructure of the loadbearing plain weave layer was identified and modeled. The Updated Lagrangian formulation was employed to consider the geometric non-linearity as well as the induced structural non-linearity for the fiber tows. The stress-strain behavior was predicted and the effective elastic modulus was calculated by numerical experiments. It was found the non-linear stress-strain curves were largely different from those by linear analysis with much higher non-linear elastic moduli. The difference was more distinguishable when the tow waviness was smaller.
The paper presents the analysis of two groups of piles subjected to lateral loads incorporating the non-linear behaviour of soil. The finite element method is adopted for carrying out the parametric study of the pile groups. The pile is idealized as a one dimensional beam element, the pile cap as two dimensional plate elements and the soil as non-linear elastic springs using the p-y curves developed by Georgiadis et al. (1992). Two groups of piles, embedded in a cohesive soil, involving two and three piles in series and parallel arrangement thereof are considered. The response of the pile groups is found to be significantly affected by the parameters such as the spacing between the piles, the number of piles in a group and the orientation of the lateral load. The non-linear response of the system is, further, compared with the one by Chore et al. (2012) obtained by the analysis of a system to the present one, except that the soil is assumed to be linear elastic. From the comparison, it is observed that the non-linearity of soil is found to increase the top displacement of the pile group in the range of 66.4%-145.6%, while decreasing the fixed moments in the range of 2% to 20% and the positive moments in the range of 54% to 57%.
Motivated by the dynamic output feedback passification results, point-to-point control laws for an elastic joint robot are presented when only the position measurements are available. The proposed method makes a parallel connection of the robot system and an input-dimensional linear system which obtains the effect of the desired differentiators. It is shown that the closed-loop nonlinear robot system can be rendered output strictly passive and the regulation of the system is achieved in the end. Robustness analysis is also given with regard to uncertainties on the robot parameters. Performance of the proposed control law is illustrated in the simulation studies of a manipulator with three revolute elastic joints.

In this paper, we introduce various coarse-grained elastic network modeling (ENM) techniques as a novel computational method for simulating atomic scale dynamics in macromolecules including DNA, RNA, protein, and polymer. In ENM, a system is modeled as a spring network among representative atoms in which each linear elastic spring is well designed to replace both bonded and nonbonded interactions among atoms in the sense of quantum mechanics. Based on this simplified system, a harmonic Hookean potential is defined and used for not only calculating intrinsic vibration modes of a given system, but also predicting its anharmonic conformational change, both of which are strongly related with its functional features. Various nano and bio applications of ENM such as fracture mechanics of nanocomposite and protein dynamics show that ENM is one of promising tools for simulating atomic scale dynamics in a more effective and efficient way comparing to the traditional molecular dynamics simulation.

In many industrial applicatiosns such as machine tools and automation equipments the control performance of the feed-drive systems as positioning devices of the tools and workpieces have great influences on the quality of related machines. For many electrically driven mechanical feed systems resilient couplings between motors and mechanical elements which mostly consist of elasttic shafts and gears often are unavoidable. Commonly these systems can be regarded as an elastic multi-mass systems can be regarded as an elastic multi-mass system which is dealt with this contribution. S high performance speed or position control can only be achieved with the considering of the mechanical elastic characteristics of the system. n this paper some practic characteristics of the system In this paper some practical information is given about experience in modeling design simulation and experiments for linear elastic multi-mass system,

The purpose of this study is to propose a pavement analysis system which considers dynamic effects resulted from the various vehicle speeds. Vehicle loading effects were estimated by loading frequency and dynamic loads under various vehicle speeds. In addition, a proposed analysis model takes the non-linear temperature using a predictive model for dynamic modulus in asphalt layer and the non-linear stress in the unbound material. To examine adequacy of existing multi-layer elastic analysis of non-linear temperature in asphalt layer and non-linear stress conditions in unbound material, this study divided layers of asphalt pavement structures with 10 layers in asphalt, 2 layers in subbase and 1 layer in subgrade. In order to verify the pavement analysis system that considers various speeds, deflections of pavement calculated using ABAQUS, a three dimensional finite element program, were compared with the results of field tests under various speeds.

Derivation procedures of exact elastic element stiffness matrix of thin-walled curved beams are rigorously presented for the static analysis. An exact elastic element stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform curved beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. First this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, the displacement functions of displacement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using member force-displacement relationships. The displacement and normal stress of the section are evaluated and compared with thin-walled straight and curved beam element or results of the analysis using shell elements for the thin-walled curved beam structure in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.

In recent years, mechanical systems such as high speed vehicles and railway trains moving on elastic beam structures have become a very important issue to consider. In this paper, a general approach, which can predict the dynamic behavior of a constrained mechanical system moving on a flexible beam structure, is proposed. Various supporting conditions for the foundation support are considered for the elastic beam structure. The elastic structure is assumed to be a non-uniform and linear Bernoulli-Euler beam with a proportional damping effect. Combined differential-algebraic equation of motion is derived using the multi-body dynamics theory and the finite element method. The proposed equations of motion can be solved numerically using the generalized coordinate partitioning method and predictor-corrector algorithm, which is an implicit multi-step integration method.

When ship claps against the ocean structure sited at shallow water, the time simulation of motion responses of dolphin-moored ocean structure is presented. The equatien of motion based on Cummin's theory of impulse responses are employed, and solved in time domain by using the Newmark $\beta$ method. The added mass and damping coefficients involved in the equations are obtained from a three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The impact forces due to ship collision are modeled as two method, and those are elastic and non-elastic collisions. The mooring forces for dolphin systems of scean structure are considered as linear spring system.
Static response of an elastic beam on a two-parameter tensionless foundation is investigated by assuming that the beam is symmetrically subjected to a uniformly distributed load and concentrated edge loads. Governing equations of the problem are obtained and solved by pointing out that a concentrated edge foundation reaction in addition to a continuous foundation reaction along the beam axis in the case of complete contact and a discontinuity in the foundation reactions in the case of partial contact come into being as a direct result of the two-parameter foundation model. The numerical solution of the complete contact problem is straightforward. However, it is shown that the problem displays a highly non-linear character when the beam lifts off from the foundation. Numerical treatment of the governing equations is accomplished by adopting an iterative process to establish the contact length. Results are presented in figures to demonstrate the linear and non-linear behavior of the beam-foundation system for various values of the parameters of the problem comparatively.
