  • The purpose of the article is to analyze the functioning of economic systems in the context of the development of their potential in a circular economy. It is determined that the functioning of economic systems to ensure their sustainability should meet modern challenges and provide for the formation of competitive institutional architecture, the introduction of structural and regulatory innovations, the transition to an innovative model of development. The specific principles of functioning of economic systems include openness, nonlinearity, multivectority, dynamism, emergence, uncertainty about the development of economic processes. It is substantiated that the linear nature of development and equilibrium are not dominant in the functioning of economic systems, and increasing the level of economic efficiency should go hand in hand with minimizing the activities of enterprises, which necessitates the use of circular economy. The main prerequisites for the transition to a circular economy are analyzed. It is determined that the basic concept of the circular economy involves the development of a system of production and consumption, which is based on processing, reuse, repair, product sharing, change of consumption patterns and new business models and systems. The main elements of the circular economy include: a closed cycle, the use of renewable energy sources, systems thinking. The correlation of the principles of sustainable development and the peculiarities of the application of the circular economy is analyzed. It is determined that the circular economy contrasts with the traditional linear economic model, which is based on the model of "take-do-consume-throw away". The advantages and disadvantages due to the use of the principles of circular economy are given. Based on the study, steps are identified to accelerate the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy.

  • This paper proposes a quasi-optimal linear DOA (Direction-of-Arrival) estimator which is necessary for the development of a real-time robot auditory system tracking moving acoustic source. It is well known that the use of conventional nonlinear filtering schemes may result in the severe performance degradation of DOA estimation and not be preferable for real-time implementation. These are mainly due to the inherent nonlinearity of the acoustic signal model used for DOA estimation. This motivates us to consider a new uncertain linear acoustic signal model based on the linear prediction relation of a noisy sinusoid. Using the suggested measurement model, it is shown that the resultant DOA estimation problem is cast into the NCRKF (Non-Conservative Robust Kalman Filtering) problem [12]. NCRKF-based DOA estimator provides reliable DOA estimates of a fast moving acoustic source in spite of using the noise-corrupted measurement matrix in the filter recursion and, as well, it is suitable for real-time implementation because of its linear recursive filter structure. The computational efficiency and DOA estimation performance of the proposed method are evaluated through the computer simulations.

  • In the development of linear perspective, Brook Taylor's theory has achieved a special position. With his method described in Linear Perspective(1715) and New Principles of Linear Perspective(1719), the subject of linear perspective became a generalized and abstract theory rather than a practical method for painters. He is known to be the first who used the term 'vanishing point'. Although a similar concept has been used form the early stage of Renaissance linear perspective, he developed a new method of British perspective technique of measure points based on the concept of 'vanishing points'. In the 15th and 16th century linear perspective, pictorial space is considered as independent space detached from the outer world. Albertian method of linear perspective is to construct a pavement on the picture in accordance with the centric point where the centric ray of the visual pyramid strikes the picture plane. Comparison to this traditional method, Taylor established the concent of a vanishing point (and a vanishing line), namely, the point (and the line) where a line (and a plane) through the eye point parallel to the considered line (and the plane) meets the picture plane. In the traditional situation like in Albertian method, the picture plane was assumed to be vertical and the center of the picture usually corresponded with the vanishing point. On the other hand, Taylor emphasized the role of vanishing points, and as a result, his method entered the domain of projective geometry rather than Euclidean geometry. For Taylor's theory was highly abstract and difficult to apply for the practitioners, there appeared many perspective treatises based on his theory in England since 1740s. Joshua Kirby's Dr. Brook Taylor's Method of Perspective Made Easy, Both in Theory and Practice(1754) was one of the most popular treatises among these posterior writings. As a well-known painter of the 18th century English society and perspective professor of the St. Martin's Lane Academy, Kirby tried to bridge the gap between the practice of the artists and the mathematical theory of Taylor. Trying to ease the common readers into Taylor's method, Kirby somehow abbreviated and even omitted several crucial parts of Taylor's ideas, especially concerning to the inverse problems of perspective projection. Taylor's theory and Kirby's handbook reveal us that the development of linear perspective in European society entered a transitional phase in the 18th century. In the European tradition, linear perspective means a representational system to indicated the three-dimensional nature of space and the image of objects on the two-dimensional surface, using the central projection method. However, Taylor and following scholars converted linear perspective as a complete mathematical and abstract theory. Such a development was also due to concern and interest of contemporary artists toward new visions of infinite space and kaleidoscopic phenomena of visual perception.

  • A method of design optimization for minimization of force ripple and maximization of thrust force in a linear brushless permanent magnet motor without finite element analysis is represented. The design optimization method calculated the driving force in the function of electric and geometric parameters of a linear brushless PM motor using the sequential quadratic programming method. Using electric and geometric parameters obtained by this method, the normalized force ripple is reduced 7.7% (9.7% to 2.0%) and the thrust force is increased 12.88N (111.55N to 124.43N) compared to those not using design optimization.

  • This paper proposes a new linear recursive target state estimator for automotive collision warning system. The target motion is modeled in Cartesian coordinate system while the radar measurements such as range, line-of-sight angle and range rate are obtained in polar coordinate system. To solve the problem by nonlinear relation between these two coordinate system, a practical linear filter design scheme employing the predicted line-of-sight Cartesian coordinate system (PLCCS) is proposed. Especially, PLCCS can effectively incorporate range rate measurements into target tracking system. It is known that the utilization of range rate measurements enables the improvement of target tracking performance. Moreover, PLCCS based target tracking system is implemented by linear recursive filter structure and hence is more suitable scheme for the development of reliable collision warning system. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by computer simulations.

  • Linear displacement accuracy is one of the most important factors that determine machine tool accuracy The laser interferometer has been usually recommended for the measurement of linear displacement accuracy. In this paper, microcomputer aided measurement and compensation system has been developed for the pitch error in a CNC machine tool. For accurate pitch error calculation. the analysis code for the pitch error has been also implemented according to the international standards (ISO). The PC based automatic compensation system for the pitch error is also implemented. A new algorithm for calculating optimum value for pitch error compensation is proposed, minimizing the deviation at each target points. The development system has been applied to a practical CNC maching center and the performance has been demonstrated.

  • Linear induction motor is adopted as an actuator of the planar stage. An inherently poor characteristic at zero or ultra-low speed zone of the induction motor is remarkably improved due to a recent development of power electronic semiconductor technology and a spatial vector control theory. At present, a servo response speed of the induction motor reaches 90 percent of one of PM synchronous or BLDC motor. Specially, as a secondary of the induction motor can be constructed using uniform conducting sheets, there is no periodic force ripple as in PM motors. So, the induction motor can be superior to another driving means under a certain condition. This paper discusses the overall development procedure of non-contact planar stage with a big workspace using linear induction motors.

  • The development of feed drive system with high speed and accuracy has been a major issue in the machine tool industry. Linear motors can be used as the efficient tool to achieve fast feed mechanism and high accuracy. However. a high speed feed drive system with linear motors can generate heat problems such as the variation of temperature distribution and the resultant thermal stress. In this paper, the important heat sources and the resultant thermal errors are presented. The thermal deformation characteristics of the machine tool with linear motors were identified, which are thermal expansion of linear scale, shrinkage, expansion and bending in the machine tool structure.
