A series of numerical experiments were carried out to simulate the rock cutting behavior by TBM disc cutter in a given took condition. AUTODYN-3D, a commercial program capable of simulating three-dimensional dynamic failure, was utilized to carry out the numerical tests over four different disc cutter spacing conditions. After modelling three-dimensional geometries of disc cutter and rock specimen, the linear cutting tests by a disc cutter were simulated for eight different types of rocks. The numerical result, that is the optimum cutter spacing for isotropic rocks had the good agreements with those from linear cutting test. However, for relatively anisotropic or jointed rocks, the specific energy obtained from the numerical tests was almost two-times bigger than the real linear cutting results. Therefore, to simulate cutting procedures for anisotropic rocks realistically, further studies would be necessary.

Linear cutting test is known to be very effective to determine machine parameters (i.e. thrust force and torque) and to estimate penetration rate of TBM and other operation conditions. Although the linear cutting test has significant advantages, the test is expensive and time-consuming because it requires large size specimen and high load capacity of the testing machine. Therefore, a few empirical prediction models (e.g. CSM, NTNU and QTBM) alternatively adopt laboratory index tests to estimate design parameters of TBM. This study discusses the estimation method of TBM machine parameters and disc cutter consumption using punch penetration test and Cerchar abrasion test of which the researches are rare. The cutter forces and cutter consumption can be estimated by the empirical models derived from the relationship between laboratory test result with field data and linear cutting test data. In addition, the estimation process was programmed through which the design parameters of TBM (e.g. thrust, torque, penetration rate, and cutter consumption) are automatically estimated using laboratory test results.

In this study, the cutter acting forces were measured by 3-directional load cell at two different skew angles and various S/d ratios during a series of linear cutting tests using a slim conical pick. The analysis for cutting performance were carried out after calculating average values of the measured results. The increase of penetration depth results in the decrease of specific energy. And the variations of the cutter acting forces depending on penetration depth in the case of 6 degree skew angle were smaller than in the case of 0 degree skew angle. From this results, 6 degree skew angle is more effective than 0 degree skew angle in designing optimal specifications of cutting head. In addition, $F_c/F_n$ under the setting of 6 degree skew angle was smaller than under the setting of 0 degree skew angle. However, it should be considered that the increase of cutter acting force in the cutting direction accompanied the increase of driving force in the case of the setting for 6 degree skew angle.
In this study, a diamond turning machine and a laser-assisted machining module were utilized for the complex combined cutting of aspheric shapes and fine patterns on the surface of high-hardness brittle material, silicon. The analysis of material's form accuracy and corrective machining was conducted based on key factors such as laser output, rotational speed, feed rate, and cutting depth to achieve form accuracy below 1 ㎛ and surface roughness below 0.1 ㎛. The cutting condition and corrective machining methods were investigated to achieve the desired form accuracy and surface roughness. The rotational speed of the spindle and the linear feed rate of the diamond turning machine were varied in five stages for the cutting condition test. Surface roughness and form accuracy were measured using both a contact surface profilometer and a non-contact surface profilometer. The experimental results revealed a tendency of improved surface roughness with increased rotational speed of the workpiece, and the best surface roughness and form accuracy were observed at a feed rate of 5 mm/min. Furthermore, based on the cutting condition experiments, corrective machining was performed. The experimental results demonstrated an improvement in form accuracy from 0.94 ㎛ to 0.31 ㎛ and a significant reduction in the average value of the surface roughness curve from 0.234 ㎛ to 0.061 ㎛. This research serves as a foundation for future studies focusing on the machinability in relation to laser output parameters.
In machining of ceramic materials, they are very difficult-to cut materials because of there high strength and hardness. Machining of ceramics are characterized by cracking and brittle fracture. Generally, ceramics are machined using conventional method such as grinding and polishing. However these processes are generally costly and have low MRR(material removal rate). This paper focuses on machinability evaluation of machinable ceramics for products with CNC machining center. Thus, in this paper, experiment applying cutting parameters is performed based on experimental design method. A design and analysis of experiments is conducted to study the effects of these parameters on the surface roughness by using the S/N ratio, analysis of ANOVA, and F-test. And multiple linear regression analysis is applied to compare experimental with predicted data in consideration of surface roughness. Cutting parameters, namely, feed, cutting speed and depth of cut are used to accomplish purpose of this paper. Required experiments are performed, and the results are investigated.

The characteristic equation for regenerative chatter loop including a delay element replaced by a rational function is presented by a linear differential-difference equation, accounting for the dynamics of the AMB controllers, the uncut chip thickness equation and the cutting process as well as the rigid spindle dynamics itself. The chatter stability analysis of a rigid milling spindle suspended by 5-axes active magnetic bearings(AMBs) is also performed to investigate the influences of the damping and stiffness coefficients of AMBs on the chatter free cutting conditions, as they are allowed to vary within the stable region formed by the AMB control gains. Several cutting tests varying the derivative gains of the AMB were performed to investigate the regenerative chatter vibrations, and it was concluded that the theoretical analysis results are in good consistency with the test results.

A new method for measuring the 3-axis cutting forces of a pick cutter by substituting costly 3-D load cells is proposed in this paper. The proposed cutting force measurement method is capable of estimating the 3-axis cutting forces through mechanical constraints using four single-axis compressive load cells and shoulder bolts. The feasibility of the proposed method was verified by finite element analysis, and the accuracy of the force measurement of the developed force measurement device was investigated by conducting linear rock cutting tests. The tests showed that the new cutting force measurement method is able to measure 3-axis cutting forces with a relative error of approximately 6%. These results imply that the new method could be a suitable alternative to conventional 3-D load cells. In addition, it will allow a significant reduction of approximately 20-30% in the costs required for measuring the cutting force when compared to conventional 3-D load cells.

This paper presents the design and test of elliptical vibration assisted cutting tool post. It is actuated by two piezoelectric actuators which are connected to the moving part through the elastic hinge with its role of imposing the preliminary pressures. These two actuators are located at right angles so that the resulting tool tip moves like a two-dimensional ellipse. Also, the tool post is activated within the region of linear actuation in order to overcome the distorted elliptical motion. For the precise measurement of the displacement of the tool tip, three-dimensional experimental apparatus was designed and the strokes of the tool post in major and minor axes were measured. The results show that the tool post can produce the variety of vibration locus from a circle with a radius of 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to an ellipse with a major axis, a =10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and a minor axis, b =2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$
Several alternative rock-cutting concepts, which are modified from the conventional ones, have been developed lately. Of the concepts, undercutting is one of the latest technologies. In this study, as a fundamental study on the undercutting technique, the rock-cutting mechanism and important parameters of the undercutting were introduced. This study built up cutting test system for evaluating the cutting performance of an actuated undercutting disc cutter (ADC), and carried out a series of cutting tests under different cutting parameters of ADC. The characteristics of cutter forces obtained from ADC rock-cutting tests were analyzed. The both average and peak values of the three directional cutter forces were linearly increased with the increases of linear velocity, penetration depth in vertical direction and eccentricity of ADC.

In this study, the LCM was applied as the preliminary study for the cutterhead design of TBM and the drilling performance evaluation. The optimum cutting condition is obtained from the LCM tests and the effects of the design factors of IBM cutterhead, such as penetration depth and cutter spacing, on drilling performance are estimated. In this study, hence, to predict the accurate performance of TBM, instead of one-dimensional penetration depth applied in existing studies, three-dimensional cutting volume was quantified and measured. For this, the digital photogrammetry technique was applied to the LCM tests. Also, AUTODYN 2D was applied to investigate the applicability of the numerical analysis technique to simulate the cutting process of rock by the TBM disc cutter.
