Finite element analysis (FEA) combined with the concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) provides a practical and convenient means to study the fracture and crack growth of materials. In this paper, a numerical modeling of crack propagation in the cement mantle of the reconstructed acetabulum is presented. This work is based on the implementation of the displacement extrapolation method (DEM) and the strain energy density (SED) theory in a finite element code. At each crack increment length, the kinking angle is evaluated as a function of stress intensity factors (SIFs). In this paper, we analyzed the mechanical behavior of cracks initiated in the cement mantle by evaluating the SIFs. The effect of the defect on the crack propagation path was highlighted.

In this paper, a four-layer road structure consisting of an edge transverse crack is simulated using three-dimensional finite element method in order to capture the influence of a single-axle wheel load on the crack propagation through the asphalt concrete layer. Different positions of the vehicular load relative to the cracked area are considered in the analyses. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is used for investigating the effect of the traffic load on the behavior of a crack propagating within the asphalt concrete. The results obtained show that the crack front experiences all three modes of deformation i.e., mode I, mode II and mode III, and the corresponding stress intensity factors are highly affected by the crack geometry and the vehicle position. The results also show that for many loading situations, the contribution of shear deformation (due to mode II and mode III loading) is considerable.
In this paper the failure mechanisms of polypropylene resin composites filled with calcium carbonate particulates have been studied in the temperature range $-50^{\circ}C$ to $-50^{\circ}C$ The fillers used are both untreated and surface treated with stearic acid. The impact fracture toughness is evaluated from the impact energy absorbed divided by the uncut ligament area of the specimen. Impact fracture toughness increases as temperature is raised whether the fillers are coated or not. The static fracture toughness of these particular composites is evaluated based on the linear clastic fracture toughness of these particular composites is evaluated based on the linear clastic fracture mechanics. Static fracture toughess decreases with increasing temperature whether the fillers are coated or not. An extended stress whitened zone are observed through a large number of availabel sites for cavitation/debonding along particle matrix interface and matrix deformation.

Structural integrity assessment of piping components is of paramount important for remaining life prediction, residual strength evaluation and for in-service inspection planning. For accurate prediction of these, a reliable fracture parameter is essential. One of the fracture parameters is stress intensity factor (SIF), which is generally preferred for high strength materials, can be evaluated by using linear elastic fracture mechanics principles. To employ available analytical and numerical procedures for fracture analysis of piping components, it takes considerable amount of time and effort. In view of this, an alternative approach to analytical and finite element analysis, a model based on relevance vector machine (RVM) is developed to predict SIF of part through crack of a piping component under fatigue loading. RVM is based on probabilistic approach and regression and it is established based on Bayesian formulation of a linear model with an appropriate prior that results in a sparse representation. Model for SIF prediction is developed by using MATLAB software wherein 70% of the data has been used for the development of RVM model and rest of the data is used for validation. The predicted SIF is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding analytical solution, and can be used for damage tolerant analysis of structural components.
The present paper deals with delamination fracture analyses of the multilayered functionally graded non-linear elastic Symmetric Split Beam (SSB) configurations. The material is functionally graded in both width and height directions in each layer. It is assumed that the material properties are distributed non-symmetrically with respect to the centroidal axes of the beam cross-section. Sine laws are used to describe the continuous variation of the material properties in the cross-sections of the layers. The delamination fracture is analyzed in terms of the strain energy release rate by considering the balance of the energy. A comparison with the J-integral is performed for verification. The solution derived is used for parametric analyses of the delamination fracture behavior of the multilayered functionally graded SSB in order to evaluate the effects of the sine gradients of the three material properties in the width and height directions of the layers and the location of the crack along the beam width on the strain energy release rate. The solution obtained is valid for two-dimensional functionally graded non-linear elastic SSB configurations which are made of an arbitrary number of lengthwise vertical layers. A delamination crack is located arbitrary between layers. Thus, the two crack arms have different widths. Besides, the layers have individual widths and material properties.
This paper treats the failure analysis of prestressing steel wires with different kinds of localised damage in the form of a surface defect (crack or notch) or as a mechanical action (transverse loads). From the microscopical point of view, the micromechanisms of fracture are shear dimples (associated with localised plasticity) in the case of the transverse loads and cleavage-like (related to a weakest-link fracture micromechanism) in the case of cracked wires. In the notched geometries the microscopic modes of fracture range from the ductile micro-void coalescence to the brittle cleavage, depending on the stress triaxiality in the vicinity of the notch tip. From the macroscopical point of view, fracture criteria are proposed as design criteria in damage tolerance analyses. The transverse load situation is solved by using an upper bound theorem of limit analysis in plasticity. The case of the cracked wire may be treated using fracture criteria in the framework of linear elastic fracture mechanics on the basis of a previous finite element computation of the stress intensity factor in the cracked cylinder. Notched geometries require the use of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics and numerical analysis of the stress-strain state at the failure situation. A fracture criterion is formulated on the basis of the critical value of the effective or equivalent stress in the Von Mises sense.
Analytical investigation of the fracture of inhomogeneous beam with two parallel lengthwise cracks is performed. The thickness of the beam varies continuously along the beam length. The beam is loaded in three-point bending. Two beam configurations with different lengths of the cracks are analyzed. The two cracks are located arbitrary along the thickness of the beam. Solutions to the strain energy release rate are derived assuming that the material has non-linear elastic mechanical behavior. Besides, the beam exhibits continuous material inhomogeneity along its thickness. The balance of the energy is analyzed in order to derive the strain energy release rate. Verifications of the solutions are carried-out by considering the complementary strain energy stored in the beam configurations. The influence of the continuous variation of the thickness along the beam length on the lengthwise fracture behavior is investigated. The dependence of the lengthwise fracture on the lengths of the two parallel cracks is also studied.
A linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis of double subsurface cracks propagation in a half-space subjected to moving thermomechanical surface traction was performed using the finite element method. The effect of frictional heat at the sliding surface on the crack growth behavior is analyzed in terms of the thermal load and peclet number. The crack propagation direction is predicted in light of the magnitudes of the maximum shear and tensile stress intensity factor ranges. When moving thermomechanical surface traction exists, subsurface horizontal cracks are propagation in-plane crack growth rate at the beginning but they are propagation out-of-plane crack growth rate by the frictional heat which is occurrence by the repeated sliding contact.
The p-version crack model based on integrals of Legendre polynomial and virtual crack extension method is proposed with its potential for application to stress intensity factor computations in linear elastic fracture mechanics. The main advantage of this model is that the data preparation effort is minimal because only a small number of elements are used and the high accuracy and the rapid rate of convergence can be achieved in the vicinity of crack tip. There are two important findings from this study. Firstly, the limit value, the strain energy of the exact solution can be estimated with successive three p-version approximations by ascertaining the approximations is entered the asymptotic range. Secondly, the rate of convergence of p-version model is almost twice that of h-version model on the basis of uniform or quasiuniform mesh refinement for the cracked panel problem subjected tension.
