  • A geometrically non-linear finite element formulation of spatial cable networks is presented using three cable elements. Firstly, derivation procedures of tangent stiffness and mass matrices for the space truss element and the elastic catenary cable element, and the isoparametric cable element are summarized. The load incremental method based on Newton-Raphson iteration method and the dynamic relaxation method are presented in order to determine the initial static state of cable nets subjected to self-weights and support motions. Furthermore, static non-linear analysis of cable structures under additional live loads are performed based on the initial configuration. Challenging example problems are presented and discussed in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the present finite element method and investigate static non-linear behaviors of cable nets.

  • The foundation for the theoretical establishment of the linear motor lies in the investigation of the magnetic flux distribution in its airgaps. Generally speaking, the linear motor is similar, in the principle of its operation, to the general induction motor. However, there are great differences in the aspects of its structure and characteristics, especially, in the fact that the formation of its travelling magnetic field depends on the method of its winding. This paper is written in order to introduce the method of calculating the air gap magnetic flux distribution on the basis of its ampere-conductor in the case that 2 phase winding is applied on its open magnetic circuit iron core, and to present the results of investigation of the pulsation in its travelling fields. the first and second example of winding show the case of travelling magnetic field with the constant amplitude except the end region. The third example deals with the configuration of coil-side displaced outside the core and which produce the increased flux density at the ends, but, on the contrary, forms the pulsated travelling field.

  • The non-linear behaviour of integral infilled frames (in which the infill and the frame are bonded together with help of various interface materials) is studied both experimentally and numerically. The experiments were carried out on one-sixth scale two-bay and three-storey reinforced concrete frames with and without infill against static cyclic loading. Three interface materials - cement mortar, cork and foam have been used in between the infill and the frame. The infill, interface and the frame are bonded together is called integral frame. The linear and non-linear behaviors of two dimensional bare frame and integral infilled frame have been studied numerically using the commercial finite element software SAP 2000. Linear finite element analysis has been carried out to quantify the effect of various interface materials on the infilled frames with various combinations of 21 cases and the results compared. The modified configuration that used all three interface materials offered better resistance above others. Therefore, the experiments were limited to this modified infilled frame case configuration, in addition to conventional (A1-integral infilled frame with cement mortar as interface) and bare frame (A0-No infill). The results have been compared with the numerical results done initially. It is found that stiffness of bare frame increased by infilling and the strength of modified frame increased by 20% compare to bare frame. The ductility ratio of modified infilled frame was 42% more than that of the conventional infilled frame. In general, the numerical result was found to be in good agreement with experimental results for initial crack load, ultimate load and deformed pattern of infill.

  • We investigate the effects of solutal convection on the crystal growth rate in a horizontal configuration for diffusive-convection conditions and purely diffusion conditions achievable in a low gravity environment for a nonlinear thermal gradient. It is concluded that the solutally-driven convection due to the disparity in the molecular weights of the component A $(Hg_2Br_2)$ and B (CO) is stronger than thermally-driven convection for both the nonlinear and the linear thermal profiles, corresponding to $Gr_t= 8.5{\times}10^3,\; Gr_s = 1.05{\times}10^5$. For both solutal and thermal convection processes, the growth rates for the linear thermal profile (conducting walls) are greater than for the nonlinear case. With the temperature humps, there are found to be observed in undersaturation for diffusive-convection processes ranging from $D_{AB}$ = 0.087 to 0.87. For the vertical configurations, the diffusion mode is so much dominated that the growth rate and interfacial distribution is nearly regardless of the gravitational accelerations. Also, the diffusion mode is predominant over the convection for the gravity levels less than 0.1 $g_0$ for the horizontally oriented configuration.

  • First appeared in the 1970s, the underground shopping mall has been spreading across the country, and there reportedly exist 77 malls in the 2010. After over 30 decades operation, many underground shopping malls are now under the planning phase for renovation in many cities. This study considers the renovation issue of the underground shopping mall in the perspective of spatial re-configuration. A case is taken from Kangnam TerminalUnderground Shopping Mall in Seoul for detailed observation and suggestion. The monotonous and confusingspatial layout of the existing mall is investigated by observation methods. Based on the observation, a modifiedplan is suggested and evaluated by means of computer simulation program, Depth Map. The program mainly deals with visual network analysis in order to quantify the optical exposure in a given space. It is argued in this paper that the enhanced visual connectedness could affect the pedestrian performance positively in the shopping mall, and this leads to an easy and quick access to each shops in users' stand point. It is thought that this configurational solution for the remodelling of a specific case would be an effective reference for other malls in the country which are facing the similar problems.

  • This paper was mainly concentrated On the structural analysis of the cable-stayed bridges through the linear and nonlinear analysis method. And also this compares and analyses the characteristics of the two typical system, the radiating and harp arrangement. As a result, The radiating configuration is stiffer than the harp configuration in many respects Besides, the difference between the linear and nonlinear analysis method is proportional to the sag. But as the cable of the cable-stayed bridges is tauter, the difference is lesser.

The optimal configuration of linear door system and the design results of linear LIM will be proposed in this paper and the validation of LIM design results will be investigated through the test. In this study, high performance of drive controller applied vector control and optimum drive pattern also are suggested. In addition, this paper describes details of designing and manufacturing process of linear door system and investigates the performance by analysis and test. The analytical and experimental results of this paper are considered as the productive data for the development of new elevator door system.

  • Cryogenic cooling system for HTS electric power devices requires a reliable and efficient high-capacity cryocooler. A Striling cryocooler with a linear compressor can be a good candidate. It has advantages of low vibration and long maintenance cycle compared with a kinematic-driven Stirling cryocooler. In this study, we developed dual-opposed linear compressor of 12 kW electric input power with two 6 kW linear motors. Electrical performance of fabricated linear compressor is verified by experimental measurement of thrust constant. The developed Stirling cryocooler has gamma-type configuration. Piston and displacer are supported with flexure spring. A slit-type heat exchanger is adopted for cold and warm-end, and the generated heat is rejected by cooling water. In cooling performance test, waveforms of voltage, current, displacement and pressure are obtained and their amplitude and phase difference are analysed. Moreover, temperatures of cooling water, housing and linear motor are recorded and electric power parameters of driving circuit are also obtained. The developed Stirling cryocooler reaches to 47.8 K within 23.4 min. with no-load. From heat load tests, it shows cooling capacity of 440 W at 78.1 K with 6.45 kW of electric input power and 19.4 of % Carnot COP.

  • The topological investigations regarding magnetic circuit geometry and winding form of the transverse flux machine have brought up a variety of constructable arrangements with different features for several types of application[1, 2]. Here with, a novel PM-exited linear motor with inner mover, based on the transverse flux configuration leads to a considerable increase in power density for moving part. In this study we designed PM-exited transverse flux linear motor for ropeless elevator, whose output power density is higher and weight is lighter than conventional linear synchronous motors. When the designed motor in this study is applied to ropeless elevator, it is possible to increase power density more than 400% comparing with PM exited linear synchronous motor. The result of this study can be utilized for ropeless elevator or gearless direct linear moving system with high output[3].
