  • In this study, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used to estimate the degree of rice polishing. As-threshed rice seeds were dehusked and polished for different times, and the resulting grains were analyzed using LIBS. Various atomic, ionic, and molecular emissions were identified in the LIBS spectra. Their correlation with the amount of polished-off matter was investigated. Na I and Rb I emission line intensities showed linear sensitivity in the widest range of polished-off-matter amount. Thus, univariate models based on those lines were developed to predict the weight percent of polished-off matter and showed 3-5 % accuracy performances. Partial least squares-regression (PLS-R) was also applied to develop a multivariate model using Si I, Mg I, Ca I, Na I, K I, and Rb I emission lines. It outperformed the univariate models in prediction accuracy (2 %). Our results suggest that LIBS can be a reliable tool for authenticating the degree of rice polishing, which is closed related to nutrition, shelf life, appearance, and commercial value of rice products.

  • A 12 week growth study was carried out to investigate the supplemental effects of dietary garlic powder (GP) on growth, feed utilization and whole body composition changes of fingerling sterlet sturgeon Acipenser ruthenus (averaging weight, 5.5 g). Following a 24-h fasting, 540 fish were randomly distributed to each of 18 tanks (30 fish/tank) under a semi-recirculation freshwater system. The GP of 0.5% (GP0.5), 1% (GP1), 1.5% (GP1.5), 2% (GP2) and 3% (GP3) was added to the control diet (GP0) containing 43% protein and 16% lipid. After the feeding trial, weight gain (WG) of fish fed GP1.5, GP2 and GP3 were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of fish fed GP0, GP0.5 and GP1. Feed efficiency and specific growth rate (SGR) showed a similar trend to WG. Protein efficiency ratio of fish fed GP1.5, GP2, and GP3 were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those of fish groups fed the other diets. A significant difference (p<0.05) was found in whole body composition (moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, ash, and fiber) of fish at the end of the experiment. Significantly higher (p<0.05) protein and lipid retention efficiencies (PRE and LRE) were also found in GP1.5, GP2, and GP3 groups. Broken-line regression model analysis and second order polynomial regression model analysis relation on the basis of SGR and WG indicated that the dietary optimal GP level could be greater than 1.77% and 1.79%, but less than 2.95% and 3.18% in fingerling sterlet sturgeon. The present study suggested that dietary GP for fingerling sterlet sturgeon could positively affect growth performance and protein retention.

  • The indiscriminate use of the fossil fuel has caused serious environmental pollutions such as the shortage of energy and global warming. Microalgae have being emphasized as $3^{rd}$ generation biomass which makes the carbon dioxide reduce effectively as well as produces the biofuel. Large scale production of microbial biomass by continuous culture is a quite challenging issue, because off-line optimization strategies of a microbial process utilizing a model-based scheme give rise to many difficult problems. In this paper, the static and simple control method which was able to be applied in time-variant growth environment and large scale of algae culture was studied. The significant disturbances in on-line measurement of cell density were reduced by Savitzky-Golay FIR smoothing filter. Dunaliella salina was cultivated continuously in a flat panel photobioreactor by the on-off control of the turbidostat process.

  • Background: Ginseng extracts and ginseng-fermented products are widely used as functional cosmetic ingredients for their whitening and antiwrinkle effects. Recently, increasing attention has been given to bioactive metabolites isolated from endophytic fungi. However, little is known about the bioactive metabolites of the fungi associated with Panax ginseng Meyer. Methods: An endophytic fungus, Penicillium sp. SNF123 was isolated from the root of P. ginseng, from which acremonidin E was purified. Acremonidin E was tested on melanin synthesis in the murine melanoma cell line B16F10, in the human melanoma cell line MNT-1, and in a pigmented 3D-human skin model, Melanoderm. Results: Acremonidin E reduced melanogenesis in α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-stimulated B16F10 cells with minimal cytotoxicity. qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated that acremonidin E downregulated melanogenic genes, including tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related protein 1 (TRP-1), while their enzymatic activities were unaffected. The antimelanogenic effects of acremonidin E were further confirmed in MNT-1 and a pigmented 3D human epidermal skin model, Melanoderm. Immunohistological examination of the Melanoderm further confirmed the regression of both melanin synthesis and melanocyte activation in the treated tissue. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that acremonidin E, a bioactive metabolite derived from a fungal endophyte of P. ginseng, can inhibit melanin synthesis by downregulating tyrosinase, illuminating the potential utility of microorganisms associated with P. ginseng for cosmetic ingredients.

  • Objective: Current quail production is configured as an economic activity in scale. Advancements in quail nutrition have been limited to areas such as breeding and, automation of facilities and ambience. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance responses, liver and oviduct morphometry, and liver histology of Japanese laying quails subjected to different levels of nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (MEn). Methods: A completely random design was used that consisted of nine levels of MEn, six replicates, and five hens per cage with a total of 270 quails. The experimental period lasted for 10 weeks. The variables of performance were subjected to analysis of variance and then regression analysis using the broken-line model. The morphometric and histological variables were subjected to multivariate exploratory techniques. Results: The MEn levels influenced the responses to zootechnical performance. The broken-line model estimated the maximum responses for feed intake, egg production, egg weight, and egg mass as 3,040, 2,820, 1,802, and 2,960 kcal of MEn per kg of diet, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that the occurrence of hepatic steatosis and increased levels of Kupffer cells were not related to MEn levels. Conclusion: The level of 2,960 kcal/kg of MEn meets performance variable requirements without compromising hepatic physiology.

  • This paper presents a motion planning algorithm of autonomous racing vehicles for mimicking the characteristics of a human driver. Time optimal maneuver of a race car has been actively studied as a major research area over the past decades. Although the time optimization problem yields a single time series solution of minimum time maneuver inputs for the vehicle, human drivers achieve similar lap times while taking various racing lines and velocity profiles. In order to model the characteristics of a specific driver and reproduce the motion, a stochastic motion planning framework based on kernelized motion primitive is introduced. The proposed framework imitates the behavior of the generated reference motion, which is based on a small number of human demonstration laps along the racetrack using Gaussian mixture model and Gaussian mixture regression. The mean and covariance of the racing line and velocity profile mimicking the driver are obtained by accumulating the outputs tested at equidistantly sampled input points. The results confirmed that the obtained lateral and longitudinal motion simulates the driver's driving characteristics, which are feasible for actual vehicle test environments.

  • Purpose : This study was designed to investigate normal domestic values for the diameter of the left main coronary artery (LCA), the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) and the right coronary artery (RCA). These data are necessary to define dilatation of coronary arteries in Kawasaki disease cases. Methods : Study subjects were 43 normal healthy children whose ages ranged from 3 months to 6 years. They children visited Konkuk University hospital for echocardiograph examination between March 2005 and November 2007. Measurements of coronary arterial diameters at each branch were done by off-line analyses of recorded images. Simple regression analysis of each the measurements were performed using the body size (body surface area, etc.) as the independent variable. Results : Body surface area was significantly related to the diameters of LCA ($r^2=0.20$, P=0.0038), of LAD ($r^2=0.41$, P<0.0001), and of RCA ($r^2=0.30$, P=0.0002). In the regression model, the estimates of the y-intercept were 1.703, 1.058, and 1.007; the estimates of the regression coefficient were 0.971, 1.175, and 1.177; and the estimates of the standard deviation were 0.315, 0.221, and 0.282 with respect to the three coronary arteries. Conclusion : A the linear regression model of the diameters of three coronary arteries adjusted for body surface area was produced. With these results, the Z-score calculation of the diameter of three coronary arteries, based on normal domestic data, will be possible.

  • Purpose: In order to reduce forklift industrial accidents, it is necessary to classify them into institutional, technical, and educational factors and conduct research on whether each factor affects disaster reduction. Method: Descriptive statistical analysis, validity analysis, reliability analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted using SPSS 18 program based on an offline questionnaire based on a 5-point Likert scale. Result: As a result of multiple regression analysis, it was found that institutional, technical, and educational factors, which are independent variables for disaster reduction, explain about 62.5% of the variance in disaster prevention, which is the dependent variable. The regression model verification was found to be statistically significant with F=118.775 and significance probability p<0.01. Conclusion: First, there is a need to prevent disasters by including electric forklifts weighing less than 3 tons in the inspection system. Second, there is a need to make it mandatory to install front and rear cameras and forklift line beams to prevent forklift collision disasters. Third, there is a need to conduct special training related to forklifts every year, and drivers and nearby workers need to be included in the special training for forklifts.
