  • Tapered roller bearings are widely used in equipment where high combined thrust and radial loads are experienced. A certain amount of tilting between the tapered rollers and the races always occurs because of bending moment load conditions and shaft deflection. It is now well understood that a coherent elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film separates the rollers and races. In spite of extensive study on EHL problems for over half a century, relatively few studies have focused on the finite line contacts problem. This study presents a complete numerical analysis of the effects of roller tilting on the EHL characteristics in a tapered roller bearing. We systematically analyze this highly nonlinear problem using finite differences with fully non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. Detailed EHL pressure distributions and film shapes are presented under moderate loads and material parameters. A very small roller tilting significantly affects the pressure distributions and film shapes near both ends of the roller. Moreover, the effect of tilting on the EHL characteristics at the small end is much greater than that at the large end. Therefore, in designing optimum profiles for tapered roller bearings, the profile radius should be larger at the small end.

Importance of Construction Sequence in Numerical Modeling for Underground Structure

  • When excavation under existing structure is planned for a new construction project, the underpinning method is one of the most applicable construction methods. This study introduces a new modified underpinning method which is applied to construct a new subway line in Seoul Metropolitan. The new subway line was designed to pass underneath the existing subway line. Existing subway line carries about 2 million passengers daily, which is 33% of total passengers using subway in Seoul, and is the only circulation line in Seoul. Subway trains are passing 540 times through this section in a day. By applying a new underpinning method, the subway box structure of line is exposed 54m in the air supported by bearing piles. The proposed method was carefully monitored using heavy instrumentation system during construction. This study proposed and verified the application of the modified underpinning method, which can reduce construction period by 1.5 times and the construction cost by 1.2 times comparing with conventional method. The importance of considering construction sequence is investigated and verified by analyzed data non-considering construction sequence. The unexpected heaving which can bring up a dangerous situation for train running stability were measured, so this study shows that the upward movement has to be analyzed in designing process. As the use of underground space increases, the proposed method can be a good example of underground development.

시뮬레이션을 이용한 작업자/복수기계 가동분석에 대한 사례연구 (A Case Study on the Analysis of Man/Multi-Machine System Using Simulation)

  • This paper deals with a case study of workload analysis of an operator in an automatic line for machining the race of ball bearing. Eleven machines and three hoppers are installed in the line which is operated by an operator. The elements of operation are separated into machine controlled elements, operator controlled elements and machine/operator controlled elements. In order to analyze the system, time and motion studies are used for gathering input data for the simulation model. The first objective of this study is to evaluate whether the workload of operator is reasonable or not. The second objective is to increase throughput by reducing tact time and the last one is to increase frequencies of inspection by reducing interval. Thus we suggest some ideas for improvement, and as a result, the throughput is improved about 9%. In spite of the increasing of throughput, the allowance of operator is also increased about 4%.

  • This paper presents the technology of condition diagnosis & life estimation on insulation system of the traction motor. In the non-destructive methods for diagnosis of coil insulation state, residual dielectric strength is estimated by the D-map which consist of the partial discharge quantity Q and average degradation degree $\Delta$. In the operating history of machine, the N-Y life estimation method is based on the stop-starting numbers and operating times with considering each degradation factor by the thermal, electrical and heat-cycle stress. With the on-line conditioning monitoring on the currents of traction motors, detecting the abnormal operating state due to bearing faults, stator or armature faults, eccentricity related faults and broken rotor bars can be performed.

Misalignment가 있는 유한한 선접촉 EHL 문제의 수치해석 (Numerical Analysis of Misaligned Finite Line Contacts EHL Problem)

  • The rollers of cylindrical roller bearing are axially profiled to relieve high edge stress concentration caused by mainly their finite length and by misalignment. In this paper, a numerical analysis is carried to study the EHL of misaligned (tilted) rollers with axially profiled ends. Using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method, the highly nonlinear EHL problems are systematically solved. Physically consistent solutions are obtained for moderate load, material parameters and very small misalignment. For different misalignment angles, contours and sectional plots of pressure and film shape near both edge regions are compared. The asymmetric pressure distributions and film shapes show that the EHL results of finite line contacts are highly dependent upon very small amounts of roller misalignment. Especially, the effect of misalignment on the EHL pressure distribution is much higher than the film shapes.

Design and Simulation of Meshing of New Type of Worm-Gear Drive with Localized Contacts

  • The design and simulation of meshing of a single enveloping worm-gear drive with modified surfaces is presented. Generally worm-gear is generated by the hob which is identical to the worm. This process guarantees the conjugation between the worm and the gear but results in a line contact at every instant which is very sensitive to misalignment. The localization of bearing contact is necessary to reduce the sensitivity of the worm-gear drive to misalignment. Practically this localization is achieved by application of an oversized worm type hob to cut the worm-gear. The oversized hob approach is very practical and effective to localize bearing contact but can not provide the conjugation between the worm and the modified worm-gear. This work proposes an analytical procedure to make the worm surface conjugate to the worm-gear which is cut by the oversized hob. The developed computer program allows the investigation of the influence of misalignment on the shift of the bearing contact and the determination of the transmission errors, the contact ratio and the principle curvatures. The developed approach has been applied for ZK type of single-enveloping worm-gear drives and the developed theory is illustrated with a numerical example.

활차식 자동장력조정장치 성능진단 및 유지보수 개선에 관한 연구 (A Study on Performance Diagnosis of the Pulley Type Automatic Tensioning Device and Improvement of Maintenance)

  • The automatic tensioning device of the catenary system constantly maintains the tension of the trolley wire by absorbing the variations due to the elasticity of the line caused by temperature variation. The tension plays an important role in affecting the electric motorcar operation directly. This paper suggests the methodology of the life cycle extension and the maintenance of the automatic tensioning device by means of performance diagnosis of the pulley type automatic tensioning device which has been commonly used for the electric railway system. Through conducting performance diagnosis and comparative test for the wornout pulley type automatic tensioning device by replacing the components such as the bearing and the bearing shaft without replacing all the assembly, the tensioning device is analyzed whether it is properly functioned. Provided that the maintenance regulation is reinforced so as to implement the bearing replacement through periodical precise inspection along with random check-up inspection which is now carried out by the operating organizations, it is ensured that the life cycle extension and the reduction of maintenance cost of the tensioning device could be achieved.

  • In order to secure accuracy and effectiveness of the electromagnetic compass as information sensor for ship's head up bearing with gyro compass, magnetic compass and electromagnetic compass on the sea and on the dock in land.The results obtained were as follows;1. Between the Northeast and the southsouthwest the deviation on ship's head up bearing on electromagnetic compass got easterly deviation with max. $53^{\cire}$on the East and between the Southwest and the Northnortheast westerly deviation with max. $34^{\cire}$ on the Northwest, of which values were not able to be corrected due to the angle excess of deviation adjustment.2. The varies of deviation seemed to have a tendency to increase easterly deviation on the Northeast and the East, easterly deviation after westerly deviation between the South and the Northwest, small one on the North and the Southeast.3. The varies of deviation of ship were larger than the one of around the dock, were extreme on the bow of forecastle deck and were stable on the ship's center line of compass deck at the dock in land.

  • The railroad roadbed plays an important role in distributing and transferring the train loading to subgrade, preventing subgrade from bearing softened by providing appropriate stiffness for subgrade, and eventually supporting the track structures. Presently, the reinforced roadbed was widely constructed in high speed line and is proceeding a research about economical thickness and methodologies for the design of reinforced roadbed. Field test section is located at Kongbu line which is from Suwon to Pungtack. In this study, field test were measured a track irregularity with several types of reinforced roadbed materials by using Track Master. The field testing were conducted between March, 2006 and March, 2007.

  • In this study, the increasing gear boxes for the high speed vertical in-line centrifugal pump are developed through rotor dynamic analysis. The developed increasing gear boxes are two kinds for 18000rpm and 25000rpm at the output shaft. The gear sets suitable for high speed and high load are manufactured by investigating AGMA bending strength and AGMA surface strength severely. The rotor dynamic analysis on gear sets and bearings is performed in order to avoid the critical speeds and other troubles. As a result of study, the two increasing gear boxes for the high speed vertical in-line centrifugal pump are designed and manufactured.
