  • We describe a backprojection filtering method for limited angle tomography. In order to reduce blur artifacts originated from the out-of-planes and control high-frequency noise, we employed two band-limited window functions, and which were realized by Hann filters in this study. Based on the experimentally measured data, the performance of the developed method is demonstrated by comparing with the conventional shift-and-add and filtered backprojection methods. Application of the developed method to the dental imaging has a potential to be used for the preoperative evaluation of the jaw for dental implants with much reduced patient dose instead of the conventional dental computed tomography.

  • In Korean geology that crystalline rock is dominant, the properties of subsurface including the anisotropy are distributed complexly and changed abruptly. Because of such geological environments, cross-hole seismic traveltime tomography is widely used to obtain the high resolution image of the subsurface for the engineering purposes in the geotechnical sites. However, because the cross-hole tomography has a wide propagation angle coverage relatively, its data tend to include the seismic velocity anisotropy comparing with the surface seismic methods. It can cause the misinterpretation that the cross-hole seismic data including the anisotropic effects are analyzed and treated with the general processing techniques assuming the isotropy. Therefore, we need to consider the seismic anisotropy in cross-hole seismic traveltime tomography. The seismic anisotropic tomography algorithm, which is developed for evaluation of the velocity anisotropy, includes several inversion schemes in order to make the inversion process stable and robust. First of all, the set of the inversion parameters is limited to one slowness, two ratios of slowness and one direction of the anisotropy symmetric axis. The ranges of the inversion parameters are localized by the pseudo-beta transform to obtain the reasonable inversion results and the inversion constraints are controlled efficiently by ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. Especially, the inversion using the Fresnel volume is applied to the anisotropic tomography and it can make the anisotropic tomography more stable than ray tomography as it widens the propagation angle coverage.

  • Nondestructive radiography using cosmic ray muons has been used for decades to monitor nuclear reactor and spent nuclear fuel storage. Because nuclear fuel assemblies are highly dense and large, typical radiation probes such as x-rays cannot penetrate these target imaging objects. Although cosmic ray muons are highly penetrative for nuclear fuels as a result of their relatively high energy, the wide application of muon tomography is limited because of naturally low cosmic ray muon flux. This work presents a new image reconstruction algorithm to maximize the utility of cosmic ray muon in tomography applications. Muon momentum information is used to improve imaging resolution, as well as muon scattering angle. In this work, a new convolution was introduced known as M-value, which is a mathematical integration of two measured quantities: scattering angle and momentum. It captures the objects' quantity and density in a way that is easy to use with image reconstruction algorithms. The results demonstrate how to reconstruct images when muon momentum measurements are included in a typical muon scattering tomography algorithm. Using M-value improves muon tomography image resolution by replacing the scattering angle value without increasing computation costs. This new algorithm is projected to be a standard nondestructive radiography technique for spent nuclear fuel and nuclear material management.

  • Recent advance in electronics and scintillators makes it possible to utilize the time-of-flight (TOF) information in improving image reconstruction of positron emission tomography(PET). In this paper, we propose a TOF-based fast image reconstruction method for PET. The proposed method uses the deconvolution of TOF data for each angle view and the rotational averaging of deconvolved images. Simulation results show an improved performance of the proposed method, as compared with filtered backprojection (FBP) method, TOF-FBP, and TOF version of expectation-maximization(EM) methods. Simulation results also show a great potentiality of the proposed method in limited angle tomography applications.

  • Holographic interferometric tomography can provide reconstruction of instantaneous three-dimensional gross flow fields. The technique however confronts ill-posed reconstruction problems in practical applications. Experimental data are usually limited in projection and angular scanning when a field is captured instantaneously or under the obstruction of test models and test section enclosures. An algorithm, based on a series expansion method, has been developed to improve the reconstruction under the ill-posed conditions. A three-dimensional natural convection flow around two interacting isothermal cubes is experimentally investigated. The flow can provide a challenging reconstruction problem and lend itself to accurate numerical solution for comparison. The refractive index fields at two horizontal sections of the thermal plume with and without an opaque object are reconstructed at a limited view angle of 80$\circ$. The experimental reconstructions are then compared with those from numerical calculation and thermocouple thermometry. It confirms that the technique is applicable to reconstruction of reasonably complex, three-dimensional flow fields.

  • Since the resolution of the 2-D hole-to-hole seismic traveltime tomography is affected by the limited ray transmission angle, various methods were used to improve the resolution. Linear traveltime interpolation(LTI) ray tracing method was chosen for forward-modeling method. Inversion results using the LTI method were compared with those using the other ray tracing methods. As an inversion algorithm, SIRT method was used. In the iterative non-linear inversion method, the cost of ray tracing is quite expensive. To reduce the cost, each raypath was stored and the inversion was performed from this information. Using the proposed method, fast convergence was achieved. Inversion results are likely to be affected by the initial velocity guess, especially when the ray transmission angle was limited. To provide a good initial guess for the inversion, generalized regression neural network(GRNN) method was used. When the transmitted raypath angle is not limited or the geological model is very complex, the inversion results are not affected by initial velocity model very much. Since the raypath angles, however, are limited in most geophysical tomographic problems, the enhancement of resolution in tomography can be achieved by providing a proper initial velocity model by another inversion algorithm such as GRNN.

  • In 1942 Stafne reported 35 asymptomatic, radiolucent cavities that were unilaterally located in the posterior region of the mandible between the mandibular angle and the third molar, and below the mandibular canal. The term Stafne bone cavity (SBC) is now used for such asymptomatic lingual bone depressions of the lower jaw. Since then there have been many reports of SBCs but very fews tudies have used cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for their diagnosis. The aim of this paper is to describe the clinical and radiological characteristics of two cases of SBCs and the importance of limited CBCT in confirming the diagnosis.

  • When the range of projection angles is limited, tomographic reconstruction suffers from artifacts caused by incomplete data. One can consider a data completion technique, which estimates projection data at unobserved angles using a prior knowledge or mathematical exploration, but the result is often not improved; the improvement by the data completion often undermined by the artifacts by inaccurate estimation, In this paper, we propose an iterative method, which computes projection data at unobserved angles by using the current estimate on the image, links the computed projection data to the observed ones by using the consistence condition of Radon transform, and reconstruct the next estimate on the image by filtered backprojection. The proposed method does not require a prior knowledge on the image, and has much faster approximation rate than the expectation maximization method. The performance of the proposed method was tested through several simulation studies.

  • The aim of this study is to point out the uniqueness of Doppler optical coherence tomography (DOCT) for use in a probe station for (in vivo) visualization of microscale flow and structure and to maximize the effectiveness of DOCT by overcoming its limitations. Conventional DOCT produces images of only one of the velocity components that is parallel to the incident light. In this study, a multi-angle DOCT to quantify a velocity vector field is proposed; this is an extension from a velocity scalar field to a vector field. Quantifying an instantaneous three-dimensional velocity field in a pulsating flow is another challenge because of its limited frame rate. The in-vivo pulsating blood flow is measured by using an electrocardiogram-gated multi-angle DOCT in a hamster cheek pouch model. It is shown that the aliasing problem caused by a relatively low frame rate is resolved by using this method of measurement.
