  • This paper describes the characteristics of lightning-induced voltages on subscriber telecommunication lines in Korea. Lightning parameters such as peak voltage, rise time, decay time, and steepness of the wave front were statistically analyzed from the measured results obtained using a waveform memory system. An induced voltage measurement system was also developed and installed at 286 sites in Korea to collect the induced voltage data. The distributions of lightning-induced voltages were also analyzed using these data.

  • The electricity distribution system in Korea is adopting a multi-grounding system. Protection of this distribution system against lightning is performed by installing overhead ground wires over the high voltage wires, and connecting the overhead ground wires to the ground every 200 m. The ground resistance in this system is limited not to exceed $50\Omega$ and overhead ground wire and neutral wire are multiple parallel lines. Although overhead ground wire and neutral wire are installed in different locations on the same pole, this circuit configuration has duplicated functions of providing a return path for unbalanced currents and protecting the distribution system against induced lightning. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the induced lightning shielding effect according to the neutral wire installation structure of a 22.9kV distribution line in order to present a new 22.9kV distribution line structure model and characteristics. This study calculated induced lightning voltage by performing numerical analysis when an overhead ground wire is present in the multi-grounding type 22.9kV distribution line structure, and calculated the induced lightning shielding effect based on this calculated induced lightning voltage. In addition, this study proposed and analyzed an improved distribution line model allowing the use of both overhead wire and neutral wire to be installed in the current distribution lines. The result of MATLAB simulation using the conditions applied by Yokoyama showed almost no difference between the induced lightning voltage developed in the current line and that developed in the proposed line. This signifies that shielding the induced lightning voltage through overhead wire makes no difference between current and proposed distribution line structures. That is, this study found that the ground resistance of the overhead wire had an effect on the induced lightning voltage, and that the induced lightning shielding effect of overhead wire is small.

  • Lightning induced voltage is a major factor that causes interruptions on distribution lines. In this paper, analytical expressions are proposed to evaluate a lightning induced voltage on power lines directly in the time domain without the need to apply any extra conversions. The proposed expressions can consider the widely used current functions and models in contrast to the earlier analytical expressions which had a number of limitations related to the simplification of the channel base current and the current along the lightning channel. The results show that the simulated values based on the proposed method are in good agreement with the previous studies and the proposed expressions can be used for optimizing the insulation and protection level of existing and new lines being designed.

  • In this paper, the Induced voltage on transmission line by lightning was calculated using FDTD method and the lightning parameters such as peak voltage, rise time, and decay time for the lightning location and line length were analyzed. To verify the results, lightning induced voltage was measured in the field using real telecommunication line. Results from the collected data were compared with the calculated results. It was found that the rise time and the decay time were increased as the line length and the distance between the line and lightning location were increased. Also, the peak voltage was affected more by the overhead line length than by the total line length, while the rise time and the decay time were more affected by the total line length.

  • Lightning is one of hazards affecting the rapid-transit railway system. There are two effects, which are direct lightning surge to electric car line and induced lightning surge. Protection methods for the direct lightning surge are studied with various occasions, however, study of induced lightning surge is insufficient in spite of a large or small effects. In this paper, it is analysed the way that serge voltage is induced to electric car line by lightning strikes. By modeling the propagation process and the coupling phenomenon of electromagnetic wave produced by lightning strikes, it is achieved to make integrative circuit model combined with existing electric car model. The study is conducted into three different waveform of electromagnetic wave produced by lightning; rectangular wave, double exponential distribution wave, triangle wave. It is also simulated that the inducing serge is coupled to electric car line in an arbitrary location. The simulation results in that, when rapidly changing rectangular wave is supplied, maximum power is induced to electric car line.

  • This study performed simulation tests to prevent induced lightning that occurs to a 22.9 kV-Y distribution line. A simulated distribution line reduced to 1/50 of an actual distribution line was installed to measure the induced voltage according to the change in grounding resistance. It was found that the induced voltage increased as the grounding resistance increased but that the range of its increase was small. This study examined the reliability of the proposed lightning preventive distribution line using the Minitab program (Minitab 17). When a grounding resistance of $300{\Omega}$ was maintained for each electric pole, the Anderson Darling (AD) was 0.410, the smallest, and the P value was analyzed to be 0.323, verifying that the reliability and stability were excellent. Therefore, these results will be utilized as a basis for the substantiation of a lightning preventive distribution line before its installation.

  • In the calculation of lightning-induced voltage, it is used the various parameters obtained by LPATS being operated in KEPCO from 1995. Based on the lightning-induced voltage and the exact lightning position acquired by the developed program, we can predict the extent of damages in distribution systems. The result in this paper is very useful in finding fault location by lightning and performing rapid outage recovery and maintenance of distribution line equipments.

  • This paper deals with the effects of grounding conductors for metal oxide surge arresters. When surge arresters are improperly installed, the results can cause costly damage of electrical equipments. In particular, the route of surge arrester connection is very important because bends and links of leads increase the impedances to lightning surges and tend to nullify the effectiveness of a grounding conductor. Therefore, there is a need to know how effective installation of lightning surge arresters is made in order to control voltage and to absorb energy at high lightning currents. The effectiveness of a grounding conductor and 18 [㎸] metal oxide distribution line arresters was experimentally investigated under the lightning and oscillatory impulse voltages. Thus, the results are as follows; (1) The induced voltage of a grounding conductor is drastically not affected by length of a connecting line, but it is very sensitive to types of grounding conductor. (2) The coaxial cable having a low characteristic impedance is suitable as a grounding conductor. (3) It is also clear from these results that bonding the metal raceway enclosing the grounding conductor to the grounding electrode is very effective because of skin effect. (4) The induced voltages of grounding conductors for the oscillatory impulse voltages are approximately twice as large as those for the lightning impulse voltages.

  • A strong need to improve the quality of electric power is increased because of increasing use of the sensitive and small-sized electronic devices. The surges on the low-voltage ac power lines are induced by nearby lightning return strokes, and the facilities for HA, OA, FA, ME as well as computer are easily damaged by high-voltage transients. The behaviors of lightning surge characteristics transferred from the primary winding to the secondary winding in distribution transformers using a Marx generator were experimentally investigated. The transfer characteristics of lightning surge associated with a custom service ground of secondary side were also examined.
