  • This paper compares the performance of lightning shielding analysis methods using the seven striking distance formulae in substation. For comparison, we evaluate the number of expected strikes and exposed area using WinIGS Software. Seven striking distance formulae are compared using the electrogeometric model analysis and the rolling sphere method. Based on the electrogeometric model analysis, the risk of shielding failure in either the whole substation or parts of it is determined. According to the simulation results, one can justify whether the substation satisfies the criterion of shielding design. In particular, according to the rolling sphere method, the exposed areas in substation determine the location of the additional shielding poles or shield wires. Therefore, the installation of the additional shielding poles and shield wires in substation was accepted by shield design at the phase conductors exposed in the larger area.

  • This paper analyzes overvoltage on testing line for various parameter effect examination. Model systems consist of overhead line and underground cable. The model considered actual characteristic data of distribution lines. and will be constructed at testing yard. The simulations were performed under various line configuration such as cable kinds, cable length, lightning wave, lightning wave time, transformer and branch circuits. The simulation models are established by EMTP/ATPDraw and Line Constants are calculated by ATP_LCC. When lightning surge strikes on conductor of overhead line, EMTP/ATPDraw calculates overvoltage in many cases. Simulation results will be compared with real testing results at testing yard. The compared results will be used to establish protection methods in actual underground distribution systems.

  • One of the ways to improve the stability of power facilities used in power systems is to use power surge arresters and to protect against transient overvoltages and surges in normal operation. Also it is important to reduce the impact of lightning strikes because lightning can create overvoltage in the grid of the wind turbine and affect power quality. So This paper analyzes the effects of overvoltage and adjacent turbines due to single strike and multi strike to ground impedance changes when the surge arrester is deteriorated in a wind power farm.

  • This paper presents the transient state characteristic and single phase ground fault occurred by deterioration of surge arrester when offshore wind turbine is struck by lightning strike. The wind turbine and submarine cable data are based on the 2.5GW offshore wind farm planned in South Korea Southwest Seashore. During lightning strikes, additional ground fault can lead to damage of the generation components. So, the sensitive analyses are conducted in order to investigate the effects of lightning strike on offshore wind farm.

  • This paper examines the insulation coordination scheme of line and equipment in distribution system when the direct lightning surge strikes. The BIL that is applied in distribution system is not properly considered the performance and operation of arresters. Because of that, the high BIL is being used at partial system. This paper variously analyse the lightning overvoltage of line and equipment with earth of overhead grounding wire and installation types of arrester. Form these result, authors examine the rationality of BIL.

  • Lightning causes physical damage to aircraft, such as melting, burning and arcing, and magnetic field that occurs on the aircraft's outer body during the penetration of a lightning stroke causes voltage and current transients in the electronics and wiring within the aircraft. This effect will cause induced lightning strikes in the aircraft's internal airborne electronic systems, preventing safe flight. This paper introduces protection circuit design techniques, and the test results that meet the requirements for certification of criteria.

This is referred to as indirect effects of lightning capability of an aircraft having electrical electronic equipment failure or damage to bring lightning induced voltages. In order to protect the avionics from lightning indirect effects of these aircraft are analyzing the effects of lightning strikes on aircraft and aircraft systems and interior design needs protection against the threat on their part. In this paper, we introduce RTCA DO-160 F, component selection process according to Section 22 category selection method and the selected level for determining the level of such measures for protection against lightning of multipurpose display for this aircraft. It also introduces the actual test process to confirm that the designed effectiveness of the selected part. We expect a good example of the lightning planned for future development of measures designed avionics through each step of the process introduced this.

  • Among the failures of photovoltaic power generation facilities, failures caused by surges account for 20% of the total failure rate, and energy emissions of tens to hundreds [A] during power generation and electrical damage to inverters and connection boards lead to electrical safety accidents. In particular, in the case of lightning, an abnormal voltage is induced in an electric circuit to destroy insulation, and the current flowing at this time causes a fire and acts as a factor that accelerates the deterioration of parts. Due to this action, the problem of electrical safety of solar power generation devices spreading from outside the city center to the inside of the city center such as houses, apartments, and government offices is emerging. Since lightning strikes cause both field-based and conducted electrical interference, this effect increases with increasing cable length or conductor loops. In addition, surge damages not only solar modules, inverters and monitoring devices, but also building facilities, which can eventually cause operational shutdown due to fire of the photovoltaic power generation system and consequent financial loss. Therefore, in this paper, a lightning protection system for solar power generation devices is studied for the purpose of reducing property damage and human casualties due to the increase in fire and electrical safety accidents caused by lightning strikes in photovoltaic power generation systems.

  • Lightning can deliver large amounts of energy to the aircraft in a short period of time, resulting in catastrophic consequence. In particular, lightning strikes accompanied by high temperature heat and current can damage aircraft surface and internal electronic equipment, seriously affecting flight safety. Lightning experiments to analyze this effect use a Component A waveform with a maximum current of 200 kA as specified in SAE ARP 5412B. However, the actual lightning occurs mostly below 35kA and lightning indirect tests are conducted by reducing waveforms to prevent damage to internal electronic equipment. In this study, we examine previous methods to plot the Component A reduced waveform and identify their limitations. We then propose a new method to plot the reduced waveform based on adjusting the correction factor of the aircraft lightning Component A waveform. Finally, the electromagnetic analysis software EMA3D was used to compare the internal induced current size reduction ratio of the internal cable harness of the EC-155B helicopter.
