  • In this paper, large scale experimental model tests were performed to investigate the distribution of earth pressure acting on embedded rigid pipes having different bedding conditions. For these tests, very light weighted EPS blocks were installed at top and bottom of the rigid pipe and Jumunjin Standard Sand was used as a ground material. As results of model tests, for the case of no bedding on the pipe, the measured pressure at the bottom of the pipe was $4.96_{tf/m^2}$ whereas they were in the range of $1.87{\sim}4.96_{tf/m^2}$ in the case of EPS beddings being installed at the top and the bottom of the pipe. Therefore, for the case of EPS bedding being installed, the ratio of reduced pressures acting on the pipe, compared with the case of no EPS beddings, were in the rage of 16~62%. As a result of parametric test with changing the locations of EPS bedding, the trend of reducing the stress acting on the pipe was in the order of bottom bedding, top bedding, and top and bottom bedding. Effect of bedding positions on the reduced magnitude of acting pressure on the pipe was more significant in the case of top bedding than in the case of the bottom bedding.

  • Bead shape in high frequency electric resistance (HER) pipe welding gives useful information on judging current welding conditon. In most welding process, heat input is controlled by skilled operators observing color and shape of bead. In this paper, a visual monitoring system is designed to observe bead shape in HERW pipe welding process by using structured light beam and a C.I.D(Charge injection device) camera. To avoid some difficul- ties arising in extracting stable features of stripe pattern and classifying the extracted features, Kohonen neural network is used to classify such bead shapes. The experimental results show accurate classification performance of the proposed method.

  • The effects of water injection (WI) and urea injection for NOx on a 4-cylinder Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine were investigated experimentally. For water injection, it was installed at the intake pipe and the water quantity was controlled at the intake manifold and Manifold Air Flow (MAF) temperatures while the urea injection was located at the exhaust pipe and the urea quantity was controlled by NOx quantity and MAF. The effects of WI system, urea-SCR system and the combined system were investigated with and without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Several experiments were performed to characterize the urea-SCR system, using engine operating points of varying raw NOx emissions. The results of the Stoichiometric Urea Flow (SUF) and NOx map were obtained. In addition, NOx results were illustrated according to the engine speed and load. It is concluded that the NOx reduction effects of the combined system without the EGR were better than those with the EGR-based engine.

  • Two sample varieties of Yushin and Jinheung were used for the experiment in low-level wetty paddy field which was arranged with PVC pipe underdrainage of 6m in distance and 60cm, 90cm, and 120cm in depth and control, using sprit plot design with three replications. On the yield of brown rice, Yushin was increased by 24.8% in the 90cm plot and Jinheung by 16.7% in the 120cm plot, respectively, over the control. The ratio of matured grains of these two varieties was increased significantly by the underdrainage and the number of grains per head of Yushin was also increased in drained plots. Otherwise, the underdrainage enhanced the plant height in the early growth of rice plant and further increased the culm height and panicle length. It seemed that these results might enhance the light-receiving effciency in the latter growth of rice plant and bring about the effect fo increased yields by the underdrainage.

  • Area of greenhouse increases rapidly up to 45,265ha by the year of 1998 in Korea. Hot air heater with light oil combustion is the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season. However, exhaust gas heat discharged to atmosphere through chimney reaches up to 10~20% of total heat of the oil combusted in the furnace. In order to recapture the heat of this exhaust gas and to recycle for greenhouse heating, the heat pipe type exhaust heat recovery system was manufactured and tested in this experiment. The exhaust heat recovery system was made for space heating in the greenhouse. The system consisted of a heat exchanger made of heat pipes, ${\emptyset}15.88{\times}600mm$ located in the rectangular box of $600{\times}550{\times}330mm$, a blower and air ducts. The rectangular box was divided by two compartments where hot chamber exposed to exhaust gas in which heat pipes could pick up the heat of exhaust gas, and by evaporation of the heat transfer medium in the pipes it carries the heat to the cold compartment, then the blower moves the heat to greenhouse. The number of heat pipe was 60, calculated considering the heat exchange amount between flue gas and heat transfer capacity of heat pipe. The working fluid of heat pipe was acetone because acetone is known for its excellent heat transfer capacity. The system was attached to the exhaust gas path. According to the performance test it could recover 53,809 to 74,613kJ/hr depending on the inlet air temperature of 12 to $-12^{circ}C$ respectively when air flow rate $1,100\textrm{m}^3/hr$. The exhaust gas temperature left the heat exchanger dropped to $100^{circ}C$ from $270^{circ}C$ by the heat exchange between the air and the flue gas, the temperature difference was collected by the air and the warm air temperature was about $60^{circ}C$ at the air flow rate of $1,100\textrm{m}^3/hr$. This heat pipe type exhaust heat recovery system can reduce fuel cost by 10% annually according to the economic analysis.

  • To prevent safety accidents caused by aging pipe infrastructure and to maintain water quality, construction projects for water and sewage pipes are actively conducted across Korea. This study analyzed the criteria situations, site survey details, and regulation revisions related to the calculation of construction cost standards for pipe laying and joining work. The analysis showed that the major causes for revision are the unclear construction scope, limitations in implementing some pipe materials due to installation facility types, workforce focused on ordinary labor, limitations of manual laying work, and the lack of tool hire cost and machine expense-calculation criteria. Field studies were conducted to categorize the pipes according to their features, in addition to identifying the use of lifting heavy equipment and light equipment. In addition, excavation and testing work conducted in connection to pipe laying, as well as the use of skilled labor, were investigated. The current study clarified the work scope through new common items, provides an organization based on the pipe material, adjusted the workforce ratio to focus more on skilled labor, and developed grounds for calculating machine expenses. These revisions were estimated to save approximately 1.28% of the construction costs in each project according to an analysis of the construction cost impact study. truction costs in each project, according to an analysis of construction cost impact study.

  • Sewage pipelines are one of important infra-structures. The main reasons of sewage pipelint failure are improper backfill materials and compaction controls in field. Especially, it is very difficult to compact the lower part of circula pipelines. In order to overcome these problems, the prefabricated light-weight plastic foundation was developed. Couple of load-displacement tests were carried out to get the characteristic of failure. From the limited laboratory loading tests, the use of prefabricated light-weight plastic foundation is an alternative to solve the difficulty of backfill materials and compaction control.

  • The pipes used in buildings are generally categorized into metallic or plastic materials. Metal pipes, such as copper and stainless steel pipes, are mainly used for water and hot water supply, and for the heating system. However, plastic pipes made of polyethylene and cross-linked polyethylene are used for floor heating, water drainage, and air vent systems. Usually, plastic pipes have thermal demerits, such as high linear expansion coefficients and bending phenomenon by hot water, although the pipes have several merits of light weight, low price, low thermal conductivity, and the comparatively high workability of metal pipes. Therefore, if those kind of demerits are overcome, plastic pipes can be easily accepted for hot water systems. This research is aimed to evaluate the applicability for vertical heating pipes of a plastic pipe system consisting of electric fusion fitting of a conductive carbon compound and propylene random glass fiber pipe, through measurement of the expansion rate and leakage in summer and winter seasons, in the apartment construction field.
