  • The purpose of this paper is to study the possibility of practical use of gasoline-methanol mixed fuel as an alternative fuel of gasoline engines in the light of engine performances and harmful exhaust emissions as well as mixings and separations of the mixed fuels. When the methanol of 99.8% purity is mixed with super or regular gasoline available on the market today, the experimental results obtained without modifying carburetor in this study are as follows; 1.The separation ratio depends upon the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio only, regardless of fuel temperature and fuel additives for preventing separation of phase. 2.The critical absorption ratio is affected by the gasoline-methanol mixing ratio, its temperature and the quantity of fuel additives. 3.Concerning the distillation temperature, the initial point of all sorts of fuels is almost same, but 10% point and 35-60% point of mixed fuels are lower than those of gasoline only. 4.In case of throttle valve opening set, engine output using the mixed fuels is decreased compared to gasoline, but thermal efficiency is increased as a consequence of decreasing specific energy consumption. 5.In case of fixed load test, thermal efficiency is increased at low engine speed even under low part-load as well as under comparatively high part-load including full load. 6.CO and NOx emissions are reduced remarkably with the mixed fuels.

  • This paper proposes a high-efficiency, dual-mode PWM / linear buck converter with a wide-input range. The proposed converter was designed with a mode selector that can change the operation between PWM / linear mode by sensing a load current. The proposed converter operates in a linear mode during a light load and in PWM mode during a heavy load condition in order to ensure high efficiency. In addition, the mode selector uses a bit counter and a transmission gate designed to protect from a malfunction due to noise or a time-delay. Also, in conditions between $-40^{\circ}C$ and $140^{\circ}C$, the converter has variations in temperature of $0.5mV/^{\circ}C$ in the PWM mode and of $0.24mV/^{\circ}C$ in the linear mode. Also, to prevent malfunction and breakdown of the IC due to static electricity, the reliability of IC was improved by embedding a self-produced 8 kV-class(Chip level) ESD protection circuit of a P-substrate Triggered SCR type with high robustness characteristics.

  • For the purpose of investigating the effective removal of heating/cooling load from light-weighted building envelope, two air-conditioning systems, conventional parameter air-conditioning system and air-barrier system, are evaluated and compared by both experiment and simulation with six different cases during heating and cooling season. In addition, the characteristics of window-side building thermal load are assessed by varying supply air velocity in order to seek the optimal system operation condition. The results are as follows. 1) Air-barrier system is more effective to remove heating/cooling load at perimeter zone than conventional parameter air-conditioning system. Moreover, the better effectiveness appears during cooling season than during heating season. 2) The experiment during cooling season provides that indoor temperature of air-barrier system shows $1^{\circ}C$ less than that of the conventional system with similar outdoor air temperature profile, and indoor temperature distribution is more uniform throughout the experimented model space. It concludes that air-barrier system can achieve energy saving comparing to the conventional system. 3) The capturing efficiency of air-barrier system is 0.47 on heating season and 0.2 on cooling season with the same supply air volume. It results that the system performs effectively to remove building thermal load, moreover demonstrates high efficiency during cooling season. 4) The simulation results provide that capturing efficiency to evaluate the effective removal of building load from perimeter zone shows high value when supply air velocity is 1 m/s.

  • Resonant converters have several salient features such as high efficiency and low noise. Therefore, ZVS-PWM controlled series resonant converter with active-clamp technique is presented. The combination of an active-clamp technique and resonant circuit makes it possible to control the output voltage of the resonant converter with PWM. This new resonant converter was implemented and has achieved a good controllability. In this paper, the normal load characteristics and abnormal voltage increase in the case of the light load are analyzed. As a result, it is clarified that the stray capacitance of the transformer is a cause of the abnormal voltage increase. Then, it is confirmed that the abnormal voltage increase is suppressed by decreasing the duty ratio. ZVS condition is analyzed. The maximum efficiency of 89% is obtained for the output of 10V and 5A.

  • Recently residential buildings are characterized with high-rise and high density. Under this circumstance, achieving comfortable and healthy indoor environment with minimized energy consumption becomes a very challenging engineering and societal issue. Along this the increased size and transparency of window as well as light surface caused by high stories lowers the heat shield efficiency of building. Since glass that constitutes building surface has low heat efficiency, it aggravates heat loss of all building considerably, thereby resulting in extreme heating load and cooling load in the country where temperature varies much in summer and winter. The research will check whether experiment can be effectively done by overcoming the limit of existing artificial solar laboratory constructed in the country and properly adjusting controlled variables with simplified function through construction of this experimental set.

  • This study examines the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation of an active-clamped forward converter (ACFC) with a current-doubler rectifier (CDR). The ZVS condition can be obtained with a much smaller leakage inductance compared to that of a conventional ACFC. Due to the significantly reduced leakage inductance, the design is optimized and the circulating loss is reduced. The operation of the ACFC with a CDR is analyzed, and a detailed ZVS analysis is conducted on the basis of a steady-state analysis. From the results, a design consideration for ZVS improvement is presented. Loss analyses of the converters shows that enhanced soft-switching contributes to an efficiency improvement under light-load condition. Experimental results from a 100-W (5-V/20-A) prototype verify that the ACFC with a CDR can attain ZVS across an extended load range of loads and achieve a higher efficiency than conventional ACFCs.

  • A new asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) half bridge converter with improved ZVS performance is proposed. The ZVS operation of the proposed converter can be maintained from no load to full load conditions since the magnetizing current of the transformer contributes to the ZVS operation at light loads without considerable conduction loss of the transformer and switch. Synchronous rectification is employed to reduce the rectification loss. Operational principles, large signal modeling, ZVS analysis and design equations are presented. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed converter can achieve a large ZVS range and significant improvement in efficiency for a 100W (5V, 20A) prototype converter.

  • In this paper, a simple yet efficient auto mode-hop ripple control structure for buck converters with light load operation enhancement is proposed. The converter, which operates under a wide range of input and output voltages, makes use of a state-dependent hysteretic comparator. Depending on the output current, the converter automatically changes the operating mode. This improves the efficiency and reduces the output voltage ripple for a wide range of output currents for given input and output voltages. The sensitivity of the output voltage to the circuit elements is less than 14%, which is seven times lower than that for conventional converters. To assess the efficiency of the proposed converter, it is designed and implemented with commercially available components. The converter provides an output voltage in the range of 0.9V to 31V for load currents of up to 3A when the input voltage is in the range of 5V to 32V. Analytical design expressions which model the operation of the converter are also presented. This circuit can be implemented easily in a single chip with an external inductor and capacitor for both fixed and variable output voltage applications.

  • This paper proposes the control algorithm for maximum efficiency drive of PWM inverter - induction motor system with high dynamic performance. If the induction motor is driven under light load with rated magnetizing current, the Iron loss is excessively large compared with the codder loss which results in doer motor efficiency. Maximum efficiency drive of an induction motor can be achieved by controlling the magnetizing current to satisfy the optimal ratio that leads the total motor loss to be a minimum value at a given speed. The proposed control algorithm essentially uses vector control technique and adopts voltage decoupling control strategy to prevent the degradation of dynamic performance due to reduced magnetizing current. To verify the proposed method, digital simulations and experiments are carried out for a squirrel-cage induction motor with the rating of 2.2[kW].

  • The single resonant inverter is widely employed in typical inductive power transfer (IPT) systems to generate a high-frequency current in the primary side. However, the power capacity of a single resonant inverter is limited by the constraints of power electronic devices and the relevant cost. Consequently, IPT systems fail to meet high-power application requirements, such as those in rail applications. Total harmonic distortion (THD) may also violate the standard electromagnetic interference requirements with phase shift control under light load conditions. A power regulation approach with selective harmonic elimination is proposed on the basis of a parallel multi-inverter to upgrade the power levels of IPT systems and suppress THD under light load conditions by changing the output voltage pulse width and phase shift angle among parallel multi-inverters. The validity of the proposed control approach is verified by using a 1,412.3 W prototype system, which achieves a maximum transfer efficiency of 90.602%. Output power levels can be dramatically improved with the same semiconductor capacity, and distortion can be effectively suppressed under various load conditions.
