There have been controversies over whether explosion hazardous area(EHA) should be classified for facilities which use lighter-than-air gases such as city gas, hydrogen and ammonia. Two view points are confronting each other: an economic piont of view that these gases are lighter than air and disperse rapidly, hence do not form EHA upon release into the atmosphere, and a safety point of view that they are also inflammable gases, hence can form EHA although the extent is limited compared to heavy gases. But various standards such as KS, IEC, API, NFPA do not exclude light gases when classifying EHA and present examples of EHA for light gas facilities. This study calculates EHA using the hypothetical volume in the IEC code where the hole sizes required for the calculation were selected according to various nominal pipe sizes in such a way to conform to the EHA data in the API code and HSL. Then, 25 leakage scenarios were suggested for 5 different pipe sizes and 5 operating pressures that cover typical operating conditions of light gas facilities. The EHA for the minimum leakage scenario(25 mm pipe, 0.01MPa pressure) was found to correspond to a hypothetical volume larger than 0.1 $m^3$(medium-level ventilation). This confirms the validity of classifying EHA for facilities using lighter-than-air gases. Finally, a computer program called HACPL was developed for easy use by light gas facilities that classifies EHA according to operating pressures and pipe sizes.
The pyrovalves are widely used in aerospace industry for the opening and closing of flow channel due to the light-weight, high reliability and zero-leakage. In the United States, the loss of some spacecrafts using hydrazine as the propellent were proven by the blowby. Blowby is defined as the leakage of pyrovalve ignition combustion gas to the flow channel. Since then, the interference fit was applied for the sealing of piston to prevent the blowby. In this study, literature survey on pyrovalve technology is summarized mainly for AIAA papers. Common problems, improvement method, and performance comparisons of pyrovalves are also presented.
In this paper, we introduce an edge-spike modulation method for visible light communication (VLC). This method is effective in preventing LED flicker and 120 Hz noise interference in base-band VLC. In the VLC transmitter, edge-spikes are generated by passing the digital data through a simple RC-high pass filter (HPF). The LED modulation of the edge-spikes does not change the average power of the LED light; thus it prevents LED flicker. In the VLC receiver, the 120 Hz noise from other lighting lamps is easily eliminated by RC-HPF, while the edge-spike signal is detected normally. In our experiment, the message of an air-quality sensor was successfully transmitted using edge-spike modulation. This structure is useful in constructing, e.g., wireless gas monitoring sensor systems to warn and prevent harmful gas leakage accidents in buildings using LED light.

The fracture analysis of $SiN_x$ layers, which were deposited by low-temperature plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (LT-PECVD) and could be used for an encapsulation layer of a flexible organic light emitting display (OLED), was performed by an electrical method. The specimens of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure were prepared using Pt and ITO electrodes. We stressed MIM specimen mechanically by bending outward with a bending radius of 15mm repeatedly and measured leakage current through the top and bottom electrodes. We also observed the cracks, were generated on surface, by using optical microscope. Once the cracks were initiated, the leakage current started to flow. As the amount of cracks increased, the leakage current was also increased. By correlating the electrical leakage current in the MIM specimen with the bending times, the amount of cracks in the encapsulation layer, generated during the bending process, was quantitatively estimated and fracture behavior of the encapsulation layer was also closely investigated.

The main problem in porcelain as a high voltage insulator is that the water film is felled on the insulator surface due to rain, flog, and dew. In the presence of contamination. leakage current increases which may lead to flashover that could be followed by an outage of the power system. These days, high voltage polymer outdoer insulators have been studied and widely used, because they have excellent electrical and mechanical properties, superior performance of flashover for contamination. light weight, easy installation or handling. no maintenance during service, competitive price, and so on. First of a1l the excellent performance of the silicone rubber in polluted and wet conditions is attributed to the ability of the material to maintain the hydrophobicity of the surface in the presence of severe contaminants and wet conditions. This is due to a low surface energy of the silicone rubber. But the leakage current and some surface discharge occurs on the surface of insulator when the insulator is used for a long time. So the leakage current and the surface discharge current are important lo estimate the condition of the silicone rubber surface. In this paper, the average leakage current the surface discharge current the surface rubber surface with the salt fog condition for the first stage.
Responses of tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi) leaves of different age to diphenyl ether herbicide oxyfluorfen were evaluated with respect to cellular leakage, chlorophyll loss, and membrane lipid peroxidation. When tobacco leaves of different age were incubated under light condition at $25^{\circ}C$ following 12hr dark incubation. Significant electrolyte leakage from the treated tissues into the bathing medium occurred. The change of electrolyte leakage was proportional to the oxytluorfen concentration and the duration of light exposure to the tissues. Electrolyte leakage from the tissues treated with oxyfluorfen was highly dependent on the leaf age. From the tissues of younger age, more electrolyte leakage occurred and lag period was greatly reduced. Chlorophyll loss and membrane lipid peroxidation, as measured by malondialdehyde production, caused by oxyfluorfen treatment were also dependent an the age of treated leaf tissues. In conclusion, physiological responses of tobacco leaves to oxyfluorfen greatly varied with the age of treated tissues, and thus tobacco plants could be used as appropriate materials for studying the mechanisms of tolerance to diphenyl ether herbicides.
This study examined the effects of particle size on the light scattering of a nano-sized color filter pigment used to obtain a range of colors in liquid crystal displays. The contrast ratio is one of the most important characteristics of liquid crystal displays. When a color filter is located between two crossed polarizers, the size of the pigment can give rise to a decrease in the contrast ratio due to Rayleigh scattering by the nanoparticles in the filter. The size effect of the color filter pigment on the contrast ratio was investigated in terms of the depolarization parameter. As an experimental result, the depolarization parameter increased with decreasing pigment size. Therefore, a smaller pigment size can reduce light leakage caused by light scattering in the color filter between two crossed polarizers. The depolarization function was also proposed as a useful function for predicting the decrease in the contrast ratio of the color filter.
Twin target sputtering (TTS) system with a configuration of vertically parallel facing Al targets and a substrate holder perpendicular to the Al target plane has been designed to realize a direct Al cathode sputtering on organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). The TTS system has a linear twin target gun with ladder type magnet array for effective and uniform confinement of high density plasma. It is shown that OLEDs with Al cathode deposited by the TTS show a relatvely lower leakage current density $({\sim}1{\times}10^{-5}mA/cm^2)$ at reverse bias of -6V, compared to that ($1{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}10^{-3}$$mA/cm^2$ at -6V) of OLEDs with Al cathodes grown by conventional DC magnetron sputtering. In addition, it was found that Al cathode films prepared by TTS were amorphous structure with nanocrystallines due to low substrate temperature. This demonstrates that there is no plasma damage caused by the bombardment of energetic particles. This indicates that the TTS system with ladder type magnet array could be useful plasma damage free deposition technique for direct Al cathode sputtering on OLEDs or flexible OLEDs.

We have investigated about compensation film to reduce the light leakage at an oblique angle in-plane switching mode. It is well known that uncompensated in-plane switching (US) and fringe field switching (FFS) liquid crystal displays (LCDs) have much better viewing angle than other modes owing to the in-plane rotation of the LC director. However, to accomplish optimal viewing angle characteristics in these devices, they must be compensated by one or more films. So, in this paper, we have studied how to reduce the light leakage with viewing angle using discotic film in dark state.
