  • In this paper we propose a method to analyze the nonlinear behavior of an integrated-mirror etalon by the characteristic matrix method. If the dependence of the refractive index and the absorption coefficient upon the light intensity are known, we can couple this with an equation by which we can evaluate the light intensity distribution inside an etalon for the given values of the refractive index and the absorption coefficient. By solving these coupled equations by the iteration method, we evaluate the transmission characteristics of a nonlinear integrated-mirror etalon. By the characteristic matrix method, we have demonstrated the static and dynamic bistable behavior of a nonlinear integrated-mirror etalon.

  • The characteristics of spray nozzle have been quantified with the measurement of fluorescence and Mie scattering images. To correct the attenuation of the incident light sheet, a sequential double-pass light sheet system and the geometrical averaging of two images was implemented. Quantitative mass flux distribution of spray was obtained from fluorescence image. 3-D image is reconstructed using 2-D radial images. Sauter mean diameter (SMD) distribution was determined using the ratio of fluorescence signal intensity and Mie scattering signal intensity and the values were quantified with PDP A data. The measurement of mass flux and SMD using planar imaging technique agee with PDP A data fairly well in the low density region. However, in dense region, there are significant errors caused by secondary scattering. It was found that the planar imaging technique provides many advantages over the point measurement technique, such as PDP A, and can be implemented for quantitative measurement, especially in low density region.

  • In exhibition spaces such as art museums, lighting should primarily illuminate the walls where exhibits are displayed rather than the floor. Commonly used LED lighting consists of an LED and a diffusion plate that closely resembles a Lambertian light source with uniform light distribution at every angle. This type of illumination focuses on the floor surface where normal incidence occurs. Consequently, this general illumination method is not well-suited for effectively lighting the wall surface. Specifically, to illuminate a wall, it is necessary to increase the light intensity in areas with a large incident angle in the light distribution. In response to this issue, our study proposes an illumination system that uses an ultra wide converter to adjust the divergence angle from the light source to 180 degrees.

  • We measured 3-dimensional images of the light emitted from plasma display panel(PDP) by using newly proposed scanned point detecting method(SPDM). The SPDM has the point detector with pinhole. The light emitted from PDP cell at the in-focus position can pass through the pinhole and be collected by detector. On the contrary, the light emitted from PDP cell at the out-of-focus positions is focused on the front of or the behind of the pinhole. We could analyze the characteristic of 3-dimensional light emission distribution by SPDM. From 3-dimensional measurement of 828[nm], the efficient design of PDP cell, the importance of opening ration, and the relations between BUS electrode position and discharge intensity are obtained. Also, the relationship between discharge characteristics and sustain electrode structures in AC-PDP are studied by measuring luminance, current, and discharge voltage.

  • We analyzed the 3-dimensional discharge characteristic in plasma display panel(PDP) cell using the 3-dimensional emission distribution of 828nm light measured by scanned point detecting method(SPDM). The emitted light distributions on the ITO electrode show the stronger light intensity near to the electrode gap than outside. Also, 828nm light is widely detected outside of the bus electrode. We consider that measurement using new SPDM is effective to analyze the discharge physics and propose the new panel structures.

  • Quantitative analysis of optical scattering intensities from a Au nanoparticle with a diameter of 100 nm, which is effected by the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), were numerically carried out by using a dark-field detection scheme on prism basal plane for two different beam incident modes of reflectance (R-mode) and transmittance (T-mode). Two-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) algorithm was adopted, and its applicabilibility was verified by comparing the simulation results with the theoretical ones. Simulation results of the scattered light intensities from a Au nanoparticle revealed that the scattered intensity of the T-mode was much stronger than that of R-mode. Comparison of the calculated results with the theoretical intensity distribution on the prism showed that the scattered intensity is marimized when the evanescent field, which is generated from the interface of prism and air at TIR angle, is coupled with Au nanoparticle.

  • Plant factories with artificial lights require a large amount of electrical energy for lighting; therefore, enhancement of light use efficiency will decrease the cost of plant production. The objective of this study was to enhance the light use efficiency by using filters to diffuse the light from LED sources in plant factory conditions. The two treatments used diffuse glasses with haze factors of 40% and 80%, and a control without the filter. For each treatment, canopy light distribution was evaluated by a 3-D ray tracing method and canopy photosynthesis was measured with a sealed acrylic chamber. Sixteen lettuces for each treatment were cultivated hydroponically in a plant factory for 28 days after transplanting and their growth was compared. Simulation results showed that the light absorption was concentrated on the upper part of the lettuce canopy in treatments and control. The control showed particularly poor canopy light distribution with hotspots of light intensity; thus the light use efficiency decreased compared to the treatments. Total light absorption was the highest in the control; however, the amount of effective light absorption was higher in treatments than the control, and was highest in treatment using filters with a haze factor of 80%. Canopy photosynthesis and plant growth were significantly higher in all the treatments. In conclusion, application of the diffuse glass filters enhanced the canopy light distribution, photosynthesis, and growth of the plants under LED lighting, resulting in enhanced the light use efficiency in plant factory conditions.

  • It is important to control the beam pattern of an LED by the design of a reflector. The optimum conditions of the structure parameters for the 2 segment LED reflector are analyzed and compared as they vary depending on the various intensity distributions of light output on the LED chip surface. It is also interesting that combining various types of reflectors is possible to give several efficient beam patterns, such as the maximum intensity profile or relatively wide controllability of beam angle.

  • To understand the growth pattern of ginseng plant under shading, the vertical distribution of leaf area, leaf area index (LAI) and specific leaf weight (SLW) and changes in light intensity as affected by planting position were investigated in 3 to 5 years old ginseng plant populations. Light intensity was vertically lowest at about 10cm above the ground and became low at the rear planting position in 3-year-old population. When culturing bed (96cm in width) were divided into three parts at intervals of 32cm from front to rear, the leaf area in 3-year-old population was largest in middle 1/3 part of planting bed. Light intensity affected the SLW positively, but LAI showed no distinct difference among planting positions. The light environment of 4-year-old population was worse than that of 3-year-old population and leaf area and LAI differed greatly among planting positions. In 5-year-old population, leaf dry weight and leaf area of furrow part (that is, the amount of leaves protruded from the plants which were planted in 1st, 2nd or 3rd lines into the furrow) increased. The dry weights of leaves and stem increased considerably as plant became aged, and were distributed mainly in upper layer.
