Currently, the National Forest Inventory (NFI) collects tree information by human, so the range and time of the survey are limited. Research is actively being conducted to extract tree information from a large area using aerial Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and aerial photographs, but it does not reflect the characteristics of forest areas in Korea because it is conducted in areas with wide tree spacing or evenly spaced trees. Therefore, this study proposed a methodology for generating Digital Surface Model (DSM), Digital Elevation Model (DEM), and Canopy Height Model (CHM) images using aerial LiDAR, extracting the tree height through the local Maxima, and calculating the Diameter at Breath Height (DBH) through the DBH-tree height formula. The detection accuracy of trees extracted through the proposed methodology was 88.46%, 86.14%, and 84.31%, respectively, and the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of DBH calculated based on the tree height formula was around 5cm, confirming the possibility of using the proposed methodology. It is believed that if standardized research on various types of forests is conducted in the future, the scope of automation application of the manual national forest resource survey can be expanded.

To monitor the safety and serviceability of a structures, structural responses including displacements due to various design and unexpected loadings must be measured. The maximum displacement and its distributions of a structure can be used as a direct assessment index on its stiffness. For this reason, there have been diversely studied on measuring of the maximum displacement of a structure. However, there is no practical method for measuring displacement of a structure. Therefore, in this paper, new displacement measuring method is developed and accuracy of LiDAR is examined in detail for development of a new method for measuring displacement of a structure.

지상 LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging)는 정밀하고 빠르게 물체의 3차원 형상을 측량할 수 있는 시스템이다.

In order to construct 3D geospatial information about the terrain, current measurement using a total station, remote sensing, GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System) have been used. However, ground survey and GNSS survey have time and economic disadvantages because they have to be surveyed directly in the field. In case of using aerial photographs and satellite images, these methods have the disadvantage that it is difficult to obtain the three-dimensional shape of the terrain. The terrestrial LiDAR can acquire 3D information of X, Y, Z coordinate and shape obtained by scanning innumerable laser pulses at densely spaced intervals on the surface of the object to be observed at high density, and the processing can also be automated. In this study, terrestrial LiDAR was used to analyze slope displacement. Study area slopes were selected and data were acquired using LiDAR in 2016 and 2017. Data processing has been used to generate slope cross section and slope data, and the overlay analysis of the generated data identifies slope displacements within 0.1 m and suggests the possibility of using slope LiDAR on land to manage slopes. If periodic data acquisition and analysis is performed in the future, the method using the terrestrial lidar will contribute to effective risk slope management.
Digital topographic map in Korea contains layers of spatial and attribute data for 8 land features such as railroads, watercourses, roads, buildings and etc. Some of the layers such as building and forest don't include any information about height, which can be just prepared by interpretation of remote sensed data or field survey. LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) data using active pulse and digital camera provides data about height and form of land features. LiDAR data can be used not only to extract the outline of land features but also to estimate the height. This study presents technical availability for extraction and estimation of land feature's outline and height using LiDAR data which composes of natural and artificial land features, and digital aerial photograph which was taken simultaneously with the LiDAR. The estimated location, outline and height of land features were compared with the field survey data, and we could find that LiDAR data and digital aerial photograph can be a useful source for estimating the height of land features as well as extracting the outline.
Recently, accidents caused by black ice, a road freezing phenomenon caused by natural power, are increasing. Black ice is difficult to identify directly with the human eye and is more likely to misunderstand it as standing water, so there is a high accident rate caused by car sliding. To solve this problem, this paper presents a method of detecting black ice centered on LiDAR sensors. With a small, inexpensive, and high-accuracy light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor, the temperature and inclination angle are set differently to detect black ice and asphalt by setting different reflection angles of asphalt and black ice differently in temperatures and inclinations. The LIDARO carried out in the study points out that additional research and improvement are needed to increase accuracy, and through this, more reliable black ice detection methods can be suggested. This method suggests a method of detecting black ice through early system design research by preventing accidents caused by black ice in advance.

Segmentation and organization of the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data of the Earth's surface are difficult tasks because the captured LiDAR data are composed of irregularly distributed point clouds with lack of semantic information. The reason for this difficulty in processing LiDAR data is that the data provide huge amount of the spatial coordinates without topological and/or relational information among the points. This study introduces LiDAR data segmentation technique by utilizing histograms of the LiDAR height image data and analyzing roof shape for 3D reconstruction and visualization of the buildings. One of the advantages in utilizing LiDAR height image data is no registration required because the LiDAR data are geo-referenced and ortho-projected data. In consequence, measurements on the image provide absolute reference coordinates. The LiDAR image allows measurement of the initial building boundaries to estimate locations of the side walls and to form the planar surfaces which represent approximate building footprints. LiDAR points close to each side wall were grouped together then the least-square planar surface fitting with the segmented point clouds was performed to determine precise location of each wall of an building. Finally, roof shape analysis was performed by accumulated slopes along the profiles of the roof top. However, simulated LiDAR data were used for analyzing roof shape because buildings with various shapes of the roof do not exist in the test area. The proposed approach has been tested on the heavily built-up urban residential area. 3D digital vector map produced by digitizing complied aerial photographs was used to evaluate accuracy of the results. Experimental results show efficiency of the proposed methodology for 3D building reconstruction and large scale digital mapping especially for the urban area.
Mobile robots are used in modern life; however, object recognition is still insufficient to realize robot navigation in crowded environments. Mobile robots must rapidly and accurately recognize the movements and shapes of pedestrians to navigate safely in pedestrian-rich spaces. This study proposes real-time, accurate, three-dimensional (3D) multi-pedestrian detection and tracking using a 3D light detection and ranging (LiDAR) point cloud in crowded environments. The pedestrian detection quickly segments a sparse 3D point cloud into individual pedestrians using a lightweight convolutional autoencoder and connected-component algorithm. The multi-pedestrian tracking identifies the same pedestrians considering motion and appearance cues in continuing frames. In addition, it estimates pedestrians' dynamic movements with various patterns by adaptively mixing heterogeneous motion models. We evaluate the computational speed and accuracy of each module using the KITTI dataset. We demonstrate that our integrated system, which rapidly and accurately recognizes pedestrian movement and appearance using a sparse 3D LiDAR, is applicable for robot navigation in crowded spaces.
This study : An analysis of position accuracy of topography according to using LiDAR data, aerial photo and digital map for a study area was conducted. The study area was selected in Hadan area, Sahagu, Busan aerial LiDAR data and aerial photo in the scales of 1:20,000, which are high tech surveying ways were used. The final digital orthoimage according to orientation process for each image and image resampling was producted. Using it, a checkpoint was chosen, information about the checkpoints selected was extracted, a coordinate of Horizontal Position through the screen digitizing was also extracted. Both the coordinates of LiDAR data and aerial photo using digital map in the scales of 1:20,000 announced to the public from NGII(National Geographic Information Institute) were gradually compared and analyzed. Based on the digital map, as a result of being both compared and analyzed, it has shown to us that horizontal position of aerial photo is more accurate than that of aerial LiDAR surveying (RMSE-building x:24cm, y:26cm).
Coastal areas, used as human utilization areas like leisure space, medical care, ports and power plants, etc., are regions that are continuously changing and interconnected with oceans and land. Regular monitoring of coastal changes is essential at key locations with such volatility. But the survey method of terrestial LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) system has much time consuming and many restrictions. For effective monitoring coastal changes, KIOST(Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology) has constructed a shipborne mobile LiDAR system. The shipborne mobile LiDAR system, installed in a research vessel, comprised a land based LiDAR(RIEGL LMS-420i), an IMU(MAGUS Inertial+), a RTKGNSS(LEICA GS15 GS25), and a fixed platform. The shipborne mobile LiDAR system is much more effective than a land based LiDAR system in the measuring of fore shore areas without shadow zone. Because the vessel with the shipborne mobile LiDAR system is continuously moved along the shoreline, it is possible to efficiently survey a large area in a relatively short time. We conducted test measurements in the Anmok-Songjung beach around the Gangneung port. Effective monitoring of the changes using the constructed shipborne mobile LiDAR system for seriously eroded coastal areas will be able to contribute to coastal erosion management and response.
