Laminar flows over a cube and a cuboid (cube extended in the streamwise direction) are numerically investigated for the Reynolds numbers between 50 and 350. First, vortical structures behind a cube and lift characteristics are scrutinized in order to understand the variation in vortex shedding characteristics with respect to the Reynolds number. As the Reynolds number increases, the flow over a cube experiences the steady planar-symmetric, unsteady planar-symmetric, and unsteady asymmetric flows. Similar to the sphere wake, the planar-symmetric flow over a cube can be divided into two different regimes: single-frequency regime and multiple-frequency regime. The former has a single frequency due to regular shedding of vortices with the same strength in time, while the latter has multiple frequency components due to temporal variation in the strength of shed vortices. Second, the effect of the length-to-height ratio of the cuboid on the flow characteristics is investigated for the Reynolds number of 270, at which planar-symmetric vortex shedding takes place behind a cube. With the ratio smaller than one, the flow over the cuboid becomes unsteady asymmetric flow, whereas it becomes steady flow for the ratios greater than one. With increasing the ratio, the drag coefficient first decreases and then increases. This feature is related to the flow reattachment on the side faces of the cuboid.
The noise sources from a rotating cylinder were identified to describe the blunt trailing edge noise. Firstly, LES formulation was applied to a non-orthogonal grid system and was tested with three-dimensional cross-flow over a cylinder with a yaw angle. The computed far-field noise showed peaks at Strouhal numbers ranging from 0.135 to 0.165 for the yawed cylinder flow with end-plates placed at both extremes under the yaw angle of $30^{\circ}$ and Reynolds number of $1.15{\times}10^4$. It was observed that the slantwise shedding at angles other than the cylinder yaw angle is intrinsic to inclined cylinder, with the result of shedding angles between $15^{\circ}$ and $31^{\circ}$. To study the trailing-edge wake thickness and unsteady lift-coefficient distribution in the span-wise direction of a rotating fan blade, the flows around rotating cylinder with 1,000 rpm were simulated and the far-field noise was exactly computed using the Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings equation with quadrupole source term. The incoming velocities and stagnant zones were continuously distributed along the cylinder, and their changes made the Strouhal sheddings to occur at different phases even at almost same Strouhal number.
This paper is concerned with the viscous interaction between rotor and stator. The viscous interaction is caused by wakes from upstream blades. The rotor cascade in the experiment was composed with five blades, and cylinders were placed to make the stator wakes and their locations were about 50 percent upstream of blade chord. The locations of cylinders were varied in the direction of cascade axis with 0, 12.5, 25, 50, and 75 percent of pitch length. The static pressure distributions on the blade surfaces and the velocity distributions in the cascade flow were measured. From the experimental result it was found that the value of velocity defect by a cylinder wake might vary depending on the wake position within the cascade but the value at the cascade exit approached to some constant value regardless of the difference of wake locus. The momentum defect at the downstream from the cascade and the pressure distribution on the blade surfaces showed that the wake flowing near the blade surfaces caused the decrease of lift and the increase of drag regardless of the disappearance of flow separation.
This paper presents a parallel typed walking robot which can walk in omni-direction and climb from a floor to a wall. We design a six D.O.F leg mechanism composed of three legs, which form a parallel mechanism with a base and a ground to generate arbitrary poses. Optimal design is conducted to maximize the walking space and the dexterity, which are normalized by the stroke of leg. Kinematic parameters are found to maximize the weighted optimal objectives. We design a triple parallel mechanism robot by inserting Stewart platform between the upper leg mechanism and the lower leg mechanism and examine the gaits when the robot walks on the ground and climbs from a floor to a wall. The analysis of walking space and dexterity for each gait shows that the triple parallel walking robot has a large walking space with a large stability region. We explore the possibility that the robot can climb from a floor to a wall. Investigating the gaits for the six steps proves that the robot can lift the foot up to the wall by combining the orientational walking space generated by three parallel mechanisms.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to investigate the stresses of the middle slab in a double-deck tunnel owing to the slab lift to replace the underlying elastic pads during maintenance work. METHODS : The middle slab was divided into three different sections: typical section, expansion joint section, and emergency passageway section. Finite element analysis models of these three sections of middle slab were developed, and the stress distribution and maximum stresses were obtained using the models when the middle slab was lifted to replace the underlying elastic pads. Various slab lifting methods were examined in this study such as one-, two-, and multiple-point lifts, distributed lifts, and one or both slab side edge lifts. RESULTS : When the slab side edge is lifted, the longitudinal stresses of the slab are almost the same as the principal stresses. This implies that the governing stresses are the longitudinal stresses. The maximum stresses with both-edge lifts are generally smaller than those with one-edge lifts at all three sections of middle slab. CONCLUSIONS : If the middle slab in a double-deck tunnel is lifted for maintenance, the slab should be lifted at multiple points along the longitudinal direction to reduce the tensile stresses.
Traditional methods of research on ship maneuvering performance were estimated in calm water. Ship maneuverability in waves is of vital importance for navigation safety of a ship (ITTC, 2008). The accurate estimation of force and moment acting on the ship and rudder behind propeller are necessary because the rudder, propeller and hull interaction is of key importance. In addition, course-keeping ability and maneuvering performance of a ship can be significantly affected by the presence of wave. In this study, the model test is performed in the regular wave in the square wave tank in Changwon National University and the hydrodynamic force acting on the ship hull and rudder behind the propeller in various wave directions is investigated. The effect of wavelength and wave direction on hydrodynamic force acting on ship and rudder behind propeller in regular waves is discussed.
Large-sized pins are usually used to lift and handle large low speed diesel engine crankshaft. There has then been a need to reduce and optimize the weight of the traditionally used pins. Making an hole by cutting the inside of the pin out was investigated in view of static and fracture strength. To compensate the stress increase caused by the introduction of the inner hole, the groove in the circumferential direction pre-existing on the pin is to be removed. Finite element analysis was carried out for both the original model and weight reduced model. Stress intensity factors for semi-elliptical defects assumed on the pin for the original model and weight reduced model was calculated using the ASME method and compared with the fracture toughness test result of the pin material. The diameter of the cutting hole for the revised model was determined based on the analysis results.
A Computational code has been developed in order to design axial fans by the numerical optimization techniques incorporated with flow analysis code solving three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation. The steepest descent method and the conjugate gradient method are used to look for the search direction in the design space, and the golden section method is used for one-dimensional search. To solve the constrained optimization problem, sequential unconstrained minimization technique, SUMT, is used with imposed quadratic extended interior penalty functions. In the optimization of two-dimensional cascade design, the ratio of drag coefficient to lift coefficient is minimized by the design variables such as maximum thickness, maximum ordinate of camber and chord wise position of maximum ordinate. In the application of this numerical optimization technique to the design of an axial fan, the efficiency is maximized by the design variables related to the sweep angle distributed by quadratic function along the hub to tip of fan.
The shape of a yacht sail made of thin fabric materials is easily deformed by wind speed and direction and it is affected by the deformation of the standing rig such as mast, boom, shrouds, stays and spreaders. This deformed sail shape changes the air flow over the sail, it makes the deformation of the sail and the rig again. To get a sail performance accurately these interactive behavior of sail system should be studied in aspects of the aerodynamics and the fluid-structure interaction. In this study aerodynamic analysis for the sail system of a 30 feet sloop is carried out and the obtained dynamic pressure on the sail surface is applied as the loading condition of the calculation to get the deformations of the sail shape and the rig. Supporting forces by rig are applied as boundary condition of the structure deformation calculations. And the characteristics of the air flow and the dynamic pressure over the deformed sail shape is investigated repeatedly including the lift force and the location of CE.
Eutrophic matters accumulated on the bottom of sea, river and lake cause red tide phenomenon in ocean and outbreak green algae in river and lake. Systems are developed to remove the noxious deposit. But the existing systems remove not only the eutrophic matters but also natural materials, sand, pebbles etc. that should remain at the bottom. This paper describes a new system that can safely, and economically take away the noxious deposit in underwater. High pressure water jet is used to induce vortices in the triangular suction section, and air-lifting pump to lift up the deposit. The mixture of the water and deposit is filtered through the drum filters. An under camera shows the under water situation along the moving direction of the system that is controlled by a remote operator. This remote controlled moving system obliterate the necessity of the diver that usually costs high. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the suggested system.
