In Korea, a movement for forming intentional communities is gathering people's interests to improve individualistic living environment, and to create a humanistic lifestyle. However, it is difficult to say if its management is successful or not, because intentional community is just in the experimental stage in Korea. The purpose of this study is to identify actual condition of residents' participation in forming process, shared activities in their daily lives, residents' regulation, common facilities and its management in order to offer basic information for revitalization of intentional communities in Korea. 7 intentional communities including eco-friendly villages, religious communities and a cooperative housing community were collected as the study objects. Upon analysis, those communities were divided into two groups according to their purpose of establishment; "HC (Housing-life focused Community includes cooperative housing community and eco-friendly community)" and "IC (Ideology focused Community includes ideology community and religious community)" in order to identify difference in residents' participation between the two groups. In-dept interviews with representatives of 7 intentional communities by a structured questionnaire were used as study method. The findings of this study are as follows; In general, more active residents' participation is identified in ICs than in HCs. There is no common house, which is considered as essential in intentional community, in HCs, while it was facilitated in all ICs. Role of leader seems more important in ICs than in HCs. About the ownership of housing and land, private owned is common in HCs, while community owned is common in ICs. Shared activities and residents' regulations are evidently less in most HCs than in ICs. Furthermore, in order to run a community sustainable, it is crucial to encourage sense of community among residents, and developing common house and activity programs. Common house design, which can promote proactive residents' participation in shared activity should be studied fitted to Korean circumstances. Above all, proactive participation in the shared activities is one of the most important factors in intentional community.
The purpose of this research was to reduce the burden of household management and the difficulty of rearing children, which are two most important obstacles for a dual-income family. For this, we suggested a cohousing project, as an alternative concept to conventional housing, where people can socially interact with each other and share mutual cooperation for a better quality of life. We surveyed the lifestyle of dual-income families in Korea, how they understood the cohousing project and their opinions on it. We carried out a survey with the wives from dual income families who were living in the metropolitan areas including Seoul. We contacted 30 wives for the survey to determine the reality of the double income couple family and interviewed them to make a detailed plan for cohousing based on their understanding and needs. In the results, many women who responded to the interview agreed that cohousing was an ideal housing arrangement for the dual-income family. However, they were anxious that it would take too much time and effort to develop their own housing estate by themselves. Therefore, we looked for a way to save time, efforts and cost in developing a cohousing project and came up with the remodeling as a solution.

The demand for small-sized housing has been increasing due to the recession of real-estate price and the increase of small-sized households. Especially, the demand for affordable housing has been increasing since the style of housing and the location fits the lifestyle of small-sized household. In addition, many investors have been buying it because it has advertised as an investment property holding high-return ratio. However, an empirical analysis about the selling price and the return ratio has not been done yet. Therefore, the purpose of the research is having the empirical analysis based on the selling price and return ration by examining the affordable housing in Seoul. The urban-life housing more than 50 generations of the Seoul was irradiated for the analysis. And the linear regression analysis and PLS(Partial Least Square Regression) analysis was used for the empirical analysis. The result of analysis, based on the linear regression analysis, showed that factors including neighboring housing price and subway catchment area have a significant effect to the determinant factors of housing price. The analysis for return ratio showed neighboring housing price, subway catchment area and amenities affects the ratio. Especially, the fault of using small sample was covered by using the partial least square regression in this research.
The purpose of this research lies in providing basic data for appropriate territorial adjustment within the family by understanding the relation to family members and how 'territorial dislocations' caused by differences in personal space and behavioral domains are used and controlled as living elements. As a result, the following data could be obtained. 1. General usage conditions of living elements. When the order of usage conditions of living elements is reviewed, the living elements interspersed at the personal space and behavioral territory in public and private spaces show a high usage rate, and in the case where living elements are shared with other families, many living elements are controlled by each family. Also, for living elements with a high possibility of sharing, a high consciousness for public usage is shown rather than elements controlling the territory, and the usage rate as territory controlling living elements is not high. 2. Compared to Japan, in Korea elements that can be placed at a certain location are often used as elements that resolve 'territorial dislocation', using furniture rather than objects. On the other hand, in Japan 'territorial dislocation' is often resolved by establishing a personal territory within the living space. Lastly, compared to Japan, in Korea 'territorial dislocation' is often resolved by maintaining a personal territory spatially rather than territorially.
As a neighboring country belonged to the same cultural sphere with the Northeast Asia, China is recently emerging as a center of the world's economy. The social transformations caused by the rapid economic growth are bringing changes in the Chinese housing culture and thus, it is considered that the identification of a user's need concerning a new housing space and social and cultural understanding on China are necessary. Accordingly, this research intended to conduct the basic research on the Chinese housing space design by observing the small apartment users in Shanghai area in terms of not only the tangible element of the residential space type but also the intangible elements such as lifestyle, values, behaviors, etc. The research range was limited to the kitchen area at the center of a house as a place where the exchanges among the family members are most frequently occur, and the research was carried out in the following methods. First, the effective user research method for the analysis of the Chinese small apartment kitchen users was studied through the literature investigation. Second, the 6 families of a research target were selected focused on the small apartments in Shanghai, China and the user research was performed using three methods of User observation, Video ethnography, and Contextual inquiry. Third, the research results were analyzed focused on the flow of human traffic in the kitchen area and user's behaviors. What were identified as a result take account of the human traffic movements in the kitchen areas around the sink-counter-cook top, cooking behaviors and meal areas outside of the kitchen. Through this, the need for the effective organization of the sink-counter-cook top, arrangement of meal area, and placement of storage by section for the kitchen space of China were drawn based on the understanding of the cooking process, and it was identified that such results require comprehensive understanding of Chinese housing culture.
The aim of this study is to understand the modernization process of interior spaces in the Korean housing, focused not only on the architectural aspects, but also on the sociological, anthropological and feministic aspects of housing. The development of korean housing from the period of traditional agricultural society and Japanese domination through the period of industrial development to the period of modem industrial society have been reviewed not from the Point of westernization but from the point of Korean own needs for modernity. It also tried to find the determinants of the relationship between social behavior patterns and space organization through historical change of housing plans. As a result, it was found the various western impacts to the continuation or change of Korean housing culture in the modernization process. Consequently this study comes to the concrete results as follows; 1) sociological aspect: The early layout of floorplans, that promoted the communication and contact between the user were changed. The layout of spaces in the modern housing tends to be not interdependence each other and be very isolated from the outdoor spaces. Those Phenomena reflect the trends to the Individualization, equivalence and privatization in the life of family. 2) feministic aspects: Differently from the early kitchen, modern ones locates in the internal space in the housing and the dinning area is appeared. And also the standing work at the kitchen war usually spreaded. Such changes are due to the emancipation of the women and downfall of the subordinate relationship between the genders. 3) anthropological aspects: The lifestyle, in which the user was mostly sitting on the floor, was constantly disappeared by using of furnitures that determines the function of each spaces in the housing. Those change demonstrate the change of behavior Patterns, thus, the needs of differentiation of function as well as the feministic needs. In other word, the coexistence of both fields of work and relax is required. 4) tectonic aspects: In the indoor space of modern housing the rooms are closed each other. Thus, concentrated circulation system act to separate these spaces. It is concrete spatial element that mostly shows the synthetic character of modem housing.
Since modernization period thru Japanese colonial era the modern architect began to play a important role for Korean housing architecture. So called 'House as an Art Work', detached houses by prominent architects, belong to a meaningful sector in Korean modern housing architecture. The harmony with tradition was always big issue for such works. This study aims to understand how paradigms for tradition were interpreted with the changes of the time. The analysis showed various tryout by architects, that concretize traditional characteristics in their work. For example, traditional lifestyle were clearly reflected in the floorplan during 30's and 40's. In the 70's building mass and formative roof design were emphasized to present traditional image. As well as it represented primitive esthetic and vernacular decoration. In addition, expressive tendency, that demonstrates korean sentiment through material and its texture, got a preference. Since latter half of 80's some traditional architectural elements were modernized and space characteristics were newly created from acculturation. Furthermore the philosophy of "Subdivision of building wings and Emptiness" follows this trend. This type made a courtyard and connected articulated building masses each other. "Sympathy with Nature" were most essential for a traditional houses in contrast with western architecture. Many architects today make various method to bring nature into interior space and to contemplate nature In the house. Such kinds of adaptation to tradition could be understood as a unique process to manifest identity of Korean modern houses.
