  • This paper describes an equalizer using the DFE (Decision Feedback Equalizer) structure, CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) and LMS (Least Mean Square) algorithms. The DFE structure has better channel adaptive performance and lower BER than the transversal structure. The proposed equalizer can be used for 16/64 QAM modems. We employ high speed multipliers, square logics and many CSAs (Carry Save Adder) for high speed operations. We have developed floating-point models and fixed-point models using the COSSAP$\^$TM/ CAD tool and developed VHDL filter. The proposed equalizer shows low BER in multipath fading channel. We have performed models. From the simulation results, we employ a 12 tap feedback filter and a 8 tap feedforward logic synthesis using the SYNOPSYS$\^$TM/ CAD tool and the SAMSUNG 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ standard cell library (STD80) and verified function and timing simulations. The total number of gates is about 130,000.

  • In this paper, millimeter-wave monolithic integrated circuit(MIMIC) low noise amplifier(LNA) for V-band, which is applicable to 60 GHz wireless local area network(WLAN), was fabricated using the high performance 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ $\Gamma$-gate pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor(PHEMT). The DC characteristics of PHEMT are drain saturation current density(Idss) of 450 mA/mm and maximum transconductance(gm, max) of 363.6 mS/mm. The RF characteristics were obtained the current gain cut-off frequency(fT) of 113 GHz and the maximum oscillation frequency(fmax) of 180 GHz. V-band MIMIC LNA was designed using active and passive device library, which is composed of 0.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ $\Gamma$-gate PHEMT and coplanar waveguide(CPW) technology. The designed V-band MIMIC LNA was fabricated using integrated unit processes of active and passive device. The measured results of V-band MIMIC LNA are shown S21 gain of 21.3 dB, S11 of -10.6 dB at 60 GHz and S22 of -29.7 dB at 62.5 GHz. The measured result of V-band MIMIC LNA was shown noise figure (NF) of 4.23 dB at 60 GHz.

  • Many gravitational wave detectors are now being built or under operation throughout the world. In particular, LIGO has taken scientific data several times, although current sensitivity is not sufficient to detect the weak signals routinely. However, the sensitivities have been improving steadily over past years so that the real detection will take place in the near future. Data analysis is another important area in detecting the gravitational wave signal. We have carried out the basic research in order to implement data analysis software in Korea@home environment. We first studied the LIGO Science Collaboration Algorithm Library(LAL) software package, and extracted the module that can generate the virtual data of gravitational wave detector. Since burst sources such as merging binaries of neutron stars and black holes are likely to be detected first, we have concentrated on the simulation of such signals. This module can generate pure gravitational wave forms, noise suitable for LIGO, and combination of the signal and noise. In order to detect the gravitational signal embedded in the noisy data, we have written a simple program that employs 'matched filtering' method which is very effective in detecting the signal with known waveform. We found that this method works extremely well.

  • An 8192-point pipelined FFT/IFFT processor core is designed, which can be used in multi-carrier modulation systems such as DUf-based VDSL modem and OFDM-based DVB system. In order to improve the signal-to-quantization-noise ratio (SQNR) of FFT/IFFT results, two-step convergent block floating-point (TS_CBFP) scaling is employed. Since the proposed TS_CBFP scaling does not require additional buffer memory, it reduces memory as much as about 80% when compared with conventional CBFP methods, resulting in area-and power-efficient implementation. The SQNR of about 60-㏈ is achieved with 10-bit input, 14-bit internal data and twiddle factors, and 16-bit output. The core synthesized using 0.25-$\mu\textrm{m}$ CMOS library has about 76,300 gates, 390K bits RAM, and twiddle factor ROM of 39K bits. Simulation results show that it can safely operate up to 50-㎒ clock frequency at 2.5-V supply, resulting that a 8192-point FFT/IFFT can be computed every 164-${\mu}\textrm{s}$. It was verified by Xilinx FPGA implementation.

  • We present high-resolution near-infrared host galaxy spectra of low-z quasars, PG0844+349 (z=0.064), PG1226+023 (z=0.158), and PG1426+015 (z=0.086). The observation was done by using the near-IR high resolution echelle spectrometer, IRCS, at the SUBARU 8.2 m telescope. The full width at half maximum of the point spread function was about 0.3 arcsec by using an Adaptive Optics system, which can effectively resolve the quasar spectra from the host galaxy spectra. The signal-to-noise ratios are increased by the total exposure time up to several hours per targets and the development of data reduction method. We compare our results to the stellar spectra library and sample spectra from Dasyra et al. (2007) and Watson et al. (2008). The identified spectral lines will be used to study the physical mechanism of quasars, and the velocity dispersions of the stars in the bulge of the host galaxy.

  • With the increased use of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) that can obtain over millions of point dataset, methodologies for efficient search and dimensionality reduction for the point cloud became a crucial technique. The existing octree-based "parametric algorithm" has proved its efficiency and contributed as a part of PCL (Point Cloud Library). However, the implementation of the algorithm on GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is considered very difficult because of structural constraints of the octree implemented in PCL. In this paper, we present a method for the parametric algorithm on GPU environment and implement a projection of the queried points on four directions with an improved noise reduction.

  • This paper presents new LVDS I/O circuits with a high noise margin for use in highly parallel I/O environments. The proposed LVDS I/O includes transmitter and receiver parts. The transmitter circuits consist of a differential phase splitter and a output stage with common mode feedback(CMFB). The differential phase splitter generates a pair of differential signals which have a balanced duty cycle and $180^{\circ}$ phase difference over a wide supply voltage variation due to SSO(simultaneous switching output) noises. The CMFB output stage produces the required constant output current and maintains the required VCM(common mode voltage) within ${\pm}$0.1V tolerance without external circuits in a SSO environment. The proposed receiver circuits in this paper utilizes a three-stage structure(single-ended differential amp., common source amp., output stage) to accurately receive high-speed signals. The receiver part employs a very wide common mode input range differential amplifier(VCDA). As a result, the receiver improves the immunities for the common mode noise and for the supply voltage difference, represented by Vgdp, between the transmitter and receiver sides. Also, the receiver produces a rail-to-rail, full swing output voltage with a balanced duty cycle(50% ${\pm}$ 3%) without external circuits in a SSO environment, which enables correct data recovery. The proposed LVDS I/O circuits have been designed and simulated with 0.18um TSMC library using H-SPICE.

  • PLLs have been widely used for many applications including communication systems. This paper presents a VCO with an improved negative skewed delay scheme and a PLL using this VCO. The proposed VCO and PLL are intended for replacing traditional LC oscillators and PLLs used in communication systems and other applications. The circuit designs of the VCO and PLL are based on 0.18um CMOS technology with 1.8V supply voltage. The proposed VCO employs subfeedback loops using pass-transistors and needs two opposite control voltages for the pass transistors. The subfeedback loops speed up oscillation depending on the control voltages and thus provide a high oscillation frequency. The two voltage controls have opposite frequency gain characteristics and result in low phase-noise. The 7-stage VCO in 0.18um CMOS technology operates from $3.2GHz\~6.3GHz$ with phase noise of about -128.8 dBc/Hz at 1MHz frequency onset. For 1.8V supply voltage, the current consumption is about 3.8mA. The proposed PLL has dual loop-filters for the proposed VCO. The PLL is operated at 5GHz with 1.8V supply voltage. These results indicate that the proposed VCO can be used for radio frequency operations replacing LC oscillators. The circuits have been designed and simulated using 0.18um TSMC library.
