  • The purpose of this study is to explore the concept, contents, and curriculum of MIL(Media and Information Literacy) proposed by UNESCO from the perspective of Library and Information Science to obtain the basic information necessary for the revision of the Library and Information Life curriculum and to derive implications. As a result of the analysis, UNESCO used the term MIL to highlight the characteristics and importance of information literacy in media education. The information literacy and library literacy were key factors in forming the concept and curriculum of MIL. UNESCO also presented 'information literacy and library skills' as essential areas of the MIL curriculum, as well as core competencies and achievement criteria. In addition, the MIL curriculum actively embraces information literacy and library literacy, with the five laws of MIL based on the five laws of library science. The results of this study could be used as a basis for the reason why MIL should be actively accepted in Library and Information Science and for the revision of Library and Information Life curriculum.

  • Although the importance of research methodoogy in library and information science(LIS) has been widely recognized, LIS has been also criticized that current research methodology in the field maintains only the positivistic orientation. Researchers on the other hand, assert that US should be studied as a human study, a subjective approach based on a phenomenological perspective, since US has very much to do. with the 'human factor,' with subjectivity in the form of librarian, patron, and administrator. In this paper, a review of the published qualitative research in the field which try to generate theories from the subjects in their own everyday life situation, attempts to shed light on the implication of a new terrain of everyday life research to US. Theory of everyday life is generated by the subjects who are involved in the social relationship, using their own language. It is a theory which shows the logic of the real world in which the everyday man recognize, act and communicate. This includes the perceptions, feelings, and meanings members experience as well as the 'small world' they create in process. Everyday life research performed using qualitative research methods which have strength to investigate this micro-structure applied to the field of library and information science, may bring enrichment to the library and information science research.

  • Melvil Dewey has been evaluated as a person of library movement, a man of thought, and a pioneer. However, the life-long achievements as a teacher has not been considered in the domain of library science. The foundations of Dewey's thought of public library can be divided into two categories: school education and home education. Based on these two types of education, Dewey established the major role of public libraries in supporting the life-long education of the public. Regardless of the great achievement of Dewey in education, few research has been conducted. The purpose of this research is to consider the role of libraries from the perspective of life-long education based on the thought of Dewey.

  • Teachers must design instruction to meet effective teaching and learning before teaching implementation. The traditional models of instructional design such as Dick and Carey, ADDIE and ASSURE have been widely applied. However, the traditional models of instructional design have limitation in that students fail in deep understanding of subject content because of break down essential goal of the unit small pieces of contents. To solve this problem, Wiggins and McTighe have suggested backward design. Backward design is a method of designing instruction by setting evaluation before choosing activities or content to teach. Therefore, this study explores the effective teaching and learning by analyzing structure of backward design and appling backward design to 'Library and Information Life' subject for information literacy education. Backward design for 'Library and Information Life' subject applies the template which Wiggins and McTighe devised for instructional design.

  • This study compared the everyday-life information behaviors of urban and rural adolescents to suggest ways that school library information services can better meet the information needs of each of these groups. It focused its comparison not only on the everyday-life information-seeking behaviors but also on kinds of information grounds and barriers forming information grounds. Two qualitative methods, written activity logs and semi-structured in-depth interviews, were used to examine everyday-life information behaviors of adolescents. It is expected that the proposed strategies will be used in planning actual school library information services for urban or rural youths.

  • This study presents the findings from research on the Everyday Life Information Seeking (ELIS) behaviors of Korean government officials in their 50s. 500 survey respondents participated and the quantitative data were analyzed through Structural Equation Model having six key concepts such as personal information environment, information-seeking attitudes, online information attitudes, barriers to information seeking, retirement expectations, and library expectations. The findings showed the important relationships between expectations of the retirement and two constructs (personal information environment and information-seeking attitudes). This study can be used as a strategic implication for library practitioners to develop their library management process in accordance to the potential and powerful evolving user group in a future aged society.

  • With the advent of uniquitous life, changes of users' demands make a public library accomplish roles and functions of a complex service center providing information, education and culture service. As a multi-function center, a public library provides various services based on physical and digital space in ubiquitous environment. Information commons is a basement of physical space in an u-Library. Especially, with the advent of ubiquitous environment, design and use of physical space will be a critical issue for a public library to perform its role and function as a multiple complicated space. This study derives facilities and components for designing and implementing information commons in a public library as a physical space. To perform the goals, this study focuses on the newest trends and requirements through literature study, case study and survey. As a result, this study proposes components of facility and principles of design to implement information commons as a physical space in a public library.

  • This study designed the research model to identify whether the characteristics of cultural programs of public libraries and middle-aged people's experience of the programs impact on their life satisfaction. To verify our model, we conducted our survey to random middle-aged users of five public libraries in Gyeonggi-do and nine public libraries in Seoul, and 246 valid samples are used. Our analysis showed that the characteristics of cultural programs and middle aged people's experience of the programs affect their perception of cultural programs, and the regional perception of public libraries had a significant effect on fulfilling personal needs for life satisfaction. Our analysis also showed the change in values of public libraries that spread to the realm of daily life. This study is meaningful in suggesting directions for national and local public library policies and public library cultural programs.

  • It is widely known that the public library in Korea has not been developed as a social agency which makes communication process possible. The public library in Korea just plays a role of the public study room for students using their own books. There is almost no public libraries in the sense of an open collection of comprehensive materials designed for use by anyone who seeks information. This study starts from this situation. It aims at identifying the present stage of the development of public libraries in Korea through investigating librarians' consciousness in their everyday lives. For this, a case study method is used for investingating, collecting and organizing the 'discourse' of librarians in Pusan and Kyongsangnamdo area. Major suggestions include : First of all, it is most important for public library reformation to eradicate the 'conservatism' in the consciousness of librarians in their everyday lives. So, it is essential to collect their life stories in various library conditions, and make them public discourse of librarians. Secondly, the professional organization should play a role to unify the librarians. For this role, it should maintain a R&D department and strengthen PR programs. Thirdly, Researchers who study Library and Information Science in Korea should be always concerned with the real-life context in the field. The most important type of research in our third world situation is the one that is based on the present stage of the development of our own libraries and the real library situation in the field.
