The study employed correlation design. Thirteen public universities were purposely selected while total enumeration was adopted to study 248 library personnel made up of librarians and library officers in public university libraries in South-west, Nigeria. Data was collected by questionnaire. The study established significant positive correlation between age, job status, ICT skills and task performance. Also, Anova test found significant joint influence of age, job status, ICT skills and ICT use on task performances of respondents. The study further indicated that age, job status, ICT skills possessed by respondents and ICT use had relative significant influence on task performances of respondents. It is therefore recommended that, library personnel must leverage their demographics positively to bring about positive disposition to their jobs while all categories of staff must ensure they possessed the requisite ICT skills that will ginger ICT use for effective task performance.

  • This study examined the perceptions of freshmen students on the use of a university library site. The students were in the beginning month of their undergraduate program in Hansung University without being taught a formal library instruction session. The results show users experienced uncertainty, difficultly, confusion and anxiety while they were interacting with various functions of the library site. The findings revealed that the users' perceptions were originated from: (1) the insufficiency of the students' knowledge and skills related to library use and (2) the inadequacy of the library system features, in particular its interface features. Based on the findings, implications to improve library instructional services and system interfaces are suggested.

  • The library is the most frequently utilized building on campus, but, it has been reported to be a facility most vulnerable to crime. However, almost no study has been conducted on crime in the library, which implies a need for research on the subject. The purpose of this study is specifically twofold. First, this study will suggest components of environmental plan to prevent fear over library crime on campus. Second, the study seeks to reveal the correlation between use per library space and fear of crime. This has been analyzed by conducting a survey among current university students, and the survey includes the following three details: first, fear over day/night crime per library space; second, components of environmental plan to prevent fear over crime per library space; third, level of use per library space on campus. The results of study show that fear of crime has low relation with crime occurrence, fear per library space is higher during the night than during the day, and the space where the fear level is usually high is the service facility. There is a difference for each space in terms of important components of environmental plan to prevent crime per library space, and installation of security device is most important. One must consider a plan for a crime safe environment regarding library space where the level of use during the day is low.

  • Libraries should offer their services to all users including those who find difficult to access knowledge information without any obstacles or discrimination. Therefore, this study, aiming at providing library services to all users by applying 'Universal Design' to libraries, extracted and presented five components in library services: universal convenience, which allows all users to use libraries; safety of services, which offers safety in library use; user-orientedness, which offers user-oriented library services; user request, which allows library services reflecting the needs of users; and economic feasibility of the services, which provide efficient and economic library services. The proposed five components will play the foundational role in implementing universal design on libraries so that all users can use library services.

  • This study investigates the factors affecting behavioral intention of professors and students at universities to use academic libraries in a hybrid library environment where a traditional physical library is combined with a digital library that is centered on online information use. The structural relationships among factors were also analyzed in this study by utilizing a combined behavioural model which was based on TPB and TAM. This study identified users' intention to use academic libraries according to changes in the use environment, and the findings of this study bring a valuable meaning to library administrators for setting up the strategic plan for the future of academic libraries. The results of this study imply that academic libraries should strategically setup an effective and efficient operating plan based on awareness, attention and cooperation, in order to survive as well as to accomplish balanced growth in rapidly changing environment.

  • This study investigated the information environment of lecturers in Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara State, Nigeria, in relation to their information seeking behavior, extent of use of the polytechnic library, perceptions of the resources and services of the library, level of awareness and extent of use of the open access model of scholarly communications, as well as the challenges of accessing and using information resources. It adopted the survey research method, using a questionnaire for data collection, while the descriptive statistics method was used to analyse the data, using tabular presentation and simple percentages. From a population of 280 lecturers for the study, a purposive sample of 164 was drawn. The findings showed that the lecturers' information needs are focused on online use; they hardly use the polytechnic library due to their perceptions of the resources and services of the library. They are, to a greater extent, aware of open access initiatives, but do not publish in open access outlets, while various challenges affect their access and use of information resources for teaching and research. A recommendation was made, among others, that the polytechnic management should pay more critical attention to the library especially in the areas of adequate, current and comprehensive collections on all the programmes of the institution, as well as the provision of wireless internet services on the campus through a public-private partnership arrangement.

Utilizing data (N=1,386) from the National Youth Policy Institute (2006), the study performed multiple regression analyses to test the association of library use of adolescents with the levels of civic competencies for democratic citizenship. Teenagers' library use had a positive significant association with cognitive civic competencies while showing a negative significant association with behavioral dimension of civic competencies. Based on the findings, the author discusses policy implications for developing library service for youth.

The findings show that majority of LIPs possessed a high level of awareness in the use of social media tools. The study also revealed that social network tools were highly used by LIPs in the academic libraries studied and the types of social media used by LIPs was also revealed. The major challenges faced in the use of social media include inadequate power supply, lack of Internet access and time constraints. The paper recommended that to enhance the use of social media by LIPs, there is need for constant awareness of the importance of social media tools to LIPs and libraries in effective service delivery, LIPs should be ready to learn, unlearn and be learned in the use of social media and university libraries should provide enabling environment such as internet connectivity, power supply and policy to guide LIPs in social media usage.
