From Skills to Practice: How Does Information Literacy Happen?

  • The use of a practice perspective in the analysis of information literacy represents a shift in attention towards the enactment of information literacy as a social practice, and away from the information skills approach that has dominated information literacy research and education. The sociocultural perspective that underpins a practice-oriented approach highlights the role of practice and co-participation of the community in shaping the production, reproduction and circulation of knowledge, including knowledge about the appropriateness of information skills in relation to the context in which the skills are practised. This emerging view contrasts with the conventional approach to information literacy that has focused on the information skills of individuals as something that can be learned and transferred independently of context. This paper explores two questions: what is information literacy and, how does it happen? It then goes on to identify the implications of this approach for librarians and researchers.

A Study on the System of Library Science - a problem of the view-point of library - (도서관학의 체계화에 관한 연구-도서관 "관" 의 문제)

  • The view point of the library is treated as a first subject. This study is scheduled to construct, as a experimental study, the system of the Library Science. The study of this fields is called upon greatly because the trial to understand library as a socio-cultural phenomenon did not study as many times. As a result of the study, library is defined as ${\ulcorner}Structural Formation of Inquirying Behavior{\lrcorner}$. Not only technique and actual proof are possible in this study but also this definition is technical definition to indicate the main phenomenon of Librarial Behavior. This schedule represent the trial to define Library Behavior which could anticipate and fabricate when we analyze this definition First, we can find out, first of all, the researching behavior among the human behaviors and then human behavior has the condition of practice. At last, researching behavior can not have any result when it is a natural situation, it has only the meaning when it is guided by an obvious intention. The object of the library is just this human behavior. Second, Formation permits the guidance and self-control at the same-times. The answer about what we find out and practice make it possible the act of guidance. This guidance can't burden any subject but permit the people to result his own researching behaviors. He can save his activities, his own researching behaviors by the result of it. Third, The statematical means efficient performances, and them efficient performances is impossible, here is 'discoveries' of behavior itself. The system of the library is the formation of the relation between the accumulated civilizations and accumulated civilizations. As the definitions of the above mentions, library has the big abilities to the creation and succession of the civilization. As the contemporary view-points, there are some questions about the above described definition can meet it of the library. When we frame the science of library as the learning systems, we can't but the library as this definitions.

  • The practice and management of cultural programs of public libraries have drown social attention as the importance of the public library has been emphasized in the process of social development. In this context, this study looks into the theoretical background of the importance on the public library's cultural programs, examines the practice of cultural programs of public libraries in Seoul from various perspectives through web-pages, and investigates the managerial aspects of them through survey of 20 public libraries in Seoul. By so doing, this study aims at enhancing our understanding on the cultural programs of public libraries.

Perceived Knowledge of Evidence-Based Practice among University Librarians (대학도서관 사서가 인식한 근거기반실무 지식의 영향 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the levels and factors influencing perceived knowledge of evidence-based practice(K-EBP) among university librarians. The results were as follows. Variables with significant differences in K-EBP were age, education level, employed type, position, frequency of reading journal articles, and attendance of conference. Multiple regression analysis showed that the predicting factors influencing K-EBP were education level and frequency of reading journal articles. Also, It turned out to be weak in critically appraising and applying research evidence in practice, and in understanding research literature and conducting research among items of K-EBP. For developing university librarians' K-EBP, they need to improve overall research literacy. Library organization and library sectors need to support research activities of librarians. Finally, many different education programs are needed to develop librarians' research skill and to utilize for enlargement of evidence-based practice.

Analysis on the Characteristics of Construction Practice Information Using Text Mining: Focusing on Information Such as Construction Technology, Cases, and Cost Reduction (텍스트마이닝을 활용한 건설실무정보의 특성 분석 - 건설기술, 사례, 원가절감 등 정보를 중심으로 -)

  • This study aims to improve the information service so that construction engineers and construction project participants without specialized knowledge can easily understand the important words and the interrelationships between them in construction practice. To this end, using text mining and network centrality, the frequency of occurrence of words, topic modeling, and network centrality in construction practice information such as technical information, case information, and cost reduction, which are most used in the Construction Technology Digital Library, were analyzed. Through this analysis, design, construction, project management, specifications, standards, and maintenance related to road construction such as roads, pavements, bridges, and tunnels were identified as important in construction practice. In addition, correlations were analyzed for words with high importance by measuring Degree Centrality and Eigenvector Centrality. The result was that more useful information could be provided if the technical information was expanded. Finally, we presented the limitations of the study results and additional studies according to the limitations.

  • Needs of our society for information professional have been changed continuously. The purpose of this paper is to study a direction of Library and information Science(LIS) education which can response properly the change. For this purpose, 1) the characteristics of information socitey, the demand to information profession, and the qualification required by the emerging job market of information professionals are examined. 2) the identity of LIS and its educational achievement for information professionals are considered. 3) Information Resources Management (IRM) which in some sense shares the common goal of effective information transfer with LIS is also considered. 4) the similarities and the differences between the two are discussed to seek their interrelationship and cooperation possibiity. While there are differences in focus and practice between LIS and IRM, interdisciplinary partnership between these two can enhance theory and practice of each other's area. Particulary, LIS school can take advantage for their students to penetrate the emerging job market as well-rounded information professionals.

  • This study presents an empirical study of classification system design focused upon an image design team within an organizational setting. It aims to understand collaboration during design practice. Data was collected through on-site interviews, observations, and document and email reviews. This study uses social process model as a conceptual framework. The study revealed type of collaboration, factors influencing collaboration, influences of collaboration on design practice.

A Study on Library and Information School's Practical Training Program: Focused on a Case of S Public Library (문헌정보학 분야 공공도서관 실습교육에 관한 연구 - S공공도서관 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study aimed to analyze the issues on practical training programs at public libraries and propose alternative strategies for them. This study discusses the theoretical bases of providing practical training programs with the recent change in curriculums of library and information studies. It also explores the current status of both practical training program courses offered by the departments of library and information science in Korea, and the operation of programs managed by 42 public libraries. This study categorizes the programs into three types, including basic task type, participatory type, and proactive type, and examines the characteristics of each type. Furthermore, it researches a case of the cooperative public library practice program, which S public library and C University jointly conduct, and analyzes students and librarians' needs who participated in the program. As a result, the study identifies all the parties' challenges and provide a gradual development strategies for the program.

Strategies for Improving Communities of Practice in Korea by Cooperating with Residents Autonomy (주민자치와의 협력을 통한 한국형 공공도서관 실행공동체 활성화 방안 연구)

  • The study is to find the possibility of cooperation between civil servants as a mediators for changing a society in a region into community of practice. "Community" is the value-oriented concept and exists in a local community, a community of practice and a organization that have the characteristic of "Community." Public libraries as "Community" have both characteristics of local community and community of practice. And public libraries as community gives public services for neighborhood region problem-solving to people. But in Korea, Residents autonomy system in Dong gives the service to people. They all conducts the business for changing a society in a region to community of Practice. Therefore the study conducted a survey about sense of community and necessity of cooperation in the business. The results are following: The group of higher awareness on community feels less needs to corporate the work in community than the group of lower awareness on community; The group of higher awareness on community or the group having more experience on community have lower job satisfaction. Therefore the motivation on working for community is needed for the mediator.
