  • As affective barriers to library and information use, library anxiety(Mellon, 1986) has been studied in reference/information services and bibliographic instructions. The paper revisits Mellon's theory of library anxiety and Bostick's(1992) Library Anxiety Scale(LAS) in the digital library environment. In particular, this study attempts to address the inadequacy of the continued applications of LAS in the digital library environment, although the scale has been used unquestionably as the instrument measuring library anxiety. This contention was substantiated by three service trends in digital libraries(i.e., digital reference services, remote access, and transition from bibliographic instructions to information literacy) and by re-analyses of published library anxiety research papers in recent years. This study addresses the need for scale development that could measure anxieties of digital library users. It also suggests Information Literacy Anxiety Scale(ILAS) as a direction for the new scale.

  • Library anxiety has been recognized as one of the representative fields that concerns user's affectivity in library and information study. Considerable library users have been discovered to experience library anxiety according to researches. Although digital libraries are becoming more popular changing drastically from traditional libraries, few studies have addressed the measurement of digital library anxiety(DLA). The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a multidimensional digital library anxiety scale(DLAS) based on previous research in library anxiety and digital libraries. It will become possible to define the construct of DLAS, provide its underlying dimensionalities, and find out how much they explain the construct. Through the exploratory factor analysis, DLAS has been developed with 39 items representing seven distinct factors which were interpreted as affect, resources, know-how, security, language, technology, and task explaining 51.165% of DLA. Also, DLAS' characteristics about demographic variables and use pattern were found through the T-test and ANOVA analysis for each factor.

  • The study investigated the concept and symptoms of library anxiety, the relationship among the library anxiety, the research anxiety, and the information literacy, and the decrease of library anxiety through the review on literatures on the library anxiety of which the concept was first presented in 1986. The studies on the library anxiety till now had been focusing on the under graduate students and graduate students in America, so the study suggests the necessity of the study on the library anxiety and the development of library anxiety scale for the students' efficient use of the library in Korea.

  • This study examines the relationship between library anxiety and computer attitude with references to the variations in the college students' gender, grade level, academic majors, frequency of library visits, and the perception towards mobile-phones in order to explore the possible measures for minimizing library anxiety amongst the students. The study results show the computer anxiety and the computer usefulness to be the computer attitudinal factors most closely correlated with the level of library anxiety. Our proposed solution is the development of a user training course and curriculum to lower students' computer anxiety while promoting greater computer usefulness.

  • This study has examined the cause of the library anxiety among foreign students upon visiting college libraries. 131 students were investigated using Library Anxiety Scale (LAS) to analyze the relationship between sex, grade, library use education, frequency of library use, Korean skill and cultural heterogeneity. The result of the LAS showed an average of 2.60 among foreign students, and the anxiety from the "mechanical barrier" was scored the highest. For sex, male students tended to be relatively more anxious than female students on the "accommodation of library" and "knowledge of library." Students who participated in the library use education were less anxious than those who did not, and the more one used library, the less one became anxious. Based on these results, the study proposes the way ahead for resolving library anxiety through library use education and frequency of use.

  • This study measures library anxiety using K-LAS for senior users, who constitute the smallest part of a public library users group. According to the findings, the overall score of library anxiety was 2.95, which was higher than the score of university students and local residents measured in previous studies. It was analyzed that the anxiety score of 'Digital Information' factor was the highest. In addition, it was found that the anxiety score was high in the old age group and the low education level group. Senior users whose intention of visit was to attend a community class and frequency of visit was lower showed higher library anxiety. This study suggests a method to reduce library anxiety of senior users, based on the analysis findings.

  • To investigate the present states and analyze the library anxiety among academic library users, A University library users sampled systematically and surveyed. Data collected from 707 students are analyzed and compared with the previous studies. The average LAS score is 2.55 and show differences in sex, grade levels, and major areas of study. Library use instruction reduces anxiety subscale of barriers with staff. Library anxiety is also differed according to the frequency of library visit. Especially, the anxiety subscale of affective barriers is decreased according to the grade level and frequency of library visit. Based on the results, recommendations are suggested to overcome the library anxiety.

  • This study aimed to analyze library anxiety among international users in various aspects and make suggestions for alleviating library anxiety. Subjects were 'international users using the academic library' not only including international students but also including international professors and researchers to analyze library anxiety in various aspects. S university with most international users was selected for the study, and the surveys were distributed. The questionnaires completed by 369 international users were analyzed. The overall average of library anxiety among international users is 2.96, and 'knowledge of the library' appears to be the greatest source of library anxiety among international users. An analysis revealed that variables including status, nationality, library instruction, the reason for using the library, Korean proficiency, and cultural understanding contributed significantly to the library anxiety level. Based on these findings, recommendations for library service, staffing, environment, and resources were made to help alleviate library anxiety.
