A Study of the Curriculum Application and Improvement based on National Competence Standards(NCS) at Department of Library and Information Science (문헌정보학 전공에서의 국가직무능력표준(NCS)을 활용한 교육과정 적용 및 개선에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a curriculum based on the National Competency Standards(NCS) to raise the higher professional staffs that can adapt to environmental changes due to globalization and local industry demands and to improve the quality of learning and to accept policy of the Ministry of Education. We conducted with the measurement of Educational performance by pre/post, 3 dignosis test. As a result, There were improvements in Educational Performance. Based upon Educational performance and analysis, several new directions for NCS education in the filed of LIS curriculum are suggested. We hope from this study that an application of NCS would be activated fully in Library, educational institutes and qualifying examination institutes and that diverse feedbacks from related parties would make a lead to a better updated version of NCS development in library.

  • Recently, countries have recognized the significant to instruct the information literacy to library users so that they can positively and actively use the information. However, among the courses of library and information science in the colleges of South Korea which educate the potential librarians, few courses have the objectives to make the students obtain the abilities to teach the information literacy in the future. Since this lack of appropriate educations is reflected on the fields of library, the librarians have many difficulties in preparing for and performing user instructions. As an alternative solution for this problem, this study suggests opening a course, information user instructions, in the curriculum of library and information science of the colleges in South Korea and concretely demonstrated the curricular model. Also the course syllabus displays when this course would open.

  • This study compare and analyzes recent school library standards in advanced countries including Britain, United States and Japan. The examination is based on the changing process of standards and development of school library in the each countries. To Suggest the model of reasonable standard for the activation of school library in Korea, the study has identified the common elements ; staff, material, environments, management and cooperative system, and learning skill with curriculum of school library standards showed in the each of advanced countries.

  • Recently, the Ministry of Education is striving to move education and school libraries toward the information age and to create an atmosphere open education. School libraries need to be furnished with lots of useful materials for the curriculum of open education. School libraries need to be furnished with lots of useful materials for the curriculum of open education. Therefore, school libraries should adopt the concepts and techniques of marketing. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Nonprofit organizations such as school libraries should adopt the concepts and techniques of marketing to solve the problems for the rational management of the system. 2. Marketing techniques can be adopted in the areas such as collection development, service fee, selection of the place of library, advertising, better library user organization etc. 3. School libraries should be total educational information centers to realize educational goal and the curricular. 4. Procedures for marketing strategies for school libraries are embodied in mission statement, environmental analysis, marketing audit, marketing mix, marketing segmentation, evaluation methods etc. 5. The 4 "Ps", product, price, place, promotion make up the marketing mix for school libraries.libraries.

A Comparative Study on the Perception of the Job Seeking College Degree Candidates and the Librarians Concerning Library Specialized Services

  • This research has investigated the perceptions of subject specialization services and the opinions of students majoring in library and information science preparing for librarianship, librarians operating in the field, and library directors on the status and ways of nurturing subject specialization for librarians, among others. To this end, based on the results of previous research and the survey questionnaire analysis, we have presented a policy to train subject librarians. First, we have proposed a plan for systematizing the current educational system within the department of library and information science. We have also suggested ways to secure subject expertise based on curriculum management, minor programs, multi-major programs, and interdisciplinary major programs based on the standard curriculum model. Second, we have presented a subject specialization educational system for field librarians, and further suggested details for the development of an educational program that can help build subject expertise and the operation of educational methods as well as the personnel in charge of implementing the educational programs. Third, we have proposed institutionalization of the qualifications of the subject librarian where the qualification requirements have been organized considering academic background, major program, library career, and career experience in the subject specialization service, further suggesting the implementation and maintenance of the system.

Worries and Solution to Japanese Librarians' Professionalism (일본의 도서관인의 전문성에 대한 고민과 그 해답)

  • In recent years, the worries of professionalism of the professions have been long lasting and the debate of securing the expertise by improving the curriculum and qualification system as well. In this study, we have focused on cases where Japanese' securing the expertise of profession through practicing specific and systematic movement by reorganizing the curriculum and implicating an expertise evaluation system. First, we analyzed the relevant qualifications for librarians and education system of Japan. Second, we organize the requirements of the Library and the studies of Library and Information Science (LIS) in Japan to secure expertise. Third, based on the requirements of the site and the results, we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages by focusing on recent changes in the curriculums and expertise evaluation system.

Evaluation of the Economies of Public Libraries in Metropolitan Cities (대도시 공공도서관의 경제성 평가)

  • This study is to evaluate the economies of scale of the public libraries in metropolitan cities. The results of the regression analysis confirm that for all samples of libraries there is diseconomies of scale in library operations (${\Sigma}b_{n}$≒6.14∼10.91). Therefore, all the types of public libraries should be improve productivity by user-based collection development, increasing circulation turnover rate, activation of in-library use, strengthening mobile library services, rational planning of services area, development of reading programs connected with the curriculum, a new branch library plans, etc.

Developmental of Curriculum for Training Professional Librarians Specializing in the Field of Mental Health (주제전문사서로서의 정신보건사서 양성 교육과정 개발)

  • There is a strong need to develop a training program for specialized personnel called mental health librarian. The study examines the necessity of ongoing education as series of steps to be considered in actual curriculum development, by looking at the features of bibliotherapy through a literature review and through an analysis to the requirements of a qualified mental health librarian and its training system. The result shows that, in order to train librarian in mental health, it is necessary to establish courses corresponding to the bibliotherapy field within the subject of library and information sciences and to strengthen the specialization in the its curriculum. It is desirable to establish the mental health librarian educational programs in library and information science graduate programs in Korea. The results of this study, as fundamental data for future research, will promote the role of the specialized mental health librarian and guidelines for developing and expanding the qualities and training of specialized librarian to resolve the immediate problem of the Korean library scene and academia.

  • In the era of knowledge and information society, specialists with a specific concentration are more appreciated than broad knowledge. Therefore, it is a growing trend that universities and departments restructure their vision and plans to foster specialized professionals. While responding to the needs of working libraries and adhering to the basic educational goals, the Programs of the library and information science sector should be flexible to the external changes. In this sense, each university should develop customized curriculum based on its related policies, resources, and surrounding circumstances, with an emphasis on specialization over standardization. This paper discusses how to build specialized education programs in line with specific environments that each university is surrounded with, and by doing so, raise information professionals with specialized concentrations.

  • This preliminary study examined the status of data science-related course syllabi in the American Library Association (ALA) accredited Library and Information Science (LIS) programs. The purpose of this study was to explore LIS course syllabi related to data science, such as course title, course description, learning outcomes, and weekly topics. LIS programs offer various topics in data science such as the introduction to data science, data mining, database, data analysis, data visualization, data curation and management, machine learning, metadata, and computer programming. This study contributes to helping instructors develop or revise course materials to improve course competencies related to data science in the ALA-accredited LIS programs.
