  • This study was conducted as part of an effort to vitalize policy information services (POINT) of National Library of Korea, Sejong. The authors examined information behavior and policy information service use behavior of policy information users and checked if there are any differences in information behavior by participants' occupations (public officials, researchers, and librarians). We carried out an online survey and collected 331 completed survey responses. Overall, the most frequently used type of material was research report, followed by journal article and monograph, etc. The participants frequently used search engines and policy information services to acquire policy information. Also, 47.7% of the participants were aware of and had usage experience of POINT. Furthermore, we found statistically significant differences in some aspects of policy information behavior and in perceptions toward POINT across participants' occupations. These findings suggest that National Library of Korea, Sejong needs to improve their services based on a better understanding on target users.

  • Such future-oriented institutions that put together the functions of a library, archive, and museum are being actively introduced overseas recently and are called LAM, GLAM, and media tech. In South Korea, the term larchiveum, combining library, archive, and museum, is widely used. Therefore, this study explores a case study followed to determine larchiveums in service both home and abroad. The researcher then conducted an interview with librarians, archivists, and curators working for the larchiveums selected as the South Korean cases for the study to understand the meaning of a larchiveum. Additional interviews were conducted with five users that visited a larchiveum in the nation and uploaded posts on a social media platform to understand their perceptions of a larchiveum and problems with the purpose, functions, and services of it. Based on the analysis results, the study proposes vitalization plans for the management of a larchiveum in three aspects: improving the internal and external awareness, securing budgets and manpower for space enhancement and service, and reinforcing the integrated management of a larchiveum via a devoted organization.

  • This study aims to propose desirable operational strategies for public library programs as a means to alleviate the daily difficulties faced by married immigrant women. To achieve this, We conducted an analysis of 326 multicultural programs from 132 institutions, all of which were supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2022. The purpose was to gain an understanding of the current situation and identify any issues related to these programs. Additionally, we conducted interviews with married immigrant women to gain insights into the challenges they encounter in Korean society and to determine their specific demands regarding library programs. Furthermore, we interviewed librarians responsible for multicultural services to better comprehend their experiences in managing such programs and to understand their perceptions of multicultural services for married immigrant women. Based on these findings, we have proposed four operational strategies for public library programs targeting married immigrant women. These strategies include: 1) Program content, 2) Program operation method, 3) Building a personal network and utilizing human resources, 4) Collaboration with other institutions.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of school library services using the RGT (repertory grid technique), and to examine whether there are differences in the perceptions and internal experiences of school library services between human resources (librarian teachers, subject teachers, and librarians). I used indicators such as element intensity, construct extremity, discrepant constructs, and implicative dilemmas to analyze the characteristics of school library services. The elements of the repertory grid were set to 9, and 14 constructs were set through focus group interviews with 3 librarian-teachers. The GRIDCOR 6.0, which can be accessed online, was used to complete the repertory grid for 30 graduate students of the College of Education, and 6 of them were selected and analyzed, considering the demographic characteristics. From the perspective of element intensity, it was found that the following school library services are important and influential: resource management, teacher-librarian collaboration, and reading and information counseling services. The clarity of one's role, the actual performance, and self-regulatory ability were ranked high from the perspective of constructs intensity.

  • This study examines the teachers' perception of the school library's role and the teacher-librarian expertise that enables collaborative reading education in elementary schools. Furthermore, it develops strategies that the school library and teacher-librarians should undertake for collaborative reading education. The questionnaire was developed to survey 176 teachers in 9 elementary schools in Gyeonggi-do. As a result, the teacher's perception of the school library's role and event role perception would positively impact the expected effects of collaborative reading education intention. This study is meaningful in that suggestions are offered for collaborative reading education and where teacher-librarian expertise is placed.

  • During the last decade, increasing use of technology that facilitates information access has changed academic library services. The emergence of information commons is one of the key changes. Most previous studies on information commons have focused on its conception and role. Whereas, considering information commons as a spatial service, this study aims to examine the influence of information commons on user traffic patterns within the library and perception of the library. As the information commons grew into main library service space and facility, it is necessary to explore what influences information commons have on the behavior and recognition of users. Two methods were used. First, observation method was used to record traffic pattern and user behavior. Second, twenty undergraduates and twelve graduates were interviewed regarding the use and recognition of the information commons and the library. The results of the study show that the traffic patterns were different between undergraduate students and graduate students; the location and structure of facilities influences their movement and behaviors; and the recognition of information commons tends to affect the perception of the entire library. The findings may help librarians improve and plan for library spaces to meet user demands.

  • This study is to suggest the direction of the spatial change of the university library based on the trend of the spatial change in the university libraries and a survey on the perception of the librarians. For this purpose, the characteristics of the spatial change of the university libraries from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed, and the problems of the spatial change of the university libraries were identified through a survey. As a result of the survey, there was a total of 99 spatial changes in the university libraries nationwide over the past 20 years, including new construction, extension and remodeling. In recent years, it was found that due to the university's budget tightening policy, the university libraries focus on remodeling rather than new construction or extension. The characteristics of the spatial change were analyzed as follows. First, the resting areas have been expanded in the libraries. Second, The libraries are in pursuit of pleasant and comfortable atmosphere. Third, the libraries aim to establish an innovative and creative space. All these changes have been made in order to accommodate the requests of users and increase the number of users. It was also found that spatial change has advantages in these two points: providing various spaces and increasing the number of library visitors. On the other hand, spatial change has the problems such as the increased cost of maintaining the facility and the lack of management manpower. Additionally, a few more problems of spatial change are pointed out: first, spatial change only reflects the trend of the times without making a big change in the services and the actual value of the university library. Second, it has made university libraries standardized losing each library's own characteristics. This study suggests that the spatial change of the university library should secure the distinctiveness of the university library, accommodate various changes, and aim for the symbolism that can prove the value and existence of the university library.
