A Study on the Reform Plan of Librarian Education Program for Librarianship in Korea (국내 사서교육프로그램 인식도 분석 및 개편방안 연구)

  • The goal of this study is to propose the reform plans for education program for librarianship. For this goal, authors analyzed the current status(participation rates and availability, training and operating methods, lectures and lecturers, facilities and location, future core competencies, etc) of education program using the librairan's survey and forecasted the long-term educational demand. Based on these results, authors proposed a future-oriented reform of education program for librarianship for establishment and operation of tentatively named 'National Librarian Education Institute' in the National Library of Korea.

Local Autonomy and Training of public Librarians (지방자치와 사서직 공무원 연수)

  • A public librarian is an occupation, which requires long-term. continuous training and difficult study to acquire and cultivate professional knowledge and skills. It is a necessity to achieve new knowledge, information and skills via appropriate retraining. A training system is the method which gives chances of retraining to public librarians. After examining some of the problems with the existing training system, it is apparent that the direction of training system needs to be decentralized. That is each local branch should be autonomous in terms of new training for librarians. For the method of training system, each autonomous unit would integrate the different theories to apply to the community-at-large and invite practical specialists from the local community to lecture. The training classes would be elective in that the each librarian could choose the classes he/she wants to take and give them credits for that, but the certificate for the class would also go towards completion for the required technical training. Finally, the utilization of cyber-education should be introduced, and the library association's role strengthened, to help public librarians cultivate their specialties.

An Analysis on the Perception of Public Librarians about Lifelong Education Tasks: Focus on Incheon Metropolitan City (공공도서관 사서의 평생교육업무에 대한 인식 연구 - 인천지역을 중심으로 -)

  • This study analyzes on the perception of public librarians about lifelong education tasks in public library using Mann Whitney U-test, Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient, Multiple regression analysis. At the same time, analysis about re-education needs using Analytic Hierarchy Process is conducted. As result, at first, 87% of respondents feel moderate or difficult about lifelong education tasks, especially on planning task. At second, librarians who have qualification about lifelong educator feel easier (P=0.04) than others, in detail, task about lecturer liaison (P=0.04) and planning (P=0.05). Adding that, the career experience and the job difficulty of librarians has negative relationship (R=-0.217). Especially scheduling (R=-0.33) and progressing (R=-0.22) tasks show statistically meaningful. At third, as the result of Multiple regression analysis, tasks about planning (P=0.04) and library marketing (P=0.05) are selected as meaningful elements which effect overall difficulty of life long education job. As final, 91% of librarian need retraining for life long education function, as result of spearman (R=-0.210), the more librarians feels difficult about life long education jobs, the more they need retraining. Anyway, as the result of priority of retraining subjects through AHP technique, user communication (CU P=0.310), planning (PL P=0.246), library marketing (LM P=0.173) are in weight order. CR ratio shows 0.146 with permissible degree.

A Study on the Acquisition of Subject Specialized Manpower and Institutionalization (주제전문인력 확보 및 제도화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, an investigation has been made on the status of the issuance of librarian qualification, the status of operating Subject specialized librarians at home and abroad, the status of professional manpower of the similar cultural facilities, and their recruitment method, based on which an attempt has been made to propose a way to nurture the Subject specialized librarians. First, I propose a method for training Subject specialized librarians through a regular curriculum and a retraining process, while suggest the ways to nurture the Subject specialized librarians from undergraduate and also nurture the existing librarians to become the Subject specialized librarians. Second, the basic qualification of the Subject specialized librarians must have a career of more than 3 years in a specific subject area with a master's degree or higher, and in order to have a subject area background, it is proposed that a bachelor's degree or a master's degree must absolutely be acquired in the corresponding subject area. Third, in order to improve the treatment of such Subject specialized librarians, the Subject specialized librarians in the administrative service group could be organized into a research librarian (or library and information science) series and types as a subordinate literary series under the researcher position. That is, it is proposed to differentiate the librarians and the Subject specialized librarians by reorganizing series and types of the Subject specialized librarians while maintaining the current librarian series.

A Q-study on Librarians' Role Orientations (도서관 사서의 역할지향(Role Orientation)에 관한 Q 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the role orientation that librarians are expected to carry during their career-life. More specifically, this study examined the pattern of librarians subjectivism related to attitude, belief, and confidence. Q questions were made of 36 items, including personal value system and role attitude. P sample included 23 librarians. Data were collected for 8 days (from April 15, 2005 to April 22, 2005). Analyses showed the following results. First, librarians role orientations were classified into 3 types: user-centered orientation, organization-centered orientation, and expertise-centered orientation. (1) The first type librarians were interested in having good relationships with users, while emphasizing the importance of providing good services to the users. (2) The second type of librarians were concerned with social function of the library, while placing highlight on their roles as organizational members. Among them, achievement evaluation was regarded as an important indicator of personal success. They were interested in having stable organizational culture, as well as economic growth of libraries. This orientation was dominant among married members. (3) The third type of librarians focused on librarians role implementation and professional achievement. They showed interest not only in the improvement of librarians creativity and the growth of expertises, but also the expansion of retraining opportunities. This orientation was conspicuous among female librarians. Second, several commonalities and differences were consistently found among librarians. The first type was interested in user-centered orientation(user contact, need satisfaction, self dignity, etc.). The second type was interested in organization-centered orientation(creativity, expertise growth, retraining opportunity, professional achievement. self-respect, etc.).

A Study on Analysis of Importance-Performance on Teacher Librarians' Competencies (사서교사 직무 역량에 대한 중요도·만족도 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze priorities of competencies and to find the direction of development of teacher librarian training and retraining program. A total of 238 subjects were used for the final analysis. They were analayzed using IPA, Borich's needs analysis and the Locus for Focus model. As a result, First, teacher librarians perceived that the importance and performance of teacher and manager competency were higher than information specialist and cooperative leader. Second, they needed competencies of data-science, coding, Internet of Things in the field of information specialist as changing educational environment. Third, they needed competencies of information ethics, copyright instruction, and digital and media literacy education in the field of teacher. Fourth, they needed competencies of facility designing for future education, online and offline school library marketing skills, and establishment of makerspaces and learning commons in the field of ibrary manager. Fifth, they needed competencies of library based instruction, library cooperative instruction, and building a collection related to subject in the field of cooperative leader. Sixth, the highest required competency for teacher librarians was suggested for teacher librarians' role area.

An Analysis of the Public Librarians' Self Images using Semantic Differential Method (의미 변별법을 활용한 공공도서관 사서의 자아상 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to measure self images of public librarians who should increasingly take charge of services for children and young people through the semantic differential method and analyze its' general characteristics. According to the results of analysis public librarians have been satisfied with their works and believed that they are kind, fair and gentle. One the other hand, they have had negative self images such as no influence, neglect, poor and stuffiness. Therefore, the result show that public librarians consider their ability, quality and activity as positive images, but they have felt lack of the social consensus and affirmative evaluation of their role. So, we can see building a good physical environment and running great programs to create access of children and young people to the public libraries, demonstrating leadership among senior librarians are so important in order to beat the stereotype and improve their positive self images of their evaluation and role. It is also necessary to promote the new value and role of public libraries and librarianship and to enable retraining for cultivating their qualities as a teacher.

Medical Librarians' Contribution to SR Searching (의학도서관 사서의 SR 지원에 관한 연구)

  • This study searched for the status of medical Systematic Review(SR) publications in Korea and elsewhere for last 10 years, closely analyzing SR research papers by co-authors of Korean librarians. Through interviews with Korean librarians participating in SR, the activities, roles, and difficulties of these librarians were identified, and the results of the interviews helped explore new ways to promote collaboration in SR research. The result of the studied showed that the number of domestic and foreign SR studies has recently increased, and the number of cases where Korean librarians participated in SR research being officially credited as a co-author or acknowledgment source was also grow. The SR librarians in the Korean medical libraries were not only search experts, data collectors, and reference writers, but also did various activities such as designing search strategies, SR search records with complete reproducibility, and DB search tutorship. To promote SR support librarians participated in the interview suggested recruiting new librarians, retraining current librarians, and reformation courses in library and information science. As it is expected that the level of information demand of users and expectations for librarians would also increase in near future, SR librarians' activities and contributions seem to offer a guideline for academic library services that the others should pursue.

A Study on the Learning Community Activities of Librarians in Outsourced Public Libraries: Focusing on Gangnam-gu, Seoul (위탁 공공도서관 사서의 학습공동체 활동에 관한 연구 - 서울시 강남구를 중심으로 -)

  • Librarians facing the new information environment need to actively cope with knowledge and skills, but librarians in outsourced public libraries are burdened with participation in external education due to concerns about work gaps or inadequate institutional support, making it difficult to continue their education. Therefore, in this study, in order to create an environment in which librarians can grow together, the current status of the activities of the learning community was checked and the effects were identified. An online survey was conducted from May 20 to 22, 2023, targeting librarians who had participated in learning community activities among librarians belonging to the Gangnam-gu Library, and 101 copies were distributed to collect 81 copies and use them as analysis data. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that librarians are satisfied with the activities of the learning community and have a high level of understanding and empathy for their necessity. Therefore, as a way to revitalize the learning community, we propose to form a culture that promotes collaboration among members, share visions and values for learning community activities, and provide institutional support.
