Metal sulfides are good candidates for cathode materials. Especially, iron sulfides and nickel sulfides have been demonstrated to be potential electrode materials among metal sulfides due to nontoxicity and high theoretical specific capacities. Electrochemical properties (capacity, cycle life, stability etc.) of Li/iron sulfides or nickel sulfides cell were improved by methode such as coating, doping of material, and nanoization of materials etc.
Here, we report on nanocrystalline Si-Al-M (M = Fe, Cu, Ni, Zr) alloys for use as an anode for lithium-ion batteries, which were fabricated via a melt-spinning method. Based on the XRD and TEM analyses, it was found that the Si-Al-M alloys consist of nanocrystalline Si grains surrounded by an amorphous matrix phase. Among the Si-Al-M alloys with different metal composition, Ni-incorporated Si-Al-M alloy electrode retained the high discharge capacity of 2492 mAh/g and exhibited improved cyclability. The superior $Li^+$ storage performance of Si-Al-M alloy with Ni component is mainly responsible for the incorporated Ni, which induces the formation of ductile and conductive inactive matrix with crystalline Al phase, in addition to the grain size reduction of active Si phase.
$LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ cathode material was synthesized by a mixed hydroxide methode. The surface of the $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ was coated with a carbon by using a sol-gel method to improve further its electrochemical properties. Electrochemical studies were performed by assembling 2032 coin cells with lithium metal as an anode. OSC (differential scanning calorimetry) data showed that exothermic reactions of charged to 4.3V vs. Li was suppressed in the carbon-coated materials. The carbon-coated $LiNi_{1/3}Mn_{1/3}Co_{1/3}O_2$ showed the improved rate capability and thermal stability.

Metal sulfide powders such as MnS, $MoS_2$ and FeS are simply used to the machinery processing improvement agent and solid lubricant in powder metallurgy industrial. And then, metal sulfide powders have received relatively little attention from powder metallurgy. Recently, the portable machine is one of the important interfaces between human or human and electronic machine. With the increase of the intelligent activity, the social and industrial demands for information display device and power source are increasing. The transition metal sulfide materials (FeS, ZnS) have received considerable attention due to the large variety of its electric, optical and magnetic properties. Among the metal sulfide, $FeS_2$ is appealing superior material for applications in $Li-2^{nd}$ battery because of high capacity. ZnS is also a famous phosphor material with various luminescence properties, such as photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL). So generally used in the fields of display, sensors and laser. Metal sulfide materials, therefore, are provided for most widely application in all industries. In recent years, material researchers have become increasingly interested in studying with synthesis of metal sulfide.
Lithium rechargeable batteries have been widely used as key power sources for portable devices for the last couple of decades. Their high energy density and power have allowed the proliferation of ever more complex portable devices such as cellular phones, laptops and PDA's. For larger scale applications, such as batteries in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) or power tools, higher standards of the battery, especially in term of the rate (power) capability and energy density, are required. In PHEV, the materials in the rechargeable battery must be able to charge and discharge (power capability) with sufficient speed to take advantage of regenerative braking and give the desirable power to accelerate the car. The driving mileage of the electric car is simply a function of the energy density of the batteries. Since the successful launch of recent Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride)-based HEVs (Hybrid Electric Vehicles) in the market, there has been intense demand for the high power-capable Li battery with higher energy density and reduced cost to make HEV vehicles more efficient and reduce emissions. However, current Li rechargeable battery technology has to improve significantly to meet the requirements for HEV applications not to mention PHEV. In an effort to design and develop an advanced electrode material with high power and energy for Li rechargeable batteries, we approached to this in two different length scales - Atomic and Nano engineering of materials. In the atomic design of electrode materials, we have combined theoretical investigation using ab initio calculations with experimental realization. Based on fundamental understanding on Li diffusion, polaronic conduction, operating potential, electronic structure and atomic bonding nature of electrode materials by theoretical calculations, we could identify and define the problems of existing electrode materials, suggest possible strategy and experimentally improve the electrochemical property. This approach often leads to a design of completely new compounds with new crystal structures. In this seminar, I will talk about two examples of electrode material study under this approach; $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{0.5}O_2$ based layered materials and olivine based multi-component systems. In the other scale of approach; nano engineering; the morphology of electrode materials are controlled in nano scales to explore new electrochemical properties arising from the limited length scales and nano scale electrode architecture. Power, energy and cycle stability are demonstrated to be sensitively affected by electrode architecture in nano scales. This part of story will be only given summarized in the talk.
The composites such as Sn-CNTs, $SnSb_{0.5}$-CNTs and $CoSb_3$-CNTs have attracted much attention in the past years owing to their good overall properties. In these samples, intermetallic compounds show high specific capacities. Recently, interest in metal oxides such as $Al_{2}O_{3}$, MgO and $TiO_2$ has been largely stimulated by the realization that they can improve the cycling stability of the Li-ion battery electrodes. The reversible capacity of the $TiO_2$/CNTs composite reaches 168 mAh $g^{-1}$ at the first cycle and remains almost constant during long-term cycling. In this study, a nanocomposite of $TiO_2$/CNTs was prepared by sol-gel method and its electrochemical properties as anode materials for Li-ion batteries were studied by galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammograms (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).
This work aims to study and analyze the various operating modes of universal power converter which is powered by solar and thermoelectric generators. The proposed converter is operated in a DC-DC (buck or boost mode) and DC-AC (single phase) inverter with high efficiency. DC power sources, such as solar photovoltaic (SPV) panels, thermoelectric generators (TEGs), and Li-ion battery, are selected as input to the proposed converter according to the nominal output voltage available/generated by these sources. The mode of selection and output power regulation are achieved via control of the metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) switches in the converter through the modified stepped perturb and observe (MSPO) algorithm. The MSPO duty cycle control algorithm effectively converts the unregulated DC power from the SPV/TEG into regulated DC for storing energy in a Li-ion battery or directly driving a DC load. In this work, the proposed power sources and converter are mathematically modelled using the Scilab-Xcos Simulink tool. The hardware prototype is designed for 200 W rating with a dsPIC30F4011 digital controller. The various output parameters, such as voltage ripple, current ripple, switching losses, and converter efficiency, are analyzed, and the proposed converter with a control circuit operates the converter closely at 97% efficiency.
The amorphous vanadium oxide thin films for thin-film rechargeable lithium batteries were fabricated by r.f. reactive sputtering at room temperature. As the experimental parameter, oxygen partial pressure was varied during sputtering. At high oxygen partial pressures(>30%), the as-deposited films, constant current charge/discharge characteristics were carried out in 1M $LiPF_6$, EC:DMC+1:1 liquid electrolyte using lithium metal as anode. The specific capacity of amorphous $V_2O_5$ after 200cycles of operation at room temperature was higher compared to crystalline $V_2O_5$. The amorphous vanadium oxide thin film and crystalline film showed about 60$\mu$Ah/$\textrm{cm}^2\mu\textrm{m}$ and about 38$\mu$Ah/$\textrm{cm}^2\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. These results suggest that the battery capacity of the thin film vanadium oxide cathode strongly depends on the crystallinity.
Layered $LiNi_{0.83}Co_{0.11}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ cathode materials single- and dual-doped by the rare-earth elements Ce and Nd are successfully fabricated by using a coprecipitation-assisted solid-phase method. For comparison purposes, non-doping pristine $LiNi_{0.83}Co_{0.11}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ cathode material is also prepared using the same method. The crystal structure, morphology, and electrochemical performances are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) mapping, and electrochemical techniques. The XRD data demonstrates that all prepared samples maintain a typical ${\alpha}-NaFeO_2$-layered structure with the R-3m space group, and that the doped samples with Ce and/or Nd have lower cation mixing than that of pristine samples without doping. The results of SEM and EDS show that doped elements are uniformly distributed in all samples. The electrochemical performances of all doped samples are better than those of pristine samples without doping. In addition, the Ce/Nd dual-doped cathode material shows the best cycling performance and the least capacity loss. At a 10 C-rate, the electrodes of Ce/Nd dual-doped cathode material exhibit good capacity retention of 72.7, 58.5, and 45.2% after 100, 200, and 300 cycles, respectively, compared to those of pristine samples without doping (24.4, 11.1, and 8.0%).
