As the demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles is increasing, it is important to recover valuable metals from waste lithium-ion batteries. In this study, the effects of gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure on hydrogen reduction of NCM-based lithium-ion battery cathode materials were investigated. As the gas flow rate and hydrogen partial pressure increased, the weight loss rate increased significantly from the beginning of the reaction due to the reduction of NiO and CoO by hydrogen. At 700 ℃ and hydrogen partial pressure above 0.5 atm, Ni and Li2O were produced by hydrogen reduction. From the reduction product and Li recovery rate, the hydrogen reduction of NCM-based cathode materials was significantly affected by hydrogen partial pressure. The Li compounds recovered from the solution after water leaching of the reduction products were LiOH, LiOH·H2O, and Li2CO3, with about 0.02 wt% Al as an impurity.
Due to key roles for the electrochemical stability and charge capacity the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) has been extensively studied in anodes of a Li-ion battery cell. There is, however, few of investigation for cathodes. Using first-principles based calculations we describe atomic-level process of the SEI layer formation at the interface of a carbonate electrolyte and $LiMn_2O_4$ spinel cathode. Furthermore, using beyond the conventional density functional theory (DFT+U) calculations we examine the work function of the cathode and frontier orbitals of the electrolyte. Based on the results we propose that proton transfer at the interface is an essential mechanism initiating the SEI layer formation in the $LiMn_2O_4$. Our results can guide a design concept for stable and high capacity Li-ion battery cell through screening an optimum electrolyte fine-tuned energy band alignment for a given cathode.
Battery heat management is essential for high power and high energy battery system because it affects its performance, longevity, and safety. In this paper, we investigated the temperature of the 18650 Lithium Ion Battery Module used in a Energy Storage System (ESS) and the cooling method to minimize cell-to-cell temperature variation of battery module. For uniform temperature distribution within a battery module, the flow direction of the coolant in a battery module has been changed according to the time interval, and studied the effect of the cooling method on the temperature uniformity in a battery module which includes a number of battery cells. The experimental results show that bi-directional battery cooling method can effectively reduce the cell-to-cell temperature variation compared with the one-directional battery cooling. Furthermore, it is also found that bi-directional battery cooling can reduce the maximum temperature in a battery module.

This paper investigates a new approach for Li-Ion battery state-of-charge (SOC) estimation using sliding mode observer (SMO) technique including parameters aging compensation via recursive least squares (RLS). The main advantages of this approach would be low computational load, easiness of implementation along with the robustness of the method for internal battery model parameters estimation. The proposed algorithm was first tested on a set of acquired battery data using implementation in Simulink and later developed as C-code module for firmware application.
Reusing electric vehicle batteries after they have been retired from mobile applications is considered a feasible solution to reduce the demand for new material and electric vehicle costs. However, the evaluation of the value and the performance of second-life batteries remain a problem that should be solved for the successful application of such batteries. The present work aims to estimate the remaining useful life of Li-ion batteries through the neuro-fuzzy system with the equivalent circuit parameters obtained by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). To obtain the impedance spectra of the Li-ion battery over the life, a 18650 cylindrical cell has been aged by 1035 charge/discharge cycles. Moreover, the capacity and the parameters of the equivalent circuit of a Li-ion battery have been recorded. Then, the data are used to establish a neuro-fuzzy system to estimate the remaining useful life of the battery. The experimental results show that the developed algorithm can estimate the remaining capacity of the battery with an RMSE error of 0.841%.
$^7Li$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra have been observed for $LiMPO_4$ (M = Fe, Mn) samples, as a promising cathode material of lithium ion battery. Observed $^7Li$ shifts of $LiFe_{1-x}Mn_xPO_4$ (x = 0, 0.6, 0.8, and 1) synthesized with solid-state reaction are compared with calculated $^7Li$ shift ranges based on the supertranferred hyperfine interaction of Li-O-M. Ex situ $^7Li$ NMR study of $LiFe_{0.4}Mn_{0.6}PO_4$ in different cut-off voltage for the first charge process is also performed to understand the relationship between $^7Li$ chemical shift and oxidation state of metals affected by delithiation process. The increment of oxidation state for metals makes to downfield shift of $^7Li$ by influencing the supertranferred hyperfine interaction.

This study examines the effects of a carbon coating on the electrochemical performances of $LiFePO_4$. The results show that the capacity of bare $LiFePO_4$ decreased sharply, whereas the $LiFePO_4$/C shows a well maintained initial capacity. The Li ion diffusivity of the bare and carbon coated $LiFePO_4$ is calculated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) to determine the correlation between the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ and Li diffusion. The diffusion constants for $LiFePO_4$ and $LiFePO_4$/C measured from CV are $6.56{\times}10^{-16}$ and $2.48{\times}10^{-15}\;cm^2\;s^{-1}$, respectively, indicating considerable increases in diffusivity after modifications. The Li ion diffusivity (DLi) values as a function of the lithium content in the cathode are estimated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The effects of the carbon coating as well as the mechanisms for the improved electrochemical performances after modification are discussed based on the diffusivity data.
