  • The incorporation of room temperature ionic liquids (IL) in poly (ethyleneoxide)-lithium salt (PEO-LiX) based solid polymer electrolytes is presently being studied as an effective means of enhancing the room temperature ionic conductivity of these electrolytes to acceptable levels for use in lithium batteries. In the present study, $PEO_{20}-LiTFSI$ solid polymer electrolyte was blended with three different ionic liquids, namely 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BMIMTFSI), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetraflouroborate (BMIMBF4) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluromethanesulfonate ($BMIMCF_{3}SO_{3}$). The incorporation of all these ILs resulted in the enhancement of ionic conductivity, the effect being more pronounced at lower temperatures. Electrochemical properties of the blended electrolytes were studied by cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry and interfacial resistance measurements. The optimum results were obtained with the blending of BMIMTFSI in the solid polymer electrolyte.

  • This study investigates the electrochemical characteristics of the hybrid cell that combined the advantageous characteristics of Li secondary battery and supercapacitor, high energy density and high power density, respectively. Electrochemical behaviors of the hybrid cell was characterized by charge/discharge, cycle and impedance tests. The hybrid cell using Li secondary battery and supercapacitor had better discharge capacity and cycle performance than that of using Li secondary battery only. Proper design of such a hybrid cell system is expected to result in substantial benefits to the well being of the Li secondary battery. The hybrid cell involving Li secondary battery for high energy density and supercapacitor for high power density may be the possible solution for future energy storage system.

  • Energy storage/conversion has become crucial not only to meet the present energy demand but also more importantly to sustain the modern society. Particularly, electrical energy storage is critical not only to support electronic, vehicular and load-levelling applications but also to efficiently commercialize renewable energy resources such as solar and wind. While Li-ion batteries are being intensely researched for electric vehicle applications, there is a pressing need to seek for new battery chemistries aimed at stationary storage systems. In this aspect, Zn-ion batteries offer a viable option to be utilized for high energy and power density applications since every intercalated Zn-ion yields a concurrent charge transfer of two electrons and thereby high theoretical capacities can be realized. Furthermore, the simplicity of fabrication under open-air conditions combined with the abundant and less toxic zinc element makes aqueous Zn-ion batteries one of the most economical, safe and green energy storage technologies with prospective use for stationary grid storage applications. Also, Zn-ion batteries are very safe for next-generation technologies based on flexible, roll-up, wearable implantable devices the portable electronics market. Following this advantages, a wide range of approaches and materials, namely, cathodes, anodes and electrolytes have been investigated for Zn-ion batteries applications to date. Herein, we review the progresses and major advancements related to aqueous. Zn-ion batteries, facilitating energy storage/conversion via $Zn^{2+}$ (de)intercalation mechanism.

  • This paper presents optimal operational scheduling model and economic assessment of Li-ion battery energy storage systems installed in non-residential customers. The operation schedule of a BESS is determined to minimize electric bill, which is composed of demand and energy charges. Dynamic programming is introduced to solve the nonlinear optimization problem. Based on the optimal operation schedule result, the economics of a BESS are evaluated in the investor and the social perspective respectively. Calculated benefits in the investor or customer perspective are the savings of demand charge, energy charge, and related taxes. The social benefits include fuel cost savings of generating units, construction deferral effects of the generation capacity and T&D infra, and incremental CO2 emission cost impacts, etc. Case studies are applied to an large industrial customer that shows similarly repeated load patterns according to days of the week.

  • Batteries are critical components of electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The connection of a battery to the power grid for charge and discharge greatly affects energy storage. Therefore, an accurate and easy-to-observe battery model should be established to achieve systematic design, simulation, and SOC (state of charge) estimations. In this review, several equivalent circuit models of representative significance are explained, and their respective advantages and disadvantages are compared to determine and outline their reasonable applications to Li-ion batteries. Numerous commonly used model parameter identification principles are summarized as well, and basic model verification methods are briefly introduced for the convenient use of such models.

  • There are many application fields of electrical energy storage such as load shifting, integration with renewables, frequency or voltage supports, and so on. Especially, the frequency regulation is needed to stabilize the electric power system, and there have to be more than 1 GW as power reserve in Korea. Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials have been investigated as a cathode material for Li-ion batteries because of their higher discharge capacity and lower cost than lithium cobalt oxide. Nonetheless, most of them have been investigated using small coin cells, and therefore, there is a limit to understand the deterioration mode of Ni-rich layered oxides in commercial high energy Li-ion batteries. In this paper, the pouch-type 20 Ah-scale Li-ion full cells are fabricated using Ni-rich layered oxides as a cathode and graphite as an anode. Above all, two test conditions for the application of frequency regulation were established in order to examine the performances of cells. Then, the electrochemical performances of two types of Ni-rich layered oxides are compared, and the long-term performance and degradation mode of the cell using cathode material with high nickel contents among them were investigated in the frequency regulation conditions.

  • Natural graphite is obtained from an abandoned open-cast mine and purified by a simple, eco-friendly and affordable beneficiation process including ball milling and flotation process. Both raw graphite (55 wt %) and its concentrate (85 wt %) were electrochemically tested in order to evaluate these materials as anode materials for Li-ion and Na-ion batteries. It was found that both raw and purified graphites exhibit good electrochemical activities with respect to lithium and sodium ions through completely different reaction mechanisms. The encouraging results demonstrated in this work suggest that both raw and graphite concentrates after flotation could be used respectively for stationary and embedded applications. This strategy would help in developing local electrical storage systems with a significantly low environmental footprint.

  • The battery pack in this research consists of dozens of a small battery for energy storage. And this battery pack charges and discharges repeatedly at high capacity (25 ~ 50 V, 25 ~ 100 A). The high temperature which can be generated in this process has a bad effect to the lifetime and efficiency of batteries. Moreover these factors are related with maintenance cost. Therefore, we need to assess the thermal performance of the battery pack in advance using the experimental or numerical analysis. In this research, we analyzed voltage and surface temperature of one cell battery to calculate heat transfer using the numerical analysis. And the temperature of the battery surfaces and inside of the pack was also analyzed. As a result, we found out the appropriate pack structure which stacked five modules.
