  • Experimental verification of numerical results is conducted by measuring the dynamic strains of mid-points of the coupler and the lever for the 4-bar linkage mechanism with rigid bearing and flexible bearing, respectively. For the axial strain of lever mid-point, the numerical results including geometric stiffness almost agree with the experimental ones, however, the numerical results excluding geometric stiffness almost agree with the experimental ones for the axial strain of coupler mid-point. It is supposed that these phenomena should be caused by the fact that the motion of the coupler is more complicated than of the lever. The signals of dynamic strains of coupler and lever mid-points, measured by strain gages, are transformed into frequency domain by fast fourier transformer. From this experiment, the lst resonance frequencies of the coupler and the lever are obtained. It is made clear that the former almost agrees with the fundamental and the latter the 2nd mode natural frequency of the mechanism system calculated by numerical analysis.

  • Elasto-dynamic deformation of flexible linkage mechanism was analyzed using the finite element method. A computer program was constructed and applied to analyze a specific crank-level 4-bar mechanism, in which the elasto-dynamic deformation of the mechanism system was obtained using mode superposition method in the case of constant input speed and the effect of geometric stiffness on the mechanism is included. Experimental verification of numerical results was conducted by measuring the elasto-dynamic deformation of mid-points of coupler and lever for the 4-bar lingkage mechanism using high speed camera and image data processing systeem. For the elasto-dynamic deformation at the lever mid-point, the numerical results including geometric stiffness almost agree with the experimental ones. However, the numerical results excluding geometric stiffness good agree with the experimental ones at the couper mid-point.

  • A 6-DOF precision stage was developed based on parallel kinematics structure with flexure hinges to eliminate backlash, stick-slip and friction and to minimize parasitic motion coupled with motions in the other-axis directions. For the stage, lever linkage mechanism was devised to reduce the height of system for the enhancement of horizontal stiffness. Frequency response comparison between experimental results and mathematical model extracted from dynamics of the stage was performed to identify the system parameters such as spring constants and damping coefficients of actuation modules, which cannot be calculated accurately by analytic methods owing to their complicated structures. This newly developed precision stage and its identified model will be very useful for precision positioning and control because of its high accuracy and non-coupled movement.

  • It is very important to correctly set control surface linkage. But a lot of bad setting case has been seen in especially remote controled airplanes and middle size UAVs. In this paper, a three dimensional linkage from control surface to deflection sensor was analyzed kinematically and a position analysis was simulated using algebraic algorithm in terms of nonlinear error of deflection angle. Three correct settings of the linkage came out of this research. One is two-dimensional motion, another is link ratio of 1 and the other is that effective lever of the control surface should be perpendicular to a pushrod in their neutral position.

  • The steam generator, one of the major components in the reactor coolant system, plays an important role in transferring the thermal energy made in the reactor during normal operation to the secondary side and producing steam to drive turbine. A hydraulic snubber system is used in order to protect the steam generator under the dynamic loading condition and to absorb the thermal expansion transmitted by the reactor coolant piping due to high temperature and pressure during normal operation. In this study, the model for a geometrical linkage system is presented to analyze the snubber stroke of the steam generator and the parameters in the snubber stroke analysis are investigated. A method to analyze lever ratio of the linkage system which is required in the process of determining the snubber stiffness value is also presented. To discuss the validation of the suggested analysis, the analysis results are compared with the measured data during the hot functional test for the standardized 1000 Mwe pressurized water reactor plant under the construction.

  • The vibration isolation system is a system that attenuates the vibration transmitted from surroundings by using external energy supply like electricity and feedback and/or feedforward functions. Such a system needs stiff structure to make precise positioning without ripple within a certain bandwidth. So, a horizontal and rotary arrangement of the actuation module is suggested by using lever linkage. Modeling and kinematic formulation are completed and system identification is accomplished to tune the design variables accurately. The vibration isolation control is performed by mu-synthesis with the uncertainties in design variables. Low frequency signal enhancement circuit and saturation proof integration algorithm are devised to use seismic sensors for displacement control. This overall system shows good disturbance rejection performance.

  • The modeling of an active vibration isolation system is accomplished by using the equivalent spring constant, mass and rotational Inertia of each component. The detailed model of the actuation module is successful for describing its frequency-domain performance but also too complicated to implement it to actual system for control so that the order of the model is reduced up to the degree that preserves its characteristic in the low frequency range. The reduced model is suitable for identifying the unknown system parameters such as damping constants of components. The overall isolation system is described by using the reduced model of the actuation module. The accurate model ing and system parameter identification that is essential for the control of the active vibration isolation system is attained successfully.

  • Analysis of elasto-dynamic deformation of flexible linkage mechanism is conducted using the finite element method. The equations of motion of the system are derived from the static structural problem in which dynamic inertia, gravitational and driving forces are treated as external loads. Linear spring model is included in the formulation of equation of motions to represent the effects of deformation of elastic bearings of revolute joints on the system behavior. A computer program is constructed and applied to analyze a specific crank-lever 4-bar mechanism. The algorithm of the program is as follows. First, the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the system are calculated by solving the eigenproblem of the mechanism system which can be considered as a static structure by assuming the input shaft (crank shaft) to be fixed at any given configuration of mechanism. And finally, the elasto-dynamic deformation of the whole system is obtained using mode superposition method for the case of constant input speed. The effect of geometric stiffness on the mechamism is included in the program with the axial forces of links obtained through the quasi-static displacement analysis. It is found that the geometric stiffness exerts an important effect upon the elasto-dynamic behavior of the flexible linkage mechanism. Elastic deformation of bearing lowers the natural frequencies of the system, resulting smaller elastic displacement at the mid-point of the links and bigger elestic displacement at the ends of the links than rigid bearing. The above investigation of flexible linkage mechanism shows that the effects of the elastic deformation of bearing on the mechanism should be considered to design the mechanism which satisfies more preciously the purpose and the condition of design.

  • Automotive turbochargers have become common in gasoline engines as well as diesel engines. They are excellent devices to effectively increase fuel efficiency and power of the engines, but they unfortunately cause several noise problems. The noises are classified into mechanical noises induced from movement of a rotating shaft and aerodynamic noises by air flow in turbochargers. In addition to, there is a mechanical noise caused from movement of an actuator, electronically controlling a wastegate valve. It is called as valve rattle noise. The actuator is connected to a valve through a linkage. The noise occurs only if the valve is open, where the linkage is freely contact to neighbor structures without being constrained by any external forces. This condition allows impacts by the pulsation of exhaust gas, and the vibration from the impacts spreads out through turbine housing, causing the rattle noise. The noise is not in mechanical operating wastegate turbochargers because the linkage of an actuator is strongly connected by actuating force. For the electronic wastegate turbocharger, this paper proposed a test device to show the noise generating mechanism with a small vibration motor having an unbalanced shaft. It also shows how to reduce the noise - reduction of linkage clearances, inserting wave washers into a connection, and applying loose fitting in bushing embracing a valve lever to turbine housing.
